Hi everyone,

Happy New Year! 🎊 May the coming year be brimming with boundless creativity and abundant moments for painting bliss.

This is Part 1 of the Black Cockatoo tutorial.

Here is Part 2 of the Black Cockatoo tutorial https://www.patreon.com/posts/95683622

In this tutorial you will mix two colours to make black.

You'll paint a simple background splash of colour behind part of the Cockatoo and you'll wash all the feathers in at once.

Once the initial wash is dry, you'll add some feather detail over the top. You will use both the wet on wet technique and the wet on dry technique throughout the painting.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here.

The reference photo I used for this painting is my own.

I hope you enjoy painting it.

I'm going to give this one a go, as we need something black and blue in the living room after Christmas decor came down yesterday (okay, okay, they didn't all come DOWN-down, I'm still working on it, too busy painting the black cockatoo...), but I just had to say I LOVE this one, being a parrot lover, and also a Supracolor lover, too -- it may NOT be absolutely necessary, but I also cannot help myself sometimes!

Carol Crawford Barfield

I'm looking forward to painting this. Would you tell us what kind of tree he is sitting in? I love those leaves. It looks different than anything I've seen in the USA.

Louise De Masi

Hi Carol, I hope you enjoy painting it. It's a Banksia - for the reference photo (an Australian native). The Cockatoo is sitting in a pine tree (conifer) in the footage that I've included in the video.

Jackie

Hi Louise, Can you help? I can't get the ultramarine and transparent sienna to separate and granulate so that you can pick out the blue and sienna on the paper. What am I doing wrong?

Louise De Masi

Hi Jackie, It's something I don't do deliberately- it just happens on the wet paper. Make sure your paper is wet enough and you don't need to mix the colours really well on the palette. A quick swoosh together with your brush to make grey is all that's needed. Try having your board on a slight angle as well- that might help.

Chris

After the first wash on the head, do you rewet the paper before applying the second layer?

Louise De Masi

Hi Chris- if you are asking about the darker pigment that I apply at 13:53 I didn't re-wet it because the paper is still wet from the first wash. If it was starting to dry I would have waited until it dried completely and then I would have re-wet it with water. I'll always mention if I have re- wet the paper or I will demonstrate it.

Chris

Thanks Louise!

Lily O

Hi Louise, do you tap your brush on the towel after loading it with wet paint? In your older tutorials you did, but it doesn't appear the case in these newer tutorials. Thanks

Louise De Masi

Hi Lily, I don't always tap it- only if I think it's too wet. I'll give it a single tap on a towel before touching the painting. Sometimes I might use a paper towel or tissue and I'll touch it to the side of the bristles to try to release a bit of the water without removing too much paint.

Thanks for the tip on watering down the paint with the spray bottle to see what it looks like in a weaker mix. I’ve no idea why I’ve never thought of that. Much appreciated.😊
