Hi everyone,

I've divided this tutorial into two parts. This is Part 1.

Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/99680162

Meet Ochre. He lives 2 houses away from us and he often drops in for a visit.  I thought he would make a good subject for us to practice painting black fur.

In this tutorial we'll use a limited palette of three colours plus a little white gouache for the whiskers. We'll work wet on wet and wet on dry and we will adjust the consistency of the paint as we need to. I also apply some cool pan pastel highlights at the end - to create interest.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. I have included lots of progress photos of my painting to help you paint him. You can download them individually or all at once by clicking on the "Download all" button.

Ohh well I will have to do this one!

Hotflash Vickie

How timely! My son has two dogs, a YELLOW lab mix, and a BLACK retriever mix, but I bet if I use my imagination and mess up a bit, I can make this look like ONE of them, don't you think? LOL.

Sammie Bryant

Wow, gorgeous painting, I love labs

Ariane

YES! So excited for this one. Really beautiful painting 😍

Louise De Masi

For sure Vickie! I have absolute confidence in you. ☺️💛

Stephanie House

I have been wanting to do a dog, I love your step by step approach . It helps me understand how to go about doing my own canine. I enjoy your teaching style (and bloopers) very much!

Basia

Great Painting Louise, I am so looking forward to having a go....hopefully it will go well on the wall alongside my Viszla !

Pam Banaszak

I am so excited that you chose a black lab. I own 2, Jazmine and Finley. I have been following you for several years. I can't wait to paint Ochre, although my female resembles him very closely, I may pretend it is really her.

Kelly Hackett

Louise, so wonderful as usual. Where do you purchase those single dishes you used in this video?

Albena de Koning

Love it, Louise ! But I want to schare my problem too. How come I cant open a tutorial from the index any more ?

Louise De Masi

Hi Albena, Dom here. I'm not sure but if you are able to post here it means that you are logged in correctly. I'll send you a message.

Angela Carroll

Thank you for the Archive.zip file, too! The tutorial is masterful, as always!

Louise De Masi

Thank you Stephanie. You can apply the techniques here to most short haired dogs.

Louise De Masi

I love the names of your dogs Pam. Have fun painting them. 💕

Mersina Achele

Thank you for a lovely tutorial Louise, it was a joy to paint. I'm going to try to use the skills to paint my dog.

Janice Meyer

Thank you! I saw this tutorial, and it made my day. :) Louise, Can't wait to apply this technique to a Pet portrait I have waiting.

Kate

Dear Louise, I am having difficulties with downloading any of the provided resources on my phone. All other tutorials work like a charm. I tried the archive.zip as well as the individual files. Any idea what it could be? Thanks!

Louise De Masi

Hi Kate, Dom here. The files are the same here as all the other tutorials so I can't say. Have you tried logging out and back in?

Kate

Hello Dom, I have tried that. I resorted to downloading everything on the PC now. I seem to be the only one with an issue, so I think everything on your end is alright. Thanks for the reply!

Took me April to finally make time for the tutorial. As I watched the first glance, I have managed to get myself distracted to looking at cute dog pics on pixabay 😂

I completed this painting yesterday, and in spite of a couple discouraging oopses along the way, it turned out to be my favourite painting so far. It's the first one that I've wanted to frame and hang up in my house. It looks just like a black lab we once owned. Your tutorials have helped me in several ways. I'm learning to slow down, to patiently layer, to see colour values and shading, to use an eradicator brush, and to eventually leave things alone. All in all, painting with you has been a joy. Thank you so much for your excellent tutorials!

Louise De Masi

That's fantastic Gail! I'm so pleased you had success - this is not an easy painting so well done. ❤️

Oh la la. Scary and then... so beautiful. I love this place

I'm having the hardest time trying to create that black color I get a lot of shades of green I'm using Rosa gallery paints and some Windsor Newton cottman. do you have any suggestions.

Louise De Masi

Hi Christine, it sounds like the issue might stem from a combination of the pigments and the quality of the paints you're using. Here's how you can troubleshoot and get closer to that black:  Look at the pigment codes for the colours you're using. If the Rosa Gallery or Cotman versions have different pigments or include multiple pigments, they might behave differently when mixed. The codes of the paints I used are on the supplies list. Adjust the proportions of Ultramarine and Sienna. Too much of either can lead to green or muddy tones. Start with equal parts and then tweak from there. If you're getting green tones, it suggests the yellow undertones in one of the colours are dominating. Add a touch more Ultramarine to neutralise it  If the current mix isn't working, you could try substituting another warm reddish-brown. That might give you a more reliable neutral mix. I’m not familiar with Rosa Gallery paints and they may not perform as well as Schmincke or other high-end brands. Cotman is student-grade and might not have the pigment intensity you need for deep, rich blacks.

Rob Jones

Hello Louise, can i substitute another colour for Quinacridone Gold? I was thinking Raw or Burnt Sienna or Burnt Umber. I've read that a lot of brands no longer make it. Thank you.

Louise De Masi

Hi Rob - if you want a similar colour try mixing Transparent Yellow (PY150) with an earth colour like Burnt Sienna.

Rob Jones

Thankyou , I’ll give it a try. Cheers.
