Hello everyone.

I wanted to make this announcement for a couple of reasons. The main one is that I followed you guys' advice from a month ago, and set up some things to use google docs to share the advance chapters. Patreon's text editor is seemingly fixed now, but I am utterly sick and tired of having to grapple with it every time there's an update, and there's no telling when it'll break down again.

Thus, I would like to do a poll, to see if you guys would be fine with the chapters being hosted on google docs so I do not have to constantly wrangle patreon's mad and all too often utterly non functional text editor. I will also do a test, with the next few chapter posts (like chapter 274) will both have the google doc link and the full chapter. I know some of you prefer to read the chapters via their email, hence this will let you see how it works on your end and vote accordinly. Don't hesitate to leave a comment if you have an alternate suggestions as well.

The second reason is that I am considering opening a Ko-Fi page, partially as an insurance policy, and have begun laying the groundwork. Patreon has, several times thus far, capriciously blocked access to my funds because of their periodic crackdowns on NSFW content and such. A Ko-Fi page would allow me to have a backup should something go south and Patreon go insane again, or hell, if it just become flat out nonfunctional through their incompetence, which given their last few updates cannot be discounted anymore. I wouldn't close the patreon page, nor would there be any difference between the benefits given, it would be there as a backup, and I guess would be an alternative for those of you who wish more of your money to go to me instead of being drained in platform fees, since patreon pockets a substantial portion of my earnings, for what can only be described as subpar service at best.

Thank you for your time, and stay tuned for chapter 274 in three hours !

I don't know ko-fi. So as long as one can pay with paypal, there is no problem for me

ElAdri1999

Tbh Patreon sucks for creators but is very convenient for readers, Google docs is pretty bad for me bc old phone, that said if you set up Kofi I will try it's interface

Zurulean

Now I don't know anything, but I have heard other creators say that Kofi is better than patreon and takes less of a cut.

Arg

Google docs is fine, just for the love of god don’t switch to word docs. Had an author that liked to do multiple small updates a week and was a pain.

jarthur93

patreon takes 8% per transaction while Ko-Fi takes a flat 4.50 a months ( or did last i heard), to be honest i haven’t tried ko-fi as a user or subscriber but that difference in amount the author gets at higher subscription counts is going to be absurd.

WindGunner

Can I have both, don't really care about formatting on patreon, so if you just copy paste it would be fine for me

ElAdri1999

Based on players stats on Patreon the difference is like 120$ ish, so quite significant if everyone changed platform

Jampodevral

Good. Ko-fi just seems to work better, for creators and supporters, and it has a smaller cut.

Deus Ex Minima

Fine with either, would switch to Ko-fi if that was the right way to go. Their stuff is pretty good.

Note: for those iPad and iPhone users, I recommend downloading the chapters as a pdf to apple’s iBooks app. I would personally say that, when it comes to iPad and iPhone, Patreon is better than google docs. However, the nice thing about google docs is that it can be read on most whatever platform you want so long as you’re not too lazy

Avdrdr

Just don’t keep adding to the same google doc. It gets super laggy at loading on mobile the longer the doc is

How would the chapters be accesses on kofi?

playwars

Google docs, unfortunately Ko-Fi's own text editor works, but italics and bold doesn't carry over, which causes issues.

playwars

I won't. Separate docs for each chapter.

playwars

No ? Google docs would be so I don't have to deal with Patreon's constantly breaking text editor. Having it on both defeats the entire purpose.

playwars

I only used word docs once, when I couldn't read the corrections my publisher had sent for the first novel on my PC, and it was...horrific. I'm not touching that thing again.

playwars

Yeah, I've had recommendations from readers and fellow authors alike for it as a replacement, what with Patreon's constant breakdowns and its intermittent crackdowns. It's not perfect, and it is missing some features, but at least it's not actively fighting me like patreon often does.

CaT'O'Matique

google docs can be good, i follow an author who use it to prevent copy/paste in case he want to publish the story later and has to take down chapters.

Rafnar Caldon

Google docs is not very tts friendly for the tts engine's I like to use so it adds extra steps for me For patreon and RR I can just use the Reader mode button

Matthew Murphy

I'm hesitant to change, but tbh patreon even on the reader side isn't very good.
