David Makes Man gives us puzzle pieces and expects us to put them together ... sometimes it is difficult to understand some of them. Seren is being abused by both of his parents. We found out in the first episode that Ray (stepdad) is sexually abusing him. When David slept over at Seren's in episode 3, we learned that his mom is responsible for the physical abuse (the bruises on Seren's body) because he tells David, "Sometimes, she goes too far ..." Seren's body language when she is about to enter the house (panic and fear), her saying to him that if David was not there, Seren would get "an attitude adjustment" are meant to show that Mrs. Kelley uses physical punishment against her son and apparently does not know a distinction between punishment and abuse. In this episode, it is clear that Seren is old enough and fed up enough that he is not just idly letting his mom lay hands on him anymore. Mrs. Kelley's bruise is from Seren reacting to her abuse -- he says he didn't mean to, and that's believable. He's just not able to withstand being used as a punching bag anymore.
