As a book reader, this season has been the most faithful to the book out of all of the seasons. But just trust the process of where its going. And for benedict, its not that he doesn't want to commit to sophie. asking her to be his mistress is his way of saying he wants to be with her. but in this world, he simply cannot marry a maid without ruining his entire family's reputation and damaging his sisters chances of marriage. high class people could not marry working class people so by asking her to be his mistress, he is saying that he wants to be with her and that is the way he can do it and provide for her. it still sucks by him for sure, but he is not trying to be horrible. but for her with her mother being a mistress and making her illegitimate, it is a big problem for her
