They probably just wanted to infect her mother with the spores. Although since they dont cause impregnation their purpose may be able to create sleeper agents and sleeper cells by infecting the hosts brain causing the third generation to act either indifferent to the infected host or are influenced by the spores to help hide and feed the impregnanted individuals. With the 3rd generation infected being permanent to influence the infected to act as future sleeper agents getting them into the right place at the right time to hide feed and shelter any current or future infected hosts.

It reminded me of the moment on page 365 of the previous chapter 6, where despite crying in the alley her babies try to cheer her up by making her see that she is not alone, it is very similar but with a different context, at the same time it made me wonder, will the same scene even happen again when we get to that point in the story? Or will it change? A new approach would be that she is telling and blaming herself but before even feeling guilty or having a breakdown, her babies interfere by giving her a growth spurt, indicating that she should not worry about it, the most important thing is to continue growing
