It could be possible that the way the alien biology is structured in a qay similar to that of a massive ant colony where there are all the regular individuals in the alien society that live normal lives but there are also alien queens that are similar to ant queens in the way that they give birth to the entire society and what is happening to christine is that the alien brood has mutated her internal structure into something that is similar to a queen alien in order to carry to term the massive brood inside her. As for why the aliens are doing this it could be that somehow all the queens went extinct or there's not enough of them left. The belches that we see the characters doing could be some form of defense mechanism the alien queens use to infect other aliens to make more queens and either due to the absence of queens or the inability to make more queens the aliens have lost their mean of reproduction and now use a special brood that turns humans into alien queens to carry the brood to term
