Beasts of Burden: Animal Rites is on a list of books and graphic novels banned in Missouri schools in the wake of a law regarding material deemed "harmful to minors". Books are being pulled for fear of crossing the vague and subjective line of what is deemed "harmful", a broad range covering LGBTQ+ issues, holocaust memoirs, classical art studies and even a graphic novel adaptation of the Bible. Authors on the list include Margaret Atwood, Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore and Alison Bechdel. The PEN literary organization released an explainer of the situation and opposition to the ban, which you can read here:

You can see the list of banned books here:

I've signed the authors list, and have reached out to other comics creators whose work is on the list (I was originally contacted by Derf Backderf, whose work is also on the list, who put me in touch with Jonathan Friedman at PEN, who is spearheading the response. You can follow the situation at Friedman's twitter: https://twitter.com/jonfreadom/status/1592934405550780417

And you can add your name to the authors by signing the public protest here:

Thanks.

Bonkers, I tell ya! What next? Geez! Consider my name added as well to thus extremely relevant petition!

Considering the authors on that list, I suppose it's a weird sort of honor to be included. But what a fucked-up mess. Censors always hide behind the shield of "Protect the Children!"

Rezolution

It's a badge of honor in my opinion, but fuck em none the less

You are in good company on that list. Beasts of Burden is great work and young people could only benefit from it.

Joe Rauch

Tells you what these dipshits are afraid of. Keep doing you Evan.

Russell Grant

Absolutely bananas. Not the preferred way to be lumped in with some esteemed company.

Ray Cornwall

What the fucking fuck all fuck are they thinking?

What a bizarre list of good books. I loaned out my hard cover copy of Animal Rites to a friend and gave away a soft cover copy to another friend. Also, Persepolis 1 and 2 are great. Solid autobiographies from a unique perspective and time.
