I was going through some old sketchbooks when I discovered something that I had forgotten about... Peter and Marmalade. This was an idea for a cosmic horror comedy series featuring a boy and his human faced dog. These designs led to Nigel and Marmalade.

Woah... The origins of Nigel and Marmalade are looking very creep. I like it. It suprising to see that this would path the way into the shorts series we knew and love today. Thank you for sharing the video (✯◡✯)

I believe Peter and his human faced dog deserve a cameo

The other advantage to having Nigel and Marmalade quite simple I imagine would be that it's easier to animate them accurately and quickly across different episodes and then the weird people they meet on the way can be more complicated because they appear less often, which is clever but also does allow the good contrast

I can only imagine what would happen should these two pairs ever meet in some sort of cosmic-horror induced peek at the other side. A lovely bit of Nigel and Marmalade history (:
