During his second battle while serving in the army, he nearly lose his life. Luckily, he was able to reduce the force of the arrow shooting at him with his palm. An eye was lost, but he lives on.

I suppose he is grateful to just be alive. That’s why he has that positive and cheery outlook. From the looks of it his hand prevented the arrow from going through to his brain.
