I ran into some massive performance lag once I enabled hair to hair collisions, but after messing around and regrowing the guides the issue went away. Can I assume, if an issue arises with hair, reroot and regrow as a first attempt to fix is the right approach? I tried a few things so I am not sure if that fixed it but it might have?

yea that might be due to the fact that hair intersect at the given moment u enable it. So reroot/regrow helps to get em to a better initial state and in general debugs things when you feel that hairs misbehave :)
