Hey there Thanos. I hate to bother you about this again but could you possibly give a little more insight on how you achieved the glass look? I'm trying to recreate the look you have and it's not looking great. Just wondering if it's only a simple spec material with roughness or did you add fake shadows or something? It seems like I'm missing something with the glass material and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Hey man this is an old one haha. As u see in the tut, its all about what glass refracts, what is behind it. Add roughness, make sure u got a lot of bounces and thats all. Are u using octane? if yes enable fake shadows, increase transmission to 1. Now, glasses are a pain in the ass.. not gonna lie :) needs careful positioning of objects lights around them.

keshaw singh

yeah that object behind trick is soo cool i am goona use it with almost all the shots where i feel it needed

Golden wisdom my friend. I have learnt so much from this tutorial. Thanks so much for sharing. 🙏🏻

Awesome thanks for sharing this. Just out of curiosity does the glass texture just have a really high roughness value with a low IOR?

Olivier Beaugrand

Great video as always. Thanks for sharing 👍👍👍

oh yea if i forgot to mention that, yes its rough glass. U experiment with the ior depending the angle of the light and ur shot.

Dan

i know its not important... but are u using octane exclusively? for me its crashing on every damn project and it drives me mad... been using it for years and love its simplicity and results, but godamn its buggy af. so i want to switch to redshift. are u sticking with octane?

Yes in everything, i ve done all sorts of projects since 2017 with almost next to no issues. I am sure its not octane but something in ur system/setups. Octane is super stable 1 year now fyi. It was crashy before, but I think most of the times user errors or known issues. I was using vray for more than 10 years I didnt get less crashes. U need to know what crashes each renderer and avoid it. Example: if u add vertex displacements on a mesh with triangles its gonna crash or be unstable, if u mess with osl it will be unstable and in general lack of optimisation makes everything unstable. Or if u keep everything procedural no reason, ur scene is gonna be prone to many issues. I work 10-15 hours straight without crashing with the newest versions while i throw millions of particles at it and press play while on LV. Sorry to hear ur experience is different!

its not perfect but no engine/dcc is perfect. Each one has flaws and u need to work around them.

Dude!!! This is insane!!!

Awesome, I've learned so many tricks. Thanks for that! Will there be also Part C? I've tried to come up with such nice frosted glass material but it still looks odd. Thanks for the answer.

Benjamin Trancart

I was wondering how you set up the specular/glass templates?

Nothing special there just bends as this was a custom design from MS. And the materials are a mix of diffuse (where letters are) with specular

Hey Thanos did you get any instruction from Studio in terms of design, style, or color palette? would like to hear that too

Mmm depends. CDs (creative directors) gather references that have a style/styles and sometimes brand colors can be very specific. As an AD my job is to find everything though, from color to design. References are there for inspiration. How to interpret them and bring a frame to life is what I do. In the very first stage of the projects, there is rarely any real guidance. We experiment and see, so yes, everything is my doing usually but always keeping in mind guidelines from client and have a feel about what they need.
