Hey Patrons,

This coming Friday /noclip celebrates its 9th birthday and we enter our TENTH year of production. Which is quite frankly wild. Thank you all so much for supporting us throughout that time - many of you from the start, or close to it. We are all so old.

We have a trailer / announcement video dropping that day but before we get to all that I wanted to round up our ninth year with a Postmortem Patron Show - looking back at the year that was and ahead to our tenth.

As part of that I want to do a nice chunky Q&A section - which is something we used to do more often and is usually a source of great discussions about Noclip's mission and future.

So please, id you have any questions / comments / concerns or pitches - please stick them in the comments below and I'll answer them in the Patron Show this month.

Nothing is off the table to please stick your questions below and I'll answer as many of them as I can tomorrow.

Thank you so much for supporting our work and helping us in our mission to preserve these development stories. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it with each passing year.

Talk soon,

Danny

Any plans for NoClip2 stuff on twitch? As an eternal lobbyist for more Fat Sessions that could be the vehicle for thier return.* *Also keen to hear more about NoClip2 in general

Ryan Grant

After nine years of doing this, what are the biggest lessons you've had to learn along the way? [Wishing you all great health for the year ahead!]

Blake

First of all, I love you boys thank you for your continued work. My question is for Jeremy: are there any specific resources you rely on (or more importantly, relied on when getting started) for your gamedev inspiration? Specifically, how did you go from *wanting to make games* to *making games*?

N.R. Jenzen-Jones

As advocates for preserving video games history, I would love to hear your thoughts on the broader landscape of preservation. What do you think the different roles are for the various stakeholders: companies, traditional museums, new/specialist museums, archives (physical and digital), games companies, artists, individuals, etc., etc. If, as a community, we are aiming to keep gaming history accessible in the future, which players would you like to see step up, and how?

Allan M Kaspar

Hey NoClip crew! All the love to y'all for the best 9 years in games documentaries! I'm so glad to have been a part from the early days. Some questions from folks in the discord: any updates coming to the noclip tape-archive? In regards to future projects: Any thoughts about going back to where it REALLY all began :) I think LucasArts and Sierra Online have had a ton of documentaries and coverage but you know what? What about Origin Systems? Lord British (aka Richard Garriott) is a super fun interview, but it would be cool to hear from other creators behind the Ultima Series. Hell, just hearing from folks of how in the hell they ever pulled off making something like Ultima 7 (frequently called one of the first and best open world games of its day) in their own custom engine would be a hell of a story in itself!

Allan M Kaspar

I've been asking for Origin Systems each year ;) come on guys! haha

Galen Ryder

Congrats on the anniversary! Is there a city you’ve been wanting to visit to film interviews?

Adam Marrs

Do you still plan to do a series that is a first hand account of what it is like to make and distribute a game? I loved the concept of a video series following Stunt Derby's development and release. This could create excellent "behind the curtain" moments where you show the realities of dealing with publishers, using Steam as a developer, etc. Somewhat similar: will the series with Heart Machine continue (or did that wrap up and I didn't realize it)? Thanks for everything you (and the entire crew) do!

Dylan Kelly

After talking with developers for so many years, what has been the interaction/interview that blindsided you the most or totally surprised you?

Derek Obrochta

Congrats on the milestone and look forward to your future projects every bit as much as was when you first launched. Wanted to put in plea for harmonix/rhythm game boom & bust story that could feature sit downs with john drake and other people who were around for guitar hero/rock band installments and get some good storytelling not just about history and development of genre but also memories of companies’ culture/licensing anecdotes. Thanks for looking at my pitch and keep up the great work!

Brandon K Gann

Hey Danny! You might touch on something like this before you get to my question, but after hearing Hugo Martin shout out NoClip to do a doc about speed running and with the more coverage focus NoClip_2 is going to take on, what other avenues of expansion is NoClip looking to do, if any at all? Loved the Wolfenstein doc and I continue to look forward to all the different projects which NoClip has irons in the fire on. Thanks for taking my question if you do, Happy 9th to NoClip, and have a great day!

Liam Fitzgerald

Congrats on the birthday! Important question: Is this Arsenal’s year? For the love of God, Danny. Please tell me it is.

John Frazer

Wow! 9 years?! Well done Danny and Crew! Going for some retrospective type questions rather than future-focused ones. - Is there a video that you've made that you'd love to go back and do again? Either because you don't like how it turned out when all was said and done? Or because you'd want to tell that story with new skills/knowledge/ability that you've learned over the years? - Is there a "one that got away"? A doc that you were excited to make, and were this close 🤏 to making but things fell through, for one reason or another?

Ross

I know it's not our Noclip boys, but there's a newgrounds doc on kickstarter! I backed it and they're like 6 months into the process

Nick

Answer as generally and nonspecific as you like — in the early noclip days, how did you balance a network of sources and connections that could lead to future projects? Reaching out to pitch a new story or project, seems like it must have been the hardest thing to not blend in with the rest of the noise and get a response that could lead somewhere.

Stephen C

3000 plus days of producing and editing the best games docs on the planet!! Thankful for all you've done over past 9 years. How do you guys navigate the embargo, NDA, review codes water's, especially with the future of NoClip2? Have you ever refused reviewing or mentioning a game?

Steve Fiori

Blimey, 9 years - I may even be day one IIRC! Congrats on the anniversary!

Jack Mayo

Happy 9th year! Thank you for all the great doc over those years and excited for the future! A few questions: How have the docs surprised you? Whether it was the making of them or the way people reacted? You mentioned before about making a video about the team, who they are and what their role/job in Noclip is. I'd love for that to still be a thing to introduce everyone, not just the podcast crew which shows both how small the team is but how much each person does. Know you've touched on this before but what the the funds you've gotten from secret tape has given you production-wise l, how this patreon ties into this and what it means for Noclip 2. Future projects requests - I'd love a CDPR level doc on Rebellion talking about the games, buying of 2000AD+ the treasury of British comics and their film studio if possible or even just their games? I know you talked about Atomfall on a podcast episode which was very interesting! Eastshade studios Star wars republic commando or any of the older star wars games.

Ross

How do you feel you guys have succeeded, failed, etc. in relation to your original stated goal over the past near decade?

Dylan Gearlds

So, is NoClip_2 what we are rolling with? It’s concrete? I was kind of into the idea of calling it Secret Tape or some other cool name to be treated as the sister project to NoClip, but either way I’m very excited for it’s vision and mission and cannot wait to see what you guys cook up there! Congratulations on NINE YEARS! I’ve been supporting for about five now, and I don’t regret a single minute of it. Big love to you all!

Eoghan Brady

9 years in! Congrats. I'm just curious what's the weirdest/most bizarre/interesting interaction you've had with any of the people you've interviewed over the years

SpongeguyPhD

What do the Financials of patreon look like? That public available info says 3-34k per month for noclip, I assume It'd have to be closer to the higher end to support all 4 of you, but also I know there's a lot of side work that is done as well.

Blake

Mega congrats!! The games industry is in a weird spot right now so I'd love to hear your thoughts about the future. What do you think the next 5 years looks like in the industry? 10 years? Obviously noclip_2 is a response to current changes, but do you foresee the main channel adapting any particular way as the industry does whatever it's going to do? Cheers to nearly a decade already and I'm massively looking forward to another one! PS and greedy extra question: Is Danny a time wizard? How do you raise a family, run noclip and all it involves while slinging another podcast and playing games? There must be a cloning facility...

StrandedCamL

Enough about video games. Lemme get a Quick Look of them goats.

Steven

Hey Danny, I heard you talking on the podcast before about diversifying your income stream with things like A16z games and secrete tape which I understand but I was wondering if it feels like that is taking time away from the not for profit docs. How do you prioritize your time between the main noclip and other paid work? Is it hard to manage that or have you found something that works for you pretty well? Also do you feel like you need the non patreon money to survive or is it more nice to have so you can do extra things? -Steven

John Cox

What interview related meal was most memorable (in a good way, preferably)? You've traveled a lot for interviews. Have you gotten lunch with some of the devs you were interviewing? Maybe found a restaurant overseas that you would have otherwise walked past but turned out it was really good?

Enocs

Congrats on the 9 years! Can’t believe it’s been that long already. I’m really glad y’all were able to make it this long and seemingly better than ever. I know the team is stacked as is but are y’all looking to expand with the new channel?

Traalshek

Hi! And happy 9 years! Did you ever think you would be able to have this sort of opportunity back when you were with Gamespot? I remember the documentaries you did back then and so much has changed! Any good retrospectives that have stood out between now and what you started with?

Brennan

Super proud and happy out of all of the patreons I support, that yall are still going long and strong. Cant wait until that 10 years is official aye. My question is, what doc has NOCLIP done that you think you're the most proud of SPECIFICALLY because you think story might not have been told otherwise? And/or which do you have the most pride for completing on a pure quality level?

Daniel Perry-Reed

I really enjoyed the dear dwyery ep with Charles Cecil, and as a point and click game fan, I have a doc request for anything from Revolution Software. it'd be great to go deep on the broken sword series, or on the studio as a whole. Thanks and good luck in year 10!

Alexandre Moreira

Congrats boys! My question is: With the rebranding of noclip_2 and the focus on higher volume of smaller videos that are quicker to make, are there plans for making Frank, Jesse and Jeremy's positions more concrete, ie: full-time, or is that still outside of your control?

bluphoenix

you've done a great job at keeping this whole thing sustainable so congrats on that. Any thoughts of doing collabs for some of the future NoClip2 Videos, that is having some guests from other places like minnmax/giantbomb/nextlander .

James O'Donnell

9 years is wild because I'll never forget you popping up on the Xbox 360 home page with your History of Max Payne EFMS episode which was god only knows how long before that and I've been a fan ever since. Congrats and thank you for all you do. Pro Ev documentary when?! All the best, boys!

Mark van Dijken

Do you have a favorite documentary (or documentarian)? If so what about it speaks to you. Thanks for the interesting and important work you do, proud to be a patron!

Spy_crab

Congrats on the great work and here's hoping the channel gets at least another 9 so it can legally drink XD. Here's my question to add to the list: Has the approach studios take with you changed over time? Are they more open now that you're a well known production or have any become more secretive knowing what their people say will go out to a large audience?

Yan Knoop

Congrats team! My question is: What is it that makes you go "I bet there's a story there" about a game or studio? Is there something y'all notice when playing a game, or seeing buzz in online communities? Curious to know what your documentarian antennae pick up.

Marc Burrage

Could the channel be a bit more Nintendo friendly? Sometimes the podcast especially feels like it's quite PC focussed (Frank is the main console guy), and some insight into your views across Nintendo would be a great addition. Understand though that it's quite a personal podcast about what you want to cover rather than what you feel you should.

Mikhail Kupriyanov

Congratulations on 9 years and here's to many more! A question - has there ever been a documentary which you filmed, edited but decided not to release for whatever reason, so now it's sitting in your metaphorical vault forever? If there have been, can you tell us what they were and what the stumbling blocks were?

David Vooght

Hi guys, I hope you're all healthy and happy. My question: With the release from SkillUp's Youtube channel of the 'This Week in Videogames' website - to promote and contribute to independent journalism rather than just commenting on things - how do you feel about this endeavour? Was this - or anything in this area - something you had considered branching into? Or would it stray too far from the Noclip mission?

Yuval Erez

Hi guys, great 9 years, happy to support this important work! Question/suggestion - how about a some doc about emerging gaming development markets outside euro/us? maybe some studios in Asia/Africa?

Yuval Erez

Suggestion for NoClip_2 - can you look into Back to the Dawn? really interesting RPG
