Hello Patrons,

This one took a while, I know - but we wanted to make sure we did a good job with the story of such an important game.

In this first in our 5-part-series on the development of Disco Elysium, we focus on the foundations of the game - namely the place and time it came from, and the D&D influences that laid the groundwork for Elysium, Revachol and Martinaise.

Our series will dive into art, design, writing, what happened to the studio around launch and just after - and where the series lies now. Our series focuses on the work, the team, their connections and how they collaborated throughout the project. The good and the bad. It mostly ends at the original launch of Disco Elysium - there are plenty of other stories that dive into the complex web of legal cases and infighting that came afterwards. But we will wrap up our story with some insights and thoughts into what it all meant to those who were part of it, the influence of the game, and what hopes fans should have for the future.

Massive thanks to Jeremy for doing the initial super-edit, to Frank for capturing the gameplay, and to the countless people I talked to both on and off the record about this story.

And of course our interviewees, all of whom had an appropriate level of skepticism when I approached them. I think this community and our work laid the groundwork for them opening up to us. We heard again and again that they only answered because they appreciate the work we do at /noclip - and for that I can only thank you.

That's enough from me - we hope you enjoy the first episode and let us know what you think in the comments.

Danny

I'm really enjoying this, had to pause to come back and ask: how much research did you do into Estonia and its history before you interviewed the team? It feels like so much of their story is grounded (naturally) in response to that environment. I can't imagine the work you put in to be able to speak deeply with them about that context.

A decent amount that is possible online and then the week I was there I asked a lot of people (interviewees, random people I met in the hotel / random bars) to get a broader idea. It’s a lot like my home town, layers of history that still affect the people living there even if they don’t know it all. Hopefully I didn’t misrepresent it too much. It’s always tricky to get a perfectly balanced perspective on history this raw.

In my own way, this game has always meant so much to me. So full of soul, art, and history... Yet a very personal journey. And this is the beginning of a documentary I always wanted to see. Your years and years of hard work established a reputation that allowed you to bring this to us. Thanks to all of you.

I thought this was really sublime, well done! I can't wait to watch the rest.

Fantastic work on this. One thing I've always loved about the docs is, where applicable, the work that goes into the culture and environment of where the games were created. Barely knowing anything about Estonia, it's awesome to learn all this and see how that influence comes across in the game. Just all around great work from all involved.

I think I could listen to Aleksander speak about anything, forever. He's very calming. I would believe he's never yelled a day in his life. Fantastic episode. I enjoy everything /noclip does, but documentaries from developers in this region of the world, those who's countries have endured extreme hardships or have lived under the umbrella of some horrible leadership, or next to it, they always ring true about life and day to day survival. Metro 2033 was one of my first adventures into this kind of detailed world that felt like it was ripped right out of a true-to-life tale, which made me read the novel, and then go on to read things like Roadside Picnic. Great job, team!

Fantastic work. Really appreciate the fact that you allowed yourself this much time to ”set the scene” and go into where the devs are coming from historically, ideologically and personally. Maybe Disco lends itself better to this angle than others, but I find it way more engaging compared to docs that end up just going into the nitty gritty of game design and production issues (though that obviously has place too). Can’t wait for the rest!

Estonian here. I think you did a good job. It was pretty nuanced for such a brief intro into our history. The soviet part of it is definitely the hardest subject there, given Robert's own views on it, but I think you handled it well. Can't wait for the other parts.
