PRIVATE EARLY ACCESS LINK:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6svs5J1NWc8

Hey Patrons,

Bit of a late night one here, but I just edited a thing and wanted to share it with you.

I  "wrote", shot and edited this episode of Bonus Level this afternoon. There's been a lot of chat about just how tough Sekiro is, whether it should have an "easy" mode, how that could affect the developer's creative vision and what that means for accessibility. I've found much of the discussion around this to be bizarrely cloistered so I put together a video which explains where I think the important part of this conversation lies. This filming and editing style was a lot of fun. If it works I think I'll do more like this. I'll let you be the judge of that!

Anyway, I literally just  finished editing and thought it might be a fun surprise for you folks in early access. So, surprise!

Let me know what you think.

Sekiro, Difficulty & the Importance of Perspective

Could Sekiro benefit from an easy mode? Does increased accessibility put the developer's creative vision at risk? Perhaps the truth isn't a matter of fact, but a matter of perspective. Every game doesn't have to be made for every person, because then it wouldn't please anyone. Personally, I'm having more fun in Sekiro than I have in any previous Fromsoft game. Mostly because I am better at the faster timing than the slower timings of the previous games. My biggest struggle with all of the other soulsborne games is that I react too quickly to the enemy attacks, so I miss the parries and such. In this game, that's a real advantage for me, and I'm loving it. And, I would also argue that Sekiro's prosthetic attachments are the same as the music box in Bloodborne - there is a specific attachment that will have that same or similar effect on just about every boss in the game.

I don't think that every game has to be perfectly playable by everyone, physical ailment or not. This game is terrible on keyboard and mouse - does that make it inaccessible to all PC FPS players who have never used a controller? Probably. But, to me, that's OK. Just like very fast paced FPS games are much more inaccessible to controller users. I just find the arguments that this game is "bad" because it can't easily be played other ways to be unfair to the game. It doesn't claim to be anything that it's not. it's not a point and click adventure game. It's not a word puzzle game. It's not a mobile game. It is exactly what it claims to be - a very fast paced, tight timings, very hard game that plays best one way. And, in my opinion, that's OK, and one of the things that makes it a great game.

Really enjoyed the edit style, Danny! The whole piece felt really snappy. Thanks for throwing your hat into the ring on the topic. It was nice to hear a more calm approach after some of the more vitriolic stuff the twitter hellscape has been throwing out all week. Fair play as always man!

You can't really have a definitive answer for something like this, only to keep trying balancing it out! Something you didn't mention on the topic of creative intent, games are an interactive medium, so you get a different version of it depending on the interaction with the player, their input, so you can't really pin down one version as being the one the creator(s) intended. You can take this even further as to saying the player is part of the creative process, since they're giving in the inputs for their version of the experience, but they have to be able to put in the necessary inputs, both be able physically and to have a satisfying experience. Anyway, interesting one, got me thinking there! xP Like the editing style too, but maybe a bit more cuts to examples to break the monotony of just you talking? Not that I don't like looking at your face ;) but I can concentrate more on the subject that way. It helps to understand what you say more if I can also see it while you're saying it, that's what makes video such a great medium. I'm sure you're quite aware of this of course, you do it most of the time, and this was a quicky, but just letting you know as feedback! ;) Great work! Can't wait for the GDC docs!
