Hello you wonderful Patrons,

On September 12th we'll celebrate our sixth birthday, something that I am incredibly thankful for and proud of - especially given how tough the past few years have been on our ability to produce compelling documentaries.

In our sixth year we produced projects on Prey, Death's Door, Deathloop, Chivalry 2, DMA Design (GTA & Lemmings), The Forgotten City, Hotline Miami, Black Mesa, Among Us, Bloodborne PSX and Rogue Legacy 2 (coming next week). We launched a new series on Hyper Light Breaker, an entirely new channel in Noclip Crew (which produced videos on Tunic, Unpacking & Weird West), ran a weekly podcast, started work on our own game, showcased the gameplay from DOOM 4 and Ravenholm and dozens of patron exclusive podcasts and videos.

Right now we're also going through some important transitions internally. We're setting up shop in glorious the north bay, actively searching for a new studios space, working on big in-person studio docs again, developing a bunch of exciting side projects like Noclip Crew, our game, and working on some new ventures to help build the team out and give us more resources than ever before.

As we approach the big day I want to check in with you, our community of patrons, to hear what you'd like us to focus on, what you've been missing out on, what you'd be happy to see less of, and the docs you'd like to see.

So please get in the comments and let us know what you think of how we're doing and what you'd like from us in year seven?

We're happy for whatever feedback comes to you but if you want prompts:

What are you happy with?

What could you do without?

Where are we felling short?

What docs would you like in year seven?

What type of Noclip content do you enjoy the most?

There are no wrong answers so please be as truthful and open as you're comfortable being. We truly appreciate it.

There will be a birthday stream even on September 12th so keep your eyes peeled for that. We'll also have a big patron update next week with a bunch of project updates.

As ever thank you so much for your incredible support. Here's to our most exciting year yet.

I love the focus on stories behind the games. That includes why companies make certain decisions, who the teams making them are, and the interviews with people passionate about their craft. This year's highlights for me are DMA Design, Black Mesa, Bloodborne PSX. I am also very excited about Hyper Light Breaker. The nuts and bolts of video game development are less interesting to me, because other channels are already covering that usually. The Noclip Crew interviews feel like something from a dev conference. While they are still well produced, they are less unique to Noclip (I still want to see Jeremy dive into the rabbithole though). I like Noclip for videos that only you seem to make.

Andrew O.

I know it's impossibly hard to get information out of Japanese developers, but I would love to see more from them. Companies like SNK and Konami have been working with Digital Eclipse in getting a lot of historical stuff out there. Digital Eclipse themselves would be interesting and would be a good start down that path. In the same vain, M2 and Hamster would be cool for preservation-focused info too. I always look forward to everything you put out! Keep up the good work!

What are you happy with? - I feel like I'm the happiest I've ever been as a Noclip supporter! I've been especially happy with the podcast, its entertaining and incredibly produced. I've enjoyed getting to know the other crew members. What could you do without? It must be tough having your revenue stream come from this platform and constantly having to sell yourselves for additional supporters - but I've started to skip the bi-annual "we're completely reinventing ourselves!" videos. Where are we felling short? I wish the Greatest Hits videos were more consistant. What docs would you like in year seven? A follow up with the Horizon team. What type of Noclip content do you enjoy the most? My favorites are the podcast and greatest hits, but I really love everything yall put out.

Richard Hayes

What are you happy with? I love the podcast. Specifically when the hosts talk freely about their own passions and projects. What could you do without? Some docs are about retro games that I didn’t play as a kid, so I feel no connection with them. For those docs, I’d need some short additional video to place the game in context. Also, I’m not sure I get much from NoClip crew, but maybe I just haven’t checked that channel out enough. Where are we felling short? Everything has a good balance right now. Although, I played mostly Nintendo games growing up, and sometimes it feels like we go awhile without a doc that I can strongly relate too. What docs would you like in year seven? I’d like to hear more about what Jonathan Blow is working on right now. And maybe a doc about Megaman Battle Network. What type of Noclip content do you enjoy the most? I like Jane Dev, the podcast, short (half hour) docs about small studios, the hyper light drifter stuff was really interesting, I like docs about indie games.

lucasw89

My favorite noclip documentary is still the Hades one :). The ravenholm one is my next-up. Generally, I like to watch documentaries on games I either won't play, or have played. I am happy that the documentaries still are there, if that makes sense. Just because I might not watch one of your documentaries right now, it doesn't mean I cannot watch them in the future. I prefer documentaries on games that have released, rather than "previews" of games in development. I often watch documentaries while doing something else, eg. grinding a game on main monitor, and watching documentary on the second. Therefore, something like the native-french segments in one of your documentaries (cant remember which one sorry) is kind of distracting for me. I would like to see some documentaries about how mergers and IP licenses affect studios. How about videos about how specific technologies / engines affect studios, and get passed around like the (criterion engine?) Furthermore, I like the long documentaries, however if you ever find yourself wanting to investigate shorter stories or ideas that might not make the cut for a long documentary, I wouldn't mind shorter videos there too :) I like visuals, so I don't really listen to the podcast. Also important is high video quality and no ads! 😝 Keep up the good work

David Finley

I primarily watch the shorter docs (Into the Breach-like), long ones (Arkane), and the multi episode (Hyper Light, Supergiant, Hitman). There's still plenty of those, so keep it up! I think if you found time to do brief episodes (10-15 min) on some of the indies this last year that have dazzled, that'd be awesome. Seems most successful games this last year besides Elden Ring have been smaller. OlliOlli World, Tunic, Neon White, Immortality, Inscryption, Cult of the Lamb. Some of those have less draw, so I get it if it wouldn't be worth the resources. Looking forward to another year!

What are you happy with? - Everything! - The quality of the finished documentaries and the hardwork put into them. - The feedback loop with community. What could you do without? - Podcasts, I rarely listen to them. (sorry) Where are we felling short? - Nowhere. - The transitioning stage and corona changed a lot of things. - Giving time and slow adjustments is something that I think is needed to get things back to "normal". What docs would you like in year seven? - I would like to see a bit more time given to the technical aspect of game development and the challenges in that area. Specially if the companies have their own engine. - I remember before corona you had small interviews at some events. Those were really nice. Was it called noclip Sessions? - Maybe some Insomniac Games? :) - I remember many years ago there was interest in some speedrunning stuff too? (Doom related) What type of Noclip content do you enjoy the most? - In order: Long Documentaries, small dev interviews(like Developer Breakdown or Sessions), Noclip Updates, the rest.

Eric Ellis

I would just like to see more videos about retro games. A decent number of your videos cover games I don't care about. But I still watch and find them interesting. Still can't believe you spoke with Bluepoint about Demon Souls instead of Colossus. But I guess that's probably what more people would rather watch. Keep up good work. I've been a fan for a long time.

fillitfillit

What do I want. That's eazy. More great doc's.

Kristyrfrisyr

Sorry, I don't have constructive feedback, I just want to say that I love your work.

Sydling

Happy with? - The content between the main docs! Big Jayne Dev fan and love the pod, nice to hear what the Noclip team is up to. Do without? - Trailers on the main channel, they just feel like clutter. If you feel they "work" perhaps just de-list them when the doc is up? - The Movie pods, would much rather have a regular pod that week. Falling short? - The best docs are done in person, glad they seem to be possible again. Year 7? - Obviously more in person. - Looking forward to getting more Greatest hits! Most enjoyed content? - Probably the Hades and Hyper light style docs. - The Bloodborne PSX one was one of the coolest and most interesting you done in a while too!

Hey Danny! Per your prompt suggestions, my answers would be Happy with: As always, just simply the work that NoClip does. While constantly being told "This is great," may be unhelpful, I'm of the opinion it provides a good baseline the docs *ARE* fantastic on top of all the other videos/podcasts being done. Do without: This is a hard one, because while there are things I've had to prioritize not listening regularly to anymore (a.k.a the podcast) for several reasons, I would be sad if everything NoClip does goes away. There might be episodes or videos that I would really be interested in that comes up in my YouTube subscriptions or Patreon feed I would care about, so I guess I have to provide another terrible answer whatever yourself and the team no longer find to be creatively fulfilling or maybe too much work for acceptable returns. Falling short: *MAYBE* (and this is a stretch of a reach of not-actually-accurate kind of maybe. The kind I don't really fully believe to be honest) is more consistent communication time-wise (Like a weekly/monthly check in). Granted, vacations, NDAs, secret projects, life-stuff, etc., all contribute to this not necessarily being needed (heck, if there was granular communication like a weekly check-in, I'm pretty sure you would be saying the same things multiple weeks in a row like "Still editing X project," or "Still talking with undisclosed parties on setting up a doc."). But aside from that, NoClip does so much I personally don't believe you all are falling short anywhere. Docs wanted in Year 7: Again, another terrible answer, but it is a two-parter: First, by no means would I ever expect you all to be able to do the list below. Heck, I wouldn't expect even a quarter of the list. But selfishly, more games I would be interested in (and I'm VERY sorry for this long list) are things like: Sony first party games AND studios The Ori games Portal (1&2) Mass Effect franchise Left 4 Dead/Back 4 Blood (so, Turtle Rock) The history of Wolfenstein (from the old school Escape from Castle Wolfenstein through Wolf 3D [& Spear of Destiny], to the PS2 games and eventually the Machine Games incarnation) Ghostrunner, F.I.S.T. (Forged in Shadow Torch) Resident Evil (the WHOLE shebang) Kena: Bridge of Spirits (and even Ember Lab as a whole) Superliminal Heretic/Hexen Yoku's Island Express The Metro series The other part of my answer is revisits: How's the team at Psyonix? What's happening with the Hillbilly Agenda crew? Any updates on IOI? Checking in with previously visited studios would be fascinating to see where they are now as opposed to the original docs. Content I enjoy most: Kind of full circle with the first answer, but the major documentaries are what I like the most (with the rare instance of getting to show never before seen footage of early builds or canceled games. Releasing the DOOM 4 and Ravenholm stuff is AWESOME). Overall, as always, super satisfied Patron here and wishing you and the entire team a heartfelt "Keep up the great work!" as cliche as it is. Thanks for reading if you do and have a wonderful rest of your day!

How about a super long livestream where staff (and friends) play a chunk of every game NoClip has done a documentary on - the inaugural NoCliparama

Hello! Appreciate all your work, thank you! One of the most inspirational part of my online content! What are you happy with? Pretty much everything that you do. What could you do without? Some very retro/old-school things in 2D. Saying this as a millennial, who's adores Thief, Unreal, Deus Ex, Kotor, Bloodlines. Where are we felling short? Noclip Crew stuff is on the short side definitely. Noclip Crew are docs about you guys in the first place. At least for me. And I like docs about people how create inspirational content! What docs would you like in year seven? "It Takes Two", "Cyberpunk" "Deus Ex Human Revolution & Mankind Divided", "Mass Effect & Dragon Age", "Bioshock Series", "Red Dead Redemption", "Deathloop" "It Takes Two" - One (And only, for me personally at the moment (2022)) of the most mind-boggling games in terms of gameplay mechanic diversity. The game has been tremendously therapeutic. (Therapeutic is a small word, cause we're played it during first months of events in Ukraine, so you can imagine, we're living there...) Very curious how such a masterpiece is conjured into being. Me and my girlfriend started to play chess because of it. One of the many minigames there :) What type of Noclip content do you enjoy the most? Your series and big doc format with depth dive into details of the development including personal contribution of the specific team members are the best. (Other Wilds, SuperGiant, Bethesda, Thief stuff etc.)

Andrew Jones

What are you happy with? -All of it, really. I originally subbed for the big docs, but I like all the extras. The podcast especially, particularly now it's actually regular, and of course Jesse has been a great addition to the team on that front. What could you do without? -Not found myself drawn to the extended developer breakdowns particularly. I find the edited down versions tend to cover what I'd want. Having said that, I don't begrudge them existing, might as well publish them since you have the footage, and I'm sure others enjoy them. Where are we falling short? -Feels like the greatest hits series has run out of steam a bit. Which is a shame because I've really enjoyed those, being an older gamer who played those titles first time round. What docs would you like in year seven? -There's a few very successful 'one man bands' who I'd be interested to see get a noclip style doc, like Lucas Pope or Eric Barone. Like with Lilith Walther's Bloodborne demake, it'd be interesting to hear the unique challenges and benefits of creating their games 90% solo. What type of Noclip content do you enjoy the most? -On a selfish note, Jayne Dev. As someone who occasionally meanders into Unity, then gives up, it's been nice to have Jeremy vicariously live that life for me! Although I think we have polar opposite struggles - I'm a C# dev of 15 years, so the code and A* search algorithms are a piece of piss, it's just everything else that genuinely baffles me! Anyway, keep up the good work, but don't anyone burn out! I feel like everyone's doing 15 different jobs simultaneously and it amazes me the quality content you consistently manage to put out!

Shaun Skena

I'd love to see you bring back something along the lines of Random Encounter. Docs on Control/Alan Wake and Valheim would be great as well.

David Vooght

Hi guys, Appreciate all the work you do. Been a patron for a while, but first time really providing feedback. What are you happy with? - As many have said, most of it. I enjoy the big docs, but if the smaller docs or other topics help keep morale and creativity up then I'm all for it. What could you do without? - I saw somebody say the monthly film review podcast. I actually enjoy that, it makes a nice change, but what annoys me (slightly, it's not a big thing) is the separate podcast patreon feed. I'd prefer it if the podcast wasn't a reward and all were just included in the main feed. Where are we falling short? - I've seen the updates and reasoning, but it seems like Greatest Hits has taken a hit recently (please pardon the pun).

startmenu

Something I have always found fascinating is when y'all talk to a dev about something that didn't go well with a game. These conversations are frank and insightful. This might sound strange but I would love a whole doc focused on a game that wasn't a success. Talk in depth to a dev about dealing with something not hitting at all and show that just as much design work and consideration go into projects that don't set the world on fire.

RickyWinterborn

i think ya'll are killin it. perfect amount of variety in the content while focusing on core doc projects. i like the more relaxed cadence of releases too, don't think you need to be dropping something every day. the podcast is great too, even when it's not the full crew it's always a good listen. IMO just keep truckin with the current approach

Jesse James

I've honestly been a little confused as to what is going on. I check up on the updates as much as I can, but it seems like year-to-year something new will be proposed, then it'll go to the wayside. As others have mentioned, Greatest Hits seems to be the most recent one. I do not mind supporting you all and your content, but if your vision keeps changing from year to year then how am I to know what I am supporting? Am I supporting the you from a year ago? Two years ago? Three? If we get an update on what you'll be doing during the seventh year of Noclip, will that hold true in the following year? We've all been enveloped in the recent years' events with the pandemic and offshoot issues, so I understand that, but I'd like to know what the more firm vision for Noclip is. Are we finally seeing it for this year, or will that once again change?

Blurbs

Loving everything, especially the Noclip Crew stuff. Would definitely love to see more casual live content on Twitch more often!

Snark_Nerd

It feels wrong to suggest anything, as even constructive criticism of your great work seems unfair. But I’ll just say that my favorite No Clip content is actually the podcasts. Thanks!

Timo Birnschein

I love the big in-studio docs. I even enjoyed Fallout 79 even though the documentary made the game look amazing while it was actually a major failure. The doc was super cool, though, and entertaining to watch. As far as constructive criticism goes, I wish there was a bit less swearing in the podcasts and behind the scenes. I remember one a while back from Tokio(??) that was pretty heavy and hard to watch as it really feels like breaking character when comparing it to the extremely professional documentaries. I'd love to see a doc on the original two Need For Speed Titles, Anno, the original Unreal, Crysis (probably unrealistic), the early lan party scene in the 2000s - how competitive multiplayer gaming was born

/noclip

Appreciate the honest response Jesse - and I agree, I'm not great at keeping people up to date on the mission and how we're achieving it or not behind the scenes.

Ampex

My favorite content is the big studio docs and the podcast. I would love audio versions of the extended interviews in the Patreon exclusive podcast feed. I feel like that would be a good way to consume this type of content that isn't as heavily edited as the docs. And making them exclusive for supporters would make it so they don't clutter the normal podcast feed for people.

Morten Madsen

What I like the most is the big in-studio docs. Priority to that. I would LOVE to see docs on Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Forbidden West and Spider-man ps4. :)

Sketch

What are you happy with? - I really enjoy the variety in documentaries! What could you do without? - I'm not quite sure tbh, so nothing really to add! Where are we falling short? - Maybe it's just me, but I'm feeling like year seven didn't have as many documentaries on indies as I was thinking it would. (Also the noclip-calender channel on the discord hasn't been updated since June 8th) What docs would you like in year seven? - More docs on smaller indie studios (maybe more one on one interviews), and some smaller docs talking about various gaming topics like the one about Easter eggs years ago which I really loved. I also would like to see more behind the scenes videos when it comes to seeing you take the journey to go to whatever studio(s) you need to on the Patreon in the future like the Tokyo videos you did awhile ago. What type of Noclip content do you enjoy the most? - While I enjoy all of them, I like the ones that focus on indie developers, and also the ones that talk about the community revolving around a certain game series like the hillbillies of GTAV or the Half Life 2 doc (I also really enjoyed the Designing Bugsnax mini doc) because I feel like there aren't that many of those out there on YouTube.

Eugenio Aguilar

I'll just start by saying congrats on another great year. You're doing amazing work as always. What are you happy with? As usual, the big docs are the best part. Greatest Hits and Developer Breakdown are great additions. Also happy to have a new ongoing series (Hyper Light Drifter), as the Hades one was amazing. I love when we get to have a good mix of recent and high profile (main docs), small but in-depth (Developer Breakdown), and classic/retro (Greatest Hits). What could you do without? Honestly, I don't really care much about a lot of the side content like the podcast and such. It's not that I mind them per se but I do wonder if they take away time/resources from working on the main content which I do enjoy and follow religiously (for example, GH seems to have gone quiet, not sure why that is) What docs would you like in year seven? FROM SOFTWARE ;P Final Fantasy 7 Persona Series Resident Evil Cave Story What type of Noclip content do you enjoy the most? Docs, it's what I'm here for :) See my answer to the first question.

Jake Hakim

Random shot in the dark, but an interview with Derek Yu about the iconography and mythology in Spelunky 2, and how they fit together to form the incredible and imaginative world contained in that game. I'm shocked that I've never seen someone ask him about the mythologies that influenced the game. Would be awesome!

icezolation

Just here to add +1 to the 'Everything is awesome, keep up the good work!' crowd. I swear, watching your documentaries and listening to the podcast has long since become a no-brainer for me!

Simon Johnson

Second dumb idea! Apple have talked big with their Pro phones (13 and now 14) being good enough for actual film use. Can Danny film, edit and post a 10-15 minute min game doc entirely on one of these devices (in a quality he accepts). Maybe make it in a mobile game too? Not sure what mobile devs you have close to do an in person interview with. (Not just saying this so you can expensive yourself a 14 Pro and a compatible external mic 👀)

Simon Johnson

Make it on Game Pass streaming with touch controls and see if you can get Phil Spencer for the interview!

Matt Nelson

What are you happy with? Everything is always done to a really high quality in general. I love the no clip crew content. Big studio docs and behind the scenes of the docs are generally what I enjoy the most. What could you do without? Don't think there is anything I would say to stop doing. In general a lot of the Indie studios don't always interest me as much. That said the Supergiant series and the astroneer docs are some of my favs. Maybe its more of a game by game thing that anything. Where are we felling short? I really miss the big on location docs. I realise thats not been possable in recent years though. What docs would you like in year seven? I would really love to see you guys do Bungie and or Halo. But in general more big studio docs and a return to the years 1-4 type of content as much as possible. What type of Noclip content do you enjoy the most? I started to list out ones that stood out for me but it ended up be pretty much most of the docs haha. FINAL FANTASY XIV always stood out for me though.

Brian L

What are you happy with? - Noclip documentaries are always extremely high quality, have great interviews and behind-the-scenes insights, and honestly usually have an unexpected emotional impact with their arc. What docs would you like in year seven? - This is a long-shot dream, but one of my favorite Noclip documentaries was the FFXIV series. Not only because it's rare to get interviews with Japanese developers, but because it actually had such great life lessons on coming back from failure and managing a team through unknown waters (I go back and rewatch it from time to time). I'd *love* to have similar docs for "classic" JRPGs, specifically Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG. It might not be possible since the devs have moved out to different companies, but interviewing the "Dream Team" (Sakaguchi, Toriyama, Yuji Horii) and other legendary developers who worked on those games (e.g. Yoshinori Kitase (producer), Yasuniro Mitsuda (music)) would be amazing.
