Hello Patrons,

Before I rush out the door for my honeymoon, I guess we should wrap up this Rediscovering Mystery series eh?

The Spelunky doc is an hour long journey covering the design backgrounds of its creators, and multiple elements of the game's design that combine to create it's unique blend of emergent madness.

Let me know what you think in the comments!

Thanks Bethan! :D I'll try!

Thanks for continuing to put out great stuff, Danny. You and Jeremy make a great team. I hope your honeymoon is even more eventful than your Tokyo trip. Enjoy the well-deserved break!

PSWiitch

You & Jeremy have done some phenomenal work trying to shine a light on important stories. Glad you're getting a break, and I can't wait to see what you have next!

One for the Spelunky fans I think. Having known nothing about the game previously I still don't quite understand what makes this game special, or what explains its critical/popular success. From the footage it looks fun, but so do many other 2D platformers. If viewers are expected to sit through a 20 minute biographical pre-amble (or "origin story" if you insist) then I think you have to make them care about the game first. I have less idea now than I did before watching how this game fits into the overarching "Rediscovering Mystery" theme. The good stuff: more smart, engaging interviewees; technically very proficient; low-key background music fits well; great interview set dressing!

Thanks for the feedback! To your criticism, I'm not really aiming to get people to like the games before we talk about them in any of our videos. I think I try and get them to like the interviewees while speaking to why the game is relevant. Games are too subjective to create a reason why a broad audience of viewers "should" enjoy them before playing them. Like most of our individual game deep-dives, it's most certainly for fans. Or at least with people with some prior knowledge of the game. Hopefully the some of our future videos contain game me you're more excited to learn more about. Thanks for watching too!

Danny another great doc, congrats again mate. I can see where Dom is coming from in regards to not being a Spelunky fan and not quite understanding why the game is so well thought of however I still thoroughly enjoyed the doc. Interviewees were great and the production values were once again exceptional. Also with regards to to the other criticism I believe the mystery part of this game was explained more in the first 'compilation' mystery doc and this latest doc was more centred on the development of the game and origin story of the key players involved (correct me if I'm wrong) which I thought fit well. Anyway enjoy your much deserved honeymoon mate and congrats on everything, forget about us Patreons - we'll still be here when you return!

Fantastic documentary, Spelunky has been on my radar before but this has convinced me to finally grab it, so much love and effort has gone into it. It's my birthday tomorrow so if I end up with a PSN voucher/card (though given I got a Switch last month, it'll likely be a Nintendo eShop one), I'll get it tomorrow! Uh, I'll get it even if I don't receive one TBH. And yes have an awesome honeymoon, you've worked hard, now for fun ;)

This is pretty specific, but I watched this video with earbuds and the sound design is really great throughout. Makes me wonder if I missed anything just watching your previous vids through my tinny computer speakers.

An amazing doc to an amazing game. It's great to finally put a few faces to the minds behind some of my fondest gaming experiences of the past few years. Danny/Jeremy, you guys did it again. Phenomenal job!

Dom Greves

I'm not saying the game's isn't special Danny - I was ready to be convinced that it is, but since I haven't played it myself and don't plan to any time time soon, the doc needs to do a bit more groundwork in establishing its credentials. Saying that everything is subjective doesn't really advance the argument. Clearly this game had an impact on many people - what I want to know is: why? The information conveyed in this YouTube comment would have helped I think: "The levels are randomized, but are built from handmade chunks that an algorithm fits together to make a winding path to the exit plus side areas." And a basic timeline: "The remake is from 2012 [...] The original was released in 2008." "The footage of the pixelated version is Spelunky Classic, the original freeware version, and the hand-drawn graphics are from Spelunky HD, the console/Steam release." Maybe that info was in the vid and I missed it. The phrase "emergent gameplay" certainly deserves to have been unpacked a bit.

Dom Greves

Ah, OK, so having done a bit more research these facts must also be key to its success: 1. Distributed as freeware. 2. Original has its own level editor. 3. Subsequently made available as open source and heavily modded.

Dom Greves

Hi Michael. Yeah, if I recall correctly the link to "mystery" in the first episode was pretty weak and I was hoping this dedicated episode might build on that. It didn't. As a freestanding entry in a "meet the developers" strand this would have fulfilled the brief I think, but expectations were raised. If the "emergent gameplay" aspects had been developed further this might have made a convincing case for its inclusion. But arguably it's about maintaining "surprise" and "novelty" rather than deeper "mystery" I'd argue.

Clay A Binkley

Very cool. Damn it, Danny, now I'm getting the itch to get back into Spelunky. What a great game.

Jason Tilling

I feel like I now owe this game another chance, played for around an hour and then dropped it. Great doc as always Danny, keep them coming.
