Hi Patrons,

I'll say it right off the bat, this is my annual post where I ask for your feedback on the docs you want to see, the work you want us to focus on, and what you'd like as a patron of Noclip.

But I also wanted an opportunity to talk about my dreams for 2024 and beyond.

To keep a long story short, Noclip is a fantastic position entering 2024. Our commercial work has given us a financial safety net that is going to allow us to do some really cool stuff next year. Jeremy is signed on to do almost twice as many days as last year and the rest of the crew are eager to do more work too. We are healthy, creatively hungry, and eager to make a big bang in 2024.

On top of that, thanks to all of your filling out that survey a few months back, we have way more insight into the ways we can improve this patreon, how we spend our time on the main documentary channel, and plenty of other things. All of this means that we'll be making some big swings in 2024.

But before we get into all of that - let's take a quick look back at 2023.

2023 Projects - How'd We Do?

How to sum up 2023. I think we tried our best to tackle a few big requests from 2022. Some of these were favorite games from that year, and others episodes of Greatest Hits that were constantly getting high votes.  That said we still had tight purse strings which restricted the scope of work we could do.

Given all of that, let's go through the docs we made in 2023. In order of appearance:

Gloomwood (one of many indie docs we did in 2023, a holdover from Developer Breakdown on Noclip Crew. It was fun to cover these types of games because we rarely do.)

Hyper Light Breaker Episode 2  (episode 3 was postponed twice, alongside the game's early access release. Expect Ep3 in early 2024. These series are slow burns but we like doing them this way - it's a fun creative challenge.)

Re-Making The Last of Us Part I (our first in-person doc outside of the Bay in quite a while. We filmed it in a day. One of many Jeremy edited)

Remaking Age of Empires (another Patreon request, one of our most watched docs of the year and a fun way to cover AoE without the OG developers)

Choo Choo Charles (I loved this project, the type of story only Noclip does.)

How Jirard Saved The Mix (should we delete this now? lol. great job by Frank filming a doc on the fly. Shame Jirard had such a torrid rest of the year with allegations of charity related shithousery.)

Vampire Survivors (puppets are hard work!)

The Making of Immortality (actors are fun work!)

The Making of The Burger King Games (Great collab from the whole team on this one. A nice mix of developer interview, human story, classic game, and weird fandom. Love this.)

NHL 94 - Greatest Hits (I had a blast working on this. Great edit from Jeremy and loads to sink your teeth into if you love the design of Genesis games.)

The Axis Unseen (Finsihed the year the way we started, with another indie doc of an unreleased game. It was great to talk about 76 too.)

Did you have any favorites? Let us know in the comments.

Aside from the docs we also continued out weekly podcast, uploaded a lot of video game video tape history and took a good creative swing at Noclip Crew. We learned some lessons on how much time and effort that stuff takes which we'll be bringing in to 2024.

2024 - The Big Picture

Next year we're making some big swings. Not just in the documentaries we do, but in all of our output both publicly and on Patreon. I've been working on a plan to make the most impactful and entertaining work we've ever taken on, while providing more than ever to members of our patreon.

This also includes fixing one major problem which is finding a way to properly speak to our documentary, podcast and crew audiences directly.

So let's talk about all three of them separately now:

2024 - Noclip Documentary Channel

Next year we want to focus on highly-produced, impactful work that makes the industry stop and take notice. And we have a few ways we're going to accomplish that.

The documentary channel will aim to create 3 high-impact documentary projects a year. Big stories on important games / studios / topics. These will be filmed in person, have larger budgets and be related to meaningful stories within our industry.

We'll supplement these big docs with punchier retrospective documentaries, indie docs and  featurettes (10-20 minutes). Similar to the current situation but with a clearer divide between the "big" and "small" sized productions.

PATREON: We are going to publish monthly behind-the-scenes videos. Some remote and others in our brand new studio spaces in my house. Jeremy is going to film a lot of these, along with the patron show and other content.

PATREON: We're also going to increase the number of extended interviews and bonus scenes we produce - both from new docs and our back catalog. You may have noticed an increase in these over the past few weeks.

2024 - Noclip Podcasts

We love doing the Noclip Podcast and it's continued to grow since becoming a weekly show during Covid. That said we also think there are opportunities for new types of podcasts that our current setup doesn't easily allow. So we're going to restructure this all a bit.

The current Noclip Podcast will be rebranded the Noclip Crewcast. It will retain the same format but we'll invite guests on and perhaps expand the panel from it's current three.

Jesse and myself and workshopping a brand new podcast which will focus on 1-on-1 interviews between myself and people across the games industry. The aim is to create nothing short of the game industry's foremost interview podcast. This will have Noclip Branding somewhere on it but given it's own strong brand identity.

We are aiming to keep both of these ad-free as usual.

We will be doing patron exclusive podcast episodes (*see Noclip Crew below)

2024 - Noclip Crew

Ever since I was making videos about video games I wanted to run my own little GameSpot, or in later years Giant Bomb. Next year we're gonna push Crew further in that direction.

We love doing Crew videos and think there is plenty more cool stuff we can do with it. That said I've always been worried in investing in it with Noclip Patreon funding as it is totally different work to our documentary / preservations work. So next year we'll be spinning Crew off from this Patreon, and giving it more of it's own identity.

With that freedom I want to build a best-in-class games video channel which allows us to flex our creative muscles outside of the documentary work. I loved growing up watching GameSpot and Giant Bomb, and I currently feel like there is no channel around that produced the type of VOD-focused stuff I fell in love with. I think there is a big hunger for thoughtfully produced videos and our team of editors are more than up to the task. That is the mission of Noclip Crew in 2024.

Weekly produced VOD videos and Podcast (The Noclip Crewcast - still on it's own channel)

Returning Shows: Quick-Look Style Game Recommendations, Jayne Dev, Danny Opinion Videos, Stunt Derby Dev Updates

New Shows: Danny FPS Reviewing Show, Video Game Movie Reviews, Long-Plays, Watching the Game Tapes, Collaborations with Industry friends, On-Location videos, Indie Game Showcases, Game Jams.

We are going to separate Crew from the Core Noclip Patreon funding. We're going to set up a seperate Patreon for Crew that will likely be initially free just to test the interest. If we feel like there is organic interest if the type of stuff we're doing over there, we will add low cost tiers (free/$3/$5) for extra videos / podcasts.

I have been resistant to having a second Noclip Patreon forever, but the audience metrics and the survey feedback all points towards this. Also it solves my long-running issue with using Noclip funding on stuff that isn't core to our mission here. We'll let Crew sink or swim on it's own - but I think we're gonna see it blow up this year.

Aside from these three pillars we will be getting back into the swing of uploading the game tapes. We had to stop for the last few months as work got too crazy and then the office move happened. With the team's increased workload this shouldn't be a problem again. All the tapes are now in a special climate controlled lockup - we'll be showing that off soon too.

Possible Documentaries for 2024

Like I said we have some big projects we want to take on in 2024. But we already have a couple of projects currently in production that you'll see in early 2024.

Return to Monkey Island

The Story of Dwarf Fortress

Hyper Light Development Episode 3

Aside from that I have projects that I'd love to tackle next year. 2024 is the 20th Anniversary of 2004, one of the biggest years in gaming ever. Alongside the 25th Anniversary of 1999 which had some absolute classics in it. It could be a good opportunity to do some well produced retrospective docs.

So here are some possible projects I'd love to tackle next year.

Unreal Tournament - 25th Anniversary

Quake 3 - 25th Anniversary

Half Life 2 - 20th Anniversary

Dreamcast - 25th Anniversary

World of Warcraft - 20th Anniversary

GTA San Andreas - 20th Anniversary

Silent Hill - 25th Anniversary

Crunch

AI

Baldur's Gate 3

Remedy

Cyberpunk

Stalker

No Man's Sky

Mini-Series on Games Journalism

Mega64

Wipeout 2097

Over to you...

Okay, it turns out I ramble in text as well as video. Above contains a bunch of big ideas and plans, but it's not the totality of what we have planned. The main dream is to create a Noclip that makes it's best documentaries yet, a series of fun and informative podcasts, and an editorial channel which echoes the best days of video game coverage.

But what would you like to see, as a viewer and a patron.

What docs should we work on?What patron exclusive stuff would you like? What do you think of our plans for Noclip Crew and the Podcasts?

Thank you all for your incredible support over the years. Noclip continues to be the best job I've ever had and I hope you have enjoyed being part of our success. Next year we're going to repay your belief in us three times over. Nothing short will make me satisfied. I feel like everything has lined up over the past few months, and it's time for us to pull the trigger.

Until then I hope you had a nice break over the holidays and played some of those video games.

Happy New Year! See you in the comments.

Danny

Great year of content like always, the NHL doc was an amazing way to end the year! Would love to see something on the XBLIG and XNA; the people at Microsoft behind it, a look at some of the very small teams that made games, and it's lasting legacy with things like Monogame and FNA. Not sure if that would be enough for a full doc, but whatever topics you do end up covering in 2024 I'll certainly be watching.

Eric Pihlblad

I'm not sure how you would do this but a retrospective history on the cross play movement would be super interesting. It changed how modern multiplayer games are made and structured and is something that is expected by players today. It also has its own set of weird industry growing pains around it as well.

Toby Reif

Next year will be 30th Anniversary of TIE Fighter, would love a look at it or the whole early 90s Lucasarts world!

J R

Man claims to be healthy than shows him chowing a giant pile of BK lol. Seriously though glad you guys are thriving and happy to be a tiny part of it

Veltis

Would love to see you take a look at Half Life 2, WoW, Silent Hill, Baldur's Gate 3, Remedy :)

MyNameIsFatMike

Very exciting plans, easy to see you guys are taking big swings like you said. Those are all fantastic ideas and I support them all. As for what I would like to see, I'll just continue to be a pain in the arse and say "Escape From Butcher Bay" 😁

Brian Marsh

I know it's not on your list, but I would absolutely love a Sierra Online/Roberta Williams doc. I've been reading through The Sierra Adventure and it's plain bonkers how many things we take for granted in gaming that started at Sierra. Otherwise, keep doing what you're doing - love the podcast, the quality/mix of length of docs, and the Patreon interaction. I would appreciate it if we could pick back up on more regular Discord video meets (both the monthly/general and the weekly-ish production meetings).

Sergey Kataev

Everything sounds really cool! Especially looking forward to more Crew stuff!

Kristian Koivisto-Kokko

Big yes for remedy, or maybe like a look back on how the Demo scene led into all the bigger Finnish studios like remedy (and 3d mark) and housemarque and bugbear and stuff (of course this happened elsewhere too, techland and stuff)

Mark_deLight

I second the Sierra doc idea with Ken and Roberta Williams, as those were the games that I absolutely loved growing up. Also 2nd the BG3 doc! Would love to see the Noclip treatment of BG3. That said, although I don't really know a good angle for it, I would love to see Noclip dive into the massive layoffs the gaming industry saw in 2023, even though 2023 was an absolutely banner year for gaming in general.

Danny Fallon

We've had only two episodes of Greatest Hits in two years. Both of them were bangers as far as I'm concerned but it does seem like an omission from the plans for 2024? Would love to know the story there - I'm here regardless but if you want dreams there's mine, a few more of those 🙏

Dennis Vinterfjärd

Thanks all of the Noclip crew for a great 2023, I'm super happy to be subscribed to this channel. I would love to see a bigger documentary on Baldurs Gate 3, or maybe even on Larian studios instead. They seems rather fascinating and like a unique studio right now being able to bring the CRPG genre to a lot of people who would not have traditionally cared about games in that genre. Also a; as you mentioned in the post about being a fan of giant bomb, I too have been a fan of giant bomb for a long time and i get very excited when you mention pushing the crew in that direction, I already think you are doing an absolute fantastic job right now with the podcast.

Andrew O.

Aside from the BK documentary focusing too much on that weird hoarder, I have no complaints. Next? Continuation of FFXIV VGHF / Preservation Treasure Digital Eclipse SNK Umihara Kawase Predatory Development: How games get you addicted, how WoW ruined lives, the mobile space, etc.

FR Enjoyer

Here's a wild idea, make a small video about porn games specifically on how's the life a porn/erotic game developer and the business side of it. Mainstream media normally doesn't cover it with good reason, but it will be interesting to see the though process of how those projects are made, the market of those kind of games, and the legality on how they operate. Because to be honest I'm completely ignorant of that side of the industry.

thatJoshieJosh

Of that list I'd be most excited about a Stalker doc, especially with Stalker 2 coming out. There's an incredible Stalker mod that's revamped the game into it's own standalone that's pretty great. You could maybe touch on Stalcraft as well, a F2P Minecraft-looking Stalker that has been cool to play around in.

MittenFacedLass

Sounds exciting! Looking forward to seeing it all come together!

Casey Holloway

oh my god... i am begging you... PLEASE do something related to silent hill. i would die happy 😭😭

Michael Gibler

Have you considered a doc on Runescape? The MMO has been around for over 20 years now and just experienced its highest ever player account in Old School Runescape (OSRS). OSRS is the version of the game circa 2004, and anecdotally it seems a lot of people dabbled with the game at some point growing up, especially in the 25-35 year old age range. Itd be interesting to learn of the ups and downs downs, the successes and failures of the game over its 2 decade life

Oliver Cant

Firstly congrats on such a great year! Secondly I live you saying you're gonna do more 20-30 stuff, because that means you cover more things. I'd love to see you do more stuff like you did with the GDC interviews. Thirdly, if you allow be greedy for a sec, I have 2 requests: 1. A history of 90's Rare. Those games are special to me growing up with them, and I especially wanna know the stories behind Perfect Dark and Jet Force Gemini. Even putting up as an option for Greatest Hits would make me so happy. 2. Kind of another oldie, but I would live to see you talk about WH40K: Dawn of War. A classic RTS series and one that I don't think has really had it's development story told. Plus, I've just been feeling nostalgic for it, lately.

Jazz Jackrabbit

I'll be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about a second Patreon especially since it's all still under the "Noclip" brand. Also I'm a little confused on the podcast still being on its own channel but then the patron exclusive episodes would fall under the Noclip Crew patreon? Maybe I need some sort of visual guide to understand it. I'd love to know what specific survey responses/feedback led to that decision. The content itself, however, all sounds great. As far as future docs go, I know it's been thrown around before but I would still really like to see something on 2000s flash games. I know Danny has talked about doing something on Newgrounds as a possibility.

Nikos Steiakakis

I as well second (third?) the Sierra online adventure games documentary. I guess it might be kind of hard since the audience for these games (we) might be a little older, but these games were really influential and of course Sierra was a major part of games history.

Nick Hide

Still hoping for any of Civ, XCOM and Firaxis, but this all sounds amazing ❤️

Carl

I have many fingers crossed for UT 25th anniversary getting a huge 3 hour documentary. More point and click adventure games wouldn't go amiss either! I'd love to know about the white box process too, back in the day they'd republish games, normally 2 to a box.

Aristophan

A Dreamcast doc sounds exciting to me. Perhaps it could focus on the launch, since the system had a strong initial slate of games.

T Dubby Dubz

Congrats on a killer year guys! I'm a weirdo who supports Noclip almost exclusively for the podcast. So more podcast stuff sounds great, I just hope the current magic survives the slight restructure, which it sounds like it will! Unreal Tournament doc sounds great, I put many many hours into that game. It's perhaps too big a scope for a single doc, but I'd love to see a documentary about the entire journey of Epic Games and the Unreal Engine. I feel like there is a real interesting Riches to Rags to Riches narrative in there, ending with their world domination. Love you all, and thanks for the many great game recommendations!

David Vooght

Happy New Year to the whole team. 2023 was a great year and I'm happy you feel the whole setup is in a good place moving forward. To answer your questions: 1. You included it in your possible list, but I think World of Warcraft would be an incredible documentary. For better or for worse, it was a massive part of my teenage years before I dropped off, but the options to explore this could be massive - e.g. history of Blizzard, MMORPGs entering the mainstream, the recent troubles with Activision Blizzard etc. 2. I don't particularly care if there is patron exclusive stuff. If it's high quality or interesting I'll watch it, but I don't need it to specifically be patron only. 3. I think the plans for the podcasts sound great. I listen to other podcasts that have a similar setup, but that tends to be more main pod and then a Q&A pod. Having a regular Crewcast to keep the interest building while you find your rhythm for the interview podcast would be good. I'm not a huge fan of having a separate Patreon for Crew, but if that is what the metrics are telling you to go for then I'd trust you. As for the ideas, it all sounds good. As an additional point, I'm not sure how it would affect things technically, but would it be worth going back and editing thumbnails for older documentaries so they all fit a cohesive theme? You've had an intro for Greatest Hits, but maybe an clear indicator in the thumbnail to confirm if it's a main documentary, or a shorter look, will help denote things for new viewers. One the points I haven't liked is how some ideas seem to come and go, or get squeezed out due to lack of resources. It sounds like things are in a much better place, but I hope new ideas are given a chance before they are stopped. Lastly, for the Jirard doc I would suggest keeping it. But if you could edit a brief intro message - or at least add a pinned comment - it would make it easier to understand.

Daniil Shevtsov

Kinda related to Crunch doc: I've been thinking about Scribblenauts and reading up on the bits that are on the internet. When people were asking what cool technology and systems did creators used for Scribblenauts, the answer was expected but sad nonetheless. According to now deleted twitter thread by Liz England this was done through manual labor and crunch (https://kotaku.com/the-secret-behind-scribblenauts-making-objects-by-hand-1796262472). A reddit user checked everyone from Scribblenauts credits on linkedin and confirmed that no one apart from studio owners is left (https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/3q4f79/the_entire_team_of_scribblenauts_is_gone/) Although high turnover is unfortunately not rare in the game industry, I think it's an interesting angle that this unique ambitious successful game was realized through manual labor and crunch, it seems made possible because of it. But at the same time the inevitable result of this crunch culture is that there are no original creatives left and the game series is basically dead. I don't know what the real reasons were, maybe some of the people left during the standard game industry turnover and the rest were laid off because of the financial troubles. But it would be interesting to learn more about the people behind Scribblenauts and how this ambitious game came to be.

/noclip

Oh no way we’re gonna continue to do retro docs, either big ones or in the 20-30 minute range mentioned above.

Alex N.

Please do the Wipeout doc! Although I think to do it justice, you'd have to spend a good amount of time talking about 90s music and try to interview Designers Republic folks. I think doing a longform piece on crunch culture in the industry would be one of the most powerful things you guys could do (assuming that's what "crunch" is in the list). As far as what's not on the list: this is a total, complete moonshot, but I've been playing a bunch of re-releases of SNES/Mega Drive era games by M2 recently - I'd love a doc on their work and technology and how they approach preserving classic games through high-fidelity emulation on modern platforms.

Shaun Skena

Quake 3, Half-Life 2, Remedy (specifically Alan Wake and Control) all sound great. Some things I would love to see you guys do docs on: Call of Duty 4. One of my favorites, and everything I've ever read about it's development has only made it more interesting. The original Ratchet & Clank trilogy. They are in the middle of their collective 20th anniversary. The Pandemic Studios Battlefront games. Also approaching 20th anniversaries, and with the canceled/leaked third game I think would be interesting. Others I'd like to see: Jak and Daxter, Ace Combat, Uncharted, Bioshock Infinite. Love what you guys are doing and I'm glad to see you're doing well.

A Big Old Skeleton

I'll be honest the thing I am dying for is a proper documentary about Doom (you know, the first one. Not the other Doom, that's already there and whips ass) or Quake. I realize a lot of this ground got covered in book form, but I'd love to get something like that. Or failing that, something about Apogee games would rule. I wanna hear about how Rise of the Triad came about, mostly, or all the other stuff they got up to. Tom Holland seems neat, I wanna hear him talk about making RoT.

Vega

Awesome 2023, thank you for all of the content. I like all of the possible documentary ideas, all of them interest me. If I had to choose the top 3 it would be Balder’s Gate, Cyberpunk, and any of the anniversaries. If I had to choose a bottom 3…I couldn’t, they all sound good. Crunch is the only one that I wouldn’t want to hear about. Not that it isn’t important, I would rather hear about games.

FGME

I think the next 2-4 years could be really focused on the 25 years anniversaries comming up. You basically started a series (without realising?) by doing the Half-Life 25 years anniversary, which could go all the way to Halo and Max Payne in 2001/ 2003. I think these games are stuck in collective minds, because in my opinion those (incl. Half-Life) layed so much ground work for the next 25 years in terms of technical achievements, story-telling and character-building. Apart from open-world (which I think can trace it roots back to Far Cry 1) maybe all the innovations are still driving todays games. The personal stories behind these things would interest me the most. From experience I probably have overlooked a couple of aspects, but I am sure these are stories you will find and supprise me/us with. Thanks for the great year, see you in 2024!

- Unreal Tournament - 25th Anniversary - Quake 3 - 25th Anniversary - Half Life 2 - 20th Anniversary - Dreamcast - 25th Anniversary - World of Warcraft - 20th Anniversary - GTA San Andreas - 20th Anniversary - Silent Hill - 25th Anniversary Oh...god, I'm getting...OLD...!!

W. Fry

Would love to see a documentary (interview? really anything) on n, N+, and N++. Metanet is only two people, but they seem like lovely folks. I believe 2024 will be the twenty year anniversary of the original's release.

EndofMedia

First year as a patron and I definitely plan on continuing on as one thanks to a brilliant 2023! I've always enjoyed all the stuff which appeared on the NoClip Crew channel, so I'm happy to see more of that coming in the future. Not particularly fussed about more content for the Patreon as I'm a patron to support the crew, but I know that's not the case for everyone. As for documentaries, I love the idea of the anniversary edition doc suggestions you've got there. Silent Hill would be good. My suggestion would be for one about THQ, specifically the original one and not the more recent version of the company. I think it would be interesting to look at their rise and fall through the perspective of the developers who worked for them over the years.

Kevin Thompson

A Dreamcast doc would be incredible. I remember feeling like that console had so much promise. I was first in line at my local mall on 9/9/99 and was interviewed by the local news about why I would wait in line for it. I'm sure I'd cringe at whatever I said about it as a teen.

Ivo Robotnik

Man those all sound at least great. Top 3 I'm most interested in: -San Andreas (I mean R* is infamous for secrecy) - Crunch, we shouldn't stop talking about it until it's not the rule anymore, even if it's just showing a light. - Silent Hill, always more Japanese stuff, way too little if that I'm very much looking forward to more game Tapes. Cheers NoClip Team, great work

Dark Insanities

Dreamcast, my first console. +1 to this for sure. I'd also be super interested to have a doc on Introversion Software. Uplink, long ago, then Darwinia. Prison Architect (which they sold to Paradox), Scanner Sombre, and currently The Last Starship. Also, the dev diaries they do are cool. They also had about a year where they looked at a bunch of their own failed prototypes and talked about what they were aiming for and why they were ditched.

Juan

Thanks for the amazing work that all the team does, the future plans look great and I'm sure we'll enjoy all the new projects you are working on. As a topic for next year I would like to propose a video focusing on the recent wave of layoffs in the videogame industry, to shine some light on the trends that may have originated them and more important the impact on people. Videogames are a product of passionated developers and therefore I think it is important to give a voice to those affected and to understand what does it mean for videogames as a medium.

Brandon K Gann

Hi Danny! Great roundup and the exciting future for NoClip you've laid out. Per your posed questions: Docs should work on? - Ultimately, whatever makes yourself and the team energized and excited to do. While I have personal interests (Like how Square-Enix is tackling the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy project to name just one), NoClip has *mostly* done projects that I may not have initial interest in, I still watch because I learn about many things I otherwise I have no interest in. Patreon exclusive stuff? - I'm completely fine with the Patreon rewards as is. The Patron show is always rad, and complete uncut interviews are always a plus. Since behind the scenes videos are coming, there's nothing else that appeals to me, especially consider you incorporate Patron feedback quite well. NoClip Crew and Podcast plans thoughts? - Of everything discussed, this grabbed my imagination the most. I would be very interested in pledging to a Crew-dedicated Patreon, of the bullet points you gave, the following have me the most eager: Weekly produced VOD videos Quick-Look Style Game Recommendations Jayne Dev Danny Opinion Videos Stunt Derby Dev Updates Danny FPS Reviewing Show (May I recommend Prodeus?) Watching the Game Tapes Collaborations with Industry friends On-Location videos My lone concern is all that you outlined seems like a lot, so I'm concerned some things may drop by the wayside or be only done very occasionally/rarely (like, three or four times a year), but aside from that, two thumbs up on everything. Hope you've had a wonderful Holiday season!

Brainfreeze

What docs should we work on? Off the top of my head, I'd like to see a doc on something like Fraymakers - how does licensing work with a bunch of indie companies? How involved are they in the representation of their characters? We know these things are very bureaucratic at AAA companies, but I like to imagine it's more casual at small companies. What patron exclusive stuff would you like? I love the monthly Patron Show; beyond that I'd mostly just like uncut or extended interviews and such, which you've already talked about. What do you think of our plans for Noclip Crew and the Podcasts? I love the current podcast, and the more essay-driven content on Crew is absolute ace. The changes to the podcast sound positive, but I am a little worried about the Crew changes. I get that it's hard to give it the attention it deserves right now, but I see my pledge to NoClip as a pledge to supporting Danny and crew at whatever they do. A second patreon feels like I'm being made to choose one or the other, but what I'd like to do is support both in one pledge and let y'all as a group decide how to allocate that money based on your own passion and read on the audience interest level. If this change leads to more content on Crew and ultimately more success for NoClip then I'm all game, but I do worry that judging the interest in it based on how many people will support it on its own might wear the existing audience a little thin. I hope it all works though, as I'd love more game dev vlogs and thinkpieces.

John Cox

Docs: 1. Starfield What was it supposed to be from the devs' standpoint? Did they release what they originally envisioned? All I know from the outside is the final product and how it didn't resonate with most of the audience. It was cool at first, but got tedious. Why was this the product that got released? Was this what the developer's envisioned or is there more to it? 2. Star Citizen (if you're feeling really crazy) They actually did it. It took a decade+, but they it's looking like they actually did it. It will be a product.

Everdred

If you end up doing a dreamcast doc it would be really neat if you could talk to some of the fans keeping a small community going. There are new fan translations every year as well as tons of games with revived network support. Clearly some passionate people there

Demstel

Unreal Tournament

Keegan Zykowski

Well done in 2023 everyone! Here's to 2024. I think Cyberpunk (read: CD Projekt Red) and Stalker (read: GSC Game World) could be great projects to work on. An analysis on crunch in video game design could also be an important one. Personally I think Oddworld Inhabitants, Irrational/Ghost Story Games, 4A Games/Metro, Epic Games, and Kojima Productions would be great projects too. Honestly I probably wouldn't divide my interest between two Noclip Patreons, however if the metrics say otherwise, then go with your gut; it's in your best interest. Regardless, the variety of topics you've mentioned for Crew look top notch!

My god pleeeeease do Remedy!!!! Since you guys rocked the Immortality doc so hard I keep thinking how amazingly intriguing Remedy's media crossover style would be in a noclip doc! Plus also Silent Hill would be neat :) Please and thank you

Marcus Windmark

Thanks for an amazing year and I very much look forward to all the great ideas of 2024! I would love a Greatest Hits with World of Goo. A game from 2007 that has aged very well. Also, a sequel was just announced for next year so it would be a good opportunity.

Yan Knoop

Thank you for 2023! I loved the range of documentaries, from big to small games, old and new. I'm looking forward to the next episode of Hyper Light Breaker. For 2024, Crunch or Remedy would be my picks from the list. What I'd love to see is a Team Fortress 2 doc, how it changed development through its ongoing updates and how influenced the Steam economy.

THE CRAWL - Brendan Hesse

This all sounds very exciting and I’m excited for what sounds like a Big NoClip 2024! Of the documentaries listed, I was actually going to suggest UT, WoW, and Mega64, coincidentally. So those get my vote, in that order of interest!

MunnyShh

All in all, everything makes sense. The Crew content is not something I notice often because I am not a Youtube-centric viewer. I tend to miss this if it isn't in this curated list of Patreon feeds I directly pay for. No strong views here. I am glad to hear Dwarf Fortress and and Return to Monkey Island. I feel I've heard about these for a long time. Your idea spaces sound good. A few suggestions for short indie supplements to the big ones...Chants of Sennaar, Lethal Company, Venba, Jusant. Any of the more acclaimed indie releases this year as they may be better for viewership as well. Also, what about revisiting IOI for a shorter follow-up from H2/H3/World of Assassination? Just a thought. Cough Stardew Valley Cough - if ConcernedApe is willing

Jason Ruvinsky

I'm most interested in Baldur's Gate 3, Dreamcast, Games Journalism, WOW, and Mega64 from that list!

I think all of these plans are really good! I think splitting up big documentaries throughout the year with smaller featurettes is a good idea (I don't have all the time in the work to watch a lot of the longer ones sadly, but I'm trying to keep up and I enjoy the smaller ones). As for dividing the the crew stuff from the regular Noclip identity, I feel a bit mixed on it. On one hand, I agree with giving it's own identity compared to the documentary channel as it makes it clear between smaller content and bigger content if they want to look for that. But on the other hand, I don't personally agree with making another patreon for it as I feel like it would divide some folks like myself. I am a longtime patron who loves both content a lot, and I personally don't want to spend more money on this than I already am (if only there was a way for existing patrons who want to support both get a slight discount or something like that). Either way, I'm very excited to see what you guys got cooking in 2024 and my support will continue no matter what because I believe in your vision and quality content!

Joachim

All for the new plans, sounds really good! As for the split between bigger and smaller projects, that’s something I also really like. Lots of games would be interesting to see but probably don’t warrant a huge 1.5h episode. As for documentaries I’d like to see, it’s lots of stuff from the 80s or 90s. E.g. Commander Keen, Shareware games, Drakan, Slipstream 5000, Crusader No Remorse / Regret, Z, Dungeon Keeper, Heavy Gear 1&2, just to name a few.

Thanks to you and the whole team for an amazing year 2023! Although I often wished for a bit more constancy with projects like Greatest Hits, I'm always impressed by the work noclip does. And so I'm in with whatever the team will tackle in 2024. Just one idea, that's a bit different than the other ones... what about a gaming history of ireland?! I would love watching a kind of roadtrip with the team around the Island, visiting interesting places of its gaming history, talking to people from the industry and getting a feel for a place and its gaming history -- Journey across Japan - Gaming Style. And if it works out, maybe there are other places to go to in the future...

Frank Rooney

Thanks for all the great work Danny and team! I enjoyed a lot of the videos this year, AOE, Immortality, NHL etc Looking forward to next year 👍

Simone Vihinen

+1 Unreal Tournament or Quake III (I want to find out more about the bot AI in Quake III as it's something a bit mythical)

Soular

I just gotta reiterate that I am SO EXCITED FOR NOCLIP CREW!!!!

Christopher Buteau

Demeo Me and my friends are into it....i would love to hear the ideation and evolution and technology hurdles.

Ivan Mikulic

Would love to see some indepth doc on Path of Exile/GGG. Also, maybe a short spotlight for Song of Conquest, the game I'm really loving right now...really nice throwback to HoMM.

Sokar

I think a sort of "Duel"-Doc about Q3A and UT99 being released only weeks apart and with a clear focus on (online) multiplayer, but a different focus in style (Q3 is deathmatch perfect, where UT focused on the team mods) would be interesting. For me personally, and I think I said it before, would be "The Rise and Fall of Ensemble Studos" my dream doc. I read post mortems and other articles about one of my favorite studios, but so much is still in the dark. The AoE2-Doc was for me as an self proclaimed Age-of-Empires-Super-Fan a bit disappointing, as there is so much more to this franchise and its history that could be covered in the less than 30 mins that mostly focused in the its revival over the last years.

Salar

Noclip Crewcast. LFG! Honestly the best podcast out there. Ya'll had the best GOTY discussions.

Ross

Honestly, your podcast entirely snuck up on me. I started out listening to the podcast on occasion due to the documentaries, but now I feel like I am in “contact” with you all much more because of the podcasts than the actual YouTube channel! Definitely my favorite benefit you guys put out there, keep it going forever!

Jon Power

Thanks for the update! Looking forward to an amazing year with the Noclip crew. My personal picks for 2024 doc would be No Man’s Sky, Quake 3, and Half Life 2.

Will Thompson

For the big doc, BG3 has *got* to be a top contender. From the devs to the VO talent to the D&D community angle, there's a ton of stories to tell. Another idea - and maybe this is a topic for a Danny opinion vid or a Dev Diary thing - is to take a look at the story of a trope or feature in gaming history. Like "How multi-player evolved" or "Why we love silent protagonists". Might be a good way to tie together some unused or unrelated research from previous interviews too, or from the big content salvage you did this year. Thanks for everything you guys do, this year has been a blast. Keep it up!

Alex Epton

would love to see a no clip doc on BG3! also super excited for more crew stuff. also the podcast is one of my favorites so a second interview podcast would be awesome!

Jason Harter

I would love to see a doc on SpaceTeam. It is one of the best inperson gaming experience I have ever seen/ witness. The original creator has a patreon and has had to take up a regular 9 to 5 job to support his family after creating and developing 3 different great games. It is super indie, but is deserves a spotlight!

Jason Freidman

I'd love a doc on No Man's Sky! I love the exploration in it but would be curious to hear more about the intent behind the game and what experiences the team wants the game to create for players . World of Warcraft would be best for nostalgia! And I'd also like to know how the team felt in the first few years keeping up with players blasting through raid content.

Hen Peng

Thanks for the update - great to hear about the plans for 2024. I have loved the evolution of both the podcast and NC Crew channel, which allow for your personalities to shine, and for you to explore elements of video games in a more 'informal' way to the main NC channel. Will definitely support the crew patreon. As for 2024 documentary ideas - I would love to see something on Silent Hill.

Michael Webb

All these ideas that you mentioned sound amazing: World of Warcraft - 20th Anniversary Silent Hill - 25th Anniversary Baldur's Gate 3 Cyberpunk I'm especially interested to hear from CDPR because I think it was popular to hate on them for a while, and hopefully they've turned around the public sentiment.

Kono

Happy new year! Could we see things like Don't Shit Yourself (I am not shitting you, it's an old flash game haha) Bloodborne (if possible...) HiFi Rush! Thanks for all the hard work and interesting vids!

Andrew O.

Increpare games. -Stephen's Sausage Roll -English Country Tune (There's a whole puzzle scene I've recently found out exists.)

Paul Davies

Happy New Year all! Some great ideas above in the top list and comments, Wipeout and Relic/Dawn of War would get my vote but that's probably just me being selfish. I'd really like someone to do a short doc on Acid Wizard though, what the story was with them developing Darkwood to such acclaim on limited resources, then pivoting to announcing a soccer tactics game(!) before going on a hiatus. Feels like a story to be told there, especially with what happened with the Unity Engine outcry last year which Darkwood runs on, but it might be too soon from the point of view of the devs maybe. However, as a man of the wilderness and a survival horror fan I could definitely see Jeremy having some fun with this, particularly after his excellent work on the Signalis video.

Gribb85

Dreamcast 25 Year Anniversary doc would be grand. Life, Death and rebirth of Sega etc. Again good redemption arc there.

John Frazer

I love everything in this. Excited to see what comes with NoClip Crew. Of the possible projects, HL2, GTA:SA, BG3, and Mini-Series on Games Journalism stand out the most to me. I hope I'm not too late to make suggestions to add to ideas list! I'm not sure if either of these would be something that you're interested in, but two that have come to mind recently are Football/Championship Manager, 90s/00s gaming TV and/or magazines. For Football/Championship Manager, an angle that's not just a "history of" that could be interesting could be looking into what makes playing with a spreadsheet so interesting. And for the other idea, I loved getting gaming magazines as a kid and I feel like there's some stories to tell there. Same for video game TV shows (Gamesmaster and Games World are the main two that I've been thinking of).

Hugh O'Brien

11 bit studios could be great, let me suggest some childhood PC loves also: 1. Total Annihilation -> Supreme Commander -> BAR -> Spring -> ? 2. Homeworld 3. Alpha Centauri (huge Frank Herbert basis), also Bing Gordon has a fascinating career https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bing_Gordon 4. Red Alert 2 Braid anniversary edition is coming out also

Joosh

I'd love to see something about chrono trigger or even path of exile.
