Hello everybody, version 0.4 is released and with it, the first chapter of Covenant of Morn finally came to a conclusion. Now I feel like the game itself and I as a developer reached a big milestone. Enough reason for me to take a look back, at what went right and what went wrong, as well as what that means for the future. This update is pretty personal, more than my usual stuff. But I felt like it was important to talk about it, be transparent.

THE MISTAKES:

The planning for Covenant of Morn began as early as 2021. Back then it started out as a tabletop roleplay game that I made for myself and friends. I ended up liking it so much, that I decided to make it into my next NSFW game. Very much to the chagrin of a good friend of mine that has always been my go to guy for feedback on ideas. He preferred another idea of mine, that I'm not sharing here as it might still become reality in the future. The funny thing is, even though I went against him, he was probably right. The other idea would have been much more popular.

That was my first big mistake. I didn't understand my own community. Or saying I wasn't understanding them is a misreprensentation of what happened, I misjudged them. When I made CoM I knew that some of my choices would be unpopular. But I was convinced, as long as I keep the quality to the highest possible standard, people would look past it and enjoy the game as I wanted to make it.

That assumption was wrong. Till today I get regular 1-star-reviews saying they can't play the game as long as the main character has purple skin. I went from a full on harem power fantasy with fast paced action and constant tension to a slow burn urban fantasy, mystery plot. This and other choices, very much alienated a lot of my old community and drove down engagement very hard.

From version 0.1 of CoM till today I've lost roughly 30% of my income. People have lost interest in my work to the point that it sometimes isn't even pirated anymore. Which is both kinda great and also kinda bad for me : D Long story short. Covenant of Morn is a financial grave. It's not doing well and even now, where so much work and polish has gone into it and things are really coming together, people don't care much about it.

THE LEARNINGS:

But dropping the game isn't really an option for me, not when I look at the other side. At what I learned from it. When I began making Covenant of Morn I was fucking unhappy. I was living in a flat-share with a roommate I didn't like, I had alotted about 99% of my being to being a Dev and did nothing else, while I didn't even like the work I was doing. Yes, I did nothing but work and I didn't like my work. I know that everyone enjoyed MIST and I'm very grateful for it, but working on that project made me miserable.

It made me feel small. I sometimes have these two voices in my head. One is a tiny little nerd guy that develops porn games from his dingy bedroom. The other is a selfmade artist and solo developer that makes erotic games. Back when I made MIST, the porn guy won very often. Almost every day I felt litte and kinda pervy. Like I couldn't proudly look people in the eyes and tell them what I do for a living, even though I should be fucking proud of what I'm doing. Today, the porn guy is almost gone.

The selfmade artist, the solo developer, is now my voice. When people ask me what I do for a living I grin at them and tell them everything they want to know. Now only 50% of me is a developer. The rest is enjoying his life. And in return, I'm also learning about making games.

I have improved as a developer. The graphics look much, much better than ever before. The sound has improved, the UI has improved, the animation has improved, even the code isn't as messy as it used to be, granted, it is still messy. The dungeons are more complex, the characters more diverse and above all, my writing is improving by leaps and bounds. CoM forces me to tackle so many difficult problems, that I'm learning things every single day. As a writer, I made the biggest jump. I can feel it. When I go to the drawing board and plan out future scenes and mysteries, I can tell how much things have changed. How much clearer and more focused I am, how much easier it is for me to grasp all the important threads and weave them together into a story. Where I was struggling and fighting before, I now feel calm and controlled. The only problem is, even with all these learnings, what does that mean for the future? What does that mean for Covenant of Morn?

THE CONCLUSIONS:

As I said, I'm not dropping Covenant of Morn. I never even considered it. Financially, this game is lost and I don't see that changing. But I don't really mind. No matter how much I earned, I never really raised my standard of living. I have a nice apartment now, but it's actually cheaper than the room in the flat-share. I built most of my furniture on my own and buy second hand wherever I can. I'd have to lose about 70% of my income before it becomes an issue. Losing money is annoying and scary at times, but this game is giving me back so much more than MIST ever did. As an artist and as a person, I've been learning a ton and have been doing better than ever before.

But for CoM that will also mean some changes. My editor (StrayHero) and I have been cooking up a few changes to the game that'll mix things up. I'm pretty certain you'll like what we're preparing for the next two chapters. I'm also setting myself a deadline for how long I want to keep developing CoM and will make changes to the planning accordingly, as I'm realizing that with the current pace the game will be in development for another 3-4 years and I'd rather have that be 2-3 years.

And I've also learned that I'm pretty proud of my work. I don't feel small and I don't feel like I need to prove myself anymore. With CoM I broke out of my mold and freed myself from making harem power fantasy games. With CoM I also realized that those games are fun and already know that for future projects I want to combine my two inner voices. In the future I want to make games that both the nerdy porn enjoyer and selfmade artist will enjoy. And I think when they end up joining forces, great things will happen. For the rest of developing CoM, I'll already try to get the two on the same page. It might take a while though.

I'm pretty excited about the future. No matter what happens next, I think I'll welcome it with open arms.

And for those who are wondering. Since the release of 0.4 I spent most of my time making some 3D Assets, building a new environment and first and foremost planning all the changes and plot for future versions. On saturday I'll be leaving on a vacation for a week. Afterwards development will be back in full swing! YOu'll hear from me again soon! Have a great week.

cant wait to see/play what you got in store for CoM ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Regardless of how other people feel about your work, I really liked MYST but I enjoy COM a lot more. I feel like the quality of your work is S tier.

Darkminou

was one of the first to join your patreon then, and if i had to take a break for finance reason, i intend to stay for long =) It's true, i enjoy less COM that i did Myst, but don't mean i don't like it either. It's different, but not unwelcome =)

Here's the thing. I found, played and loved MIST. I love harems, RPGs, and Souls-esque settings. That game had all of that and wrapped things up fairly nicely. Was it perfect? Oh, hell no. But, did that stop it from being good? Again, hell no. If anything, I could literally see the passion and dedication to ply your trade and hone your craft as a game dev, artist, and storyteller. It was inconsistent, but in a way that showed how far you'd come with each build acting like steps in the ladder so to speak. I dunno, I found it hard not to fall in love with what I saw and the world and characters you'd made. Props to Mia btw. I dunno, she just really clicked for me. Now, fast forward to CoM and its release. I dunno if other people make the connection to your aesthetic style, but it's pretty Souls like. Ican't really describe it very well, but the vibe is.... similar to FromSoft's worlds, but less nihilistic. Less... well, dark. See, your stories are about groups of people, real companions. Something that made journeying in those Souls-esque worlds more satisfying than slogging it out on my own. Now, the choice to be like, a 'Chosen Undead' was interesting, and I won't lie and say that being purple didn't surprise me, but neither will I say that it bugged me too much after I got used to it... I mean, we are kinda undead... I'll take being a little off color to being a Hollow, just saying. As for the game itself compared to MIST? It's a definitely step up in terms of technical artistic and mechanical quality, narrative focus, and overall presentation consistency. In short, It's an objective improvement. Now, having sad all that, and considering what you've said already, that doesn't mean that people will find it to be 'better'. Quite the opposite really. But, look at it this way. A lot of works that were considered trash were often vindicated by history later on. That's just how it is with art. I can't tell you the number of games that get shit on when they release only to be seen as classics later on. Now, I'm not saying that will be the case with CoM, but... this is only your third game and second major project. I think it's irresponsible and misguided to write off CoM just because it's not MIST take two. Now, as long as I get quality, lewds, quality lewds and a harem... then I am more than willing to enjoy a different take on how I get those elements. I mean, I'm playing a dungeon crawler x investigative clue hunting with a hot snake lay who reminds me of Mia but narkier and with glowy eyes of hotness. What the hell more could I want? Not only that, her latest date made me more curious about her. Honestly, the premise here shows how much more care you're putting in at making this 'our story' with this new mystery approach. Yeah, it's different from being the main driver of the plot like in MIST, but that's fine. As a storyteller, it's both important find your niche and improve on it while at the same time experimenting with different ways of telling those stories. If you take a hit, oh well. Like, ppl shit on Dark Souls 2 and Phantasy Star 3 all the time, but they aren't bad games in and of themselves. Just, different, and that's fine, bc those games not only led to their more successful sequels, but left their own mark in their respective subgenres all on their own, mistakes and all... I think it's too soon to call CoM a bad game and anyone who wrote it off before chapter 1 was even even finished is a short sighted idiot. I'm a fan of your work, but no stan for it. You do good work and it shows, hence earned my support and praise. I wouldn't support it if I didn't think you'd deliver a quality product in the end that I'll like as much as MIST. Again, as long as I get quality, lewds, quality lewds, and a harem out of it, I'm happy. Does that make me picky? Yeah, probably. My point is, you've still got plenty of fans who like what you're doing. And wile it's important to consider the market, you shouldn't let that be the thing that stops you from trying new things... Lord knows the mainstream gaming industry has become a cesspool of sameness because of that need to follow trends... Ugh. So, yeah. Just you do you and keep pumping out the good stuff and let the work be judged when it's done, not beforehand. Well, feedback to help improve aside ofc.

You have a unique style and it's plain as day that you put so much effort and love into what you do. Not just the game, but your progress reports aswell. I haven't supported you financially (I possibly did for a bit in the past, can't remember),.but I've kept up with the game very closely. I would happily support if I could, but I always read your progress reports and look forward to the future of the game. I think with MYST it was the setting and hooked people in and the atmosphere. CoM doesn't offer the same "vibe", but it's a much higher step in terms of characters and storytelling. I also think the whole zombie thing is just extremely hyped. This is coming from me as someone who has sunk time into both games and probably doesn't represent views of the majority. No matter what I wish you luck and hope your patreon grows as more people discover the game and give it a chance.

Riven

I was introduced to your game Mist first and really enjoyed it! I also really enjoyed CoM as well! No matter what you do, I'll always support you and try out your games!

Keronir

I played Mist as a full game and joined in CoM with patch 0.3 or so. Mist has a higher pace, yes. But CoM is such a great improvment even this early. Just because it plays diffrently doesn't mean it's bad. CoM is not Mist 2. As far as i get it, it's a new game with a diffrent approach and i like the new approach. The more detectiv like mysterie solving and that stuff. I'm looking forward to see more of the game. Keep the good work up and enjoy yourself in the process.

Black Hole Sun Studios

I chose to be a professional engineer instead of an artist, but as a lifelong study-er of art and especially music (but recently a lot of erotic art) this balance of making a living but also expressing what is engaging and fulfilling to you is extremely interesting to me. Ultimately, they say the largest sexual organ... is the brain. I know for me, a render of a hot situation is about 1/10th as enjoyable as that same rendy with super kinky context, which is the whole point of crafting games over just doing shorts. Anyway - I could ramble about this forever, but my two cents as a long time fan who is waiting to play CoM until it's finished but continues to support is I support because of the posts like this and your regular updates about status. I trust you as a dev and a professional artist, and I feel like my financial support is well spent both for my learning about your process as well as your development of games. Keep consistent with your work as it seems you have been, and long term I think you can only succeed if you keep learning from your community and world feedback and then balancing that with your artistic instincts and work ethic. Thanks for posting about your approach!

Gregory Cirtaus

Sorry to hear about the troubles, I hope it gets better. I haven't finished Mist yet, but I really enjoy it. Played a little of CoM and plan on playing the rest after I finish Mist. Have a good day and keep up the good work.

MuteButtonHero

I'm really enjoying the intrigue and the mysterious setting of CoM. But I'll admit my tastes may not be mainstream. For example, I know pregnancy and babies are an important part of harem fantasy but I think having a house full of pregnant women and then a house full of screaming babies sounds like a nightmare. I'll keep enjoying CoM as long as you continue to develop it. BTW, I don't care about the purple skin one way or another. OTOH, I have not see one person say they like it. It's either neutral like me or negative.

Manimal

My excuse for waiting to try the new updates is purely that I find small updates to break immersion. This game has a lot of soul. I am excited to see your vision, and am onboard for this game! I just started the new update and see some great polish to the beginning! The art is incredible. I will admit to having an initial bad impression about the blobs, I assumed they were place holders and then they got worked into the story. The polish definitely helped with that. This story is harsh and unnerving, but it is unique and interesting. the immersion is really great.

kerrigan cooper

This is amazing game, I'm surprised you've gotten this kind of pushback on it.

Newt

Resurrection by Erection - Powerwolf Is effectively a main plot thread of the game lmao

Zealot of Malice

Hey I want you to know I have ben reading since A Tale of Eden and frankly you have been continuing to improve as an artist in leaps and bounds. You knew when you had a shortcoming and kept pushing to move past it that is a strength few have you should be proud of all the work you have done and I think Covenant of Morn is an amazing game and idea I love the mystery sleuthing.

StrayHero

The RPGM game you're referring to is Once Ever After, by Sierra Lee. She's actually continued further down that path to build another porn game with a ton of depth, called The Last Sovereign. I'm a big fan of her work as well.

Deniz Schüssler

First of thank you. Even if im a little bit late i wanted to thank you for your great work you crafted. I must admit i never finished MIST. Even tho it was really well made and intriguing., it felt more porn then a good VN and reading you post I understand why. COM feels so much more mature. Both where fun to play but with COM you really topped yourself. I really like sex scenes in VNs, I mean that's one of the reasons I play them, but without great writing and pace it feels more like porn. COM is definitely slower then MIST but not in a bad way. Every interaction feels way more impactful. And so far (still in Chapter 1) the pace feels perfect. I'm looking forward to where COM is going. And as an solo Indie Dev myself I know how much work in every update lies. Sometimes I wished I could commit as much as you do. I truly believe that COM will get more attention and can be an example for industry.
