Harry Potter the Sorcerer Supreme - Chapter 9 - Nice Catch, Harry Potter (Patreon)

When Harry and Clint appeared on the roof of Stark Tower, the loud crack sound surprised the two current occupants who were huddled around a large mechanical device, seemingly built around a spinning, blue glowing cube, causing both of them to spin around and identify the source of the noise.
Harry did not recognize, the older Scandinavian looking man, but he smiled and waved when he recognized that it was Natasha standing next to him.
She had immediately recognized Clint, who had turned around once side-along apparating to the roof and had run towards some air conditioning units and was dry-heaving rather indiscreetly.
“Clint …? We lost you on comms when the Chitauri attacked the rooftop … how did you get up … “ She paused at seeing Harry. “Oh … well I guess that answers that …”
She paused to look Harry over, “After this is all done … I know some people who are going to have a whole lot of questions for you.”
Harry smiled at her, “I guess I am looking forward to it. What can I …” he paused, seeing that Hawkeye had straightened up, seeming to collect himself, and had moved to join him, “… I guess, what can we do to help?”
The older man looked curiously towards Harry before choosing to ignore him and focusing on Clint as he responded, “We need your help to protect us, well to protect the Black Widow from the Chitauri as she tries to close the portal. I built a back door that will allow her to use the scepter …” he paused and pointed at the scepter in Black Widow’s hands, before continuing, “… to close the portal.”
Harry smiled and let out an audible sigh of relief which caused everyone to look at him, “Ok, well now that’s the best news I’ve heard all day. I was worried we’d have to just keep fighting non-stop waves of enemies as they come through that portal. I guess if you at least have a way to cut off more reinforcements we have a chance … when I was Iron Man flying towards an approaching missile I was a little worried that the military was giving up on the city.”
Clint and Natasha shared a look of momentary panic between each other before she whispered loudly to herself. Harry recognized it as the same way Clint had done earlier and recognized she was likely talking into her team mic. “Tony what are you doing? What are you doing chasing a missile and where did it come from … just when were you going to share that bit of info with the rest of us?”
While she focused on his response, the older man turned to look at Harry and asked, “Just who are you? When I was with Loki, he didn’t have any information about you.”
Harry raised an eyebrow as he took an involuntary step backwards, looking suspiciously at the man, “You were working with Loki?!? Just who are you?”
The man shook his head, “Not willingly … it’s a long story but Loki was using me and I couldn’t do anything about it. I’m Dr. Selvig, I am an astrophysicist, and he needed my expertise to get his devise working.”
Harry relooked over the man staring suspiciously at him before reluctantly answering his question, “I’m Harry … and I guess that’s an equally long answer, but it doesn’t matter at the moment. What matters is that I’m here to …”
“A NUKE!!” Natasha yelled out, cutting off the rest of Harry’s response, ash Harry, Clint, and the older man all looked at her. “What do you mean you know where to put it …” she paused in midsentence as she looked up to the portal, “ … Oh my god … Tony … you can’t be serious, you don’t know what will happen if you go through the portal and you don’t know if you are even able to come back from that …”
The remainer of her sentence was drowned out by the loud sound of exhaust, which after a fraction of a second was revealed to be originating from the missile, which Iron Man appeared to be pushing from below, as it flew straight up one side of the Tower, less than a stone’s throw away from the edge of the building.
Harry watched with the others on the roof as Iron Man, guided the nuclear missile and aimed it right into the hole in the sky. From their vantage right below the hole, Harry could see a large ship, hundreds of whales, and thousands upon thousands of those smaller fliers.
As Iron Man and the missile disappeared into the hole he wordlessly looked back down to Natasha, who was starring up at the hole and watching silently.
All of a sudden, a faint sound of a muted explosion reached his ears, causing him to look upwards. Through the portal Harry saw the large ship, which had barely been visible amid the darkness of the background, lit up in the light of a quickly expanding mushroom cloud of light, which highlighted the fact that there were actually thousands of whales and probably tens of thousands of fliers.
Looking at the expanding mushroom cloud of radioactive material through the portal, Harry heard movement and looked down to see Natasha shaking her head as she walked towards the mechanical device, she had been near when he had first popped into existence on the roof of the building.
Seeing her lift the scepter, Harry risked a glance upwards but was still unable to see the figure of Iron Man above the city, coming through the portal, “Wait … what are you doing?” He asked as he took a step towards her.
He froze, feeling Clint’s hand on his shoulder. “We need to close the portal, kid. Don’t need anymore aliens coming through, much less anything worse, and eventually that radiologic debris might start falling into the city. Tony … he knew what he was doing … he knew that was likely a one-way trip …” he trailed off as there was a loud clicking sound, a sound that was immediately followed by the abrupt cessation of the blue sky-beam, indicating to everyone that Natasha had managed to shut off the machine.
Harry looked away from Clint and his eyes were drawn to the large portal in the sky and watched as the portal began quickly shrinking in size.
However, … just as the portal was closing, vanishing completely from sight, leaving an unmarred sky … Hawkeye, who apparently had the best eyesight, exclaimed loudly. “Holy shit … he’s through. Nat … Tony fell through just in time!”
Everyone refocused on the area where the portal had been moments before and after a second of squinting Harry smiled, seeing the familiar red and gold color of a figure tumbling through the air.
While part of Harry had not exactly been awed by his first meeting with the armored super hero, finding the man to be extremely condescending, he was willing to admit that the man had been risking his life all day to save the people of the city, up to and including flying directly into a whale to get an advantage in a fight, and decided that maybe his abrupt manner was due to the mental and emotional strain from the day … although Harry was pretty confident that he pegged Tony correctly.
His thoughts on Iron Man were interrupted by Natasha as she turned to Clint.
“Um … Clint … it doesn’t look like he’s slowing, and his descent is out of control …”
These words immediately killed the smiles on Clint’s and Harry’s faces which had been growing bigger every second since the nuke had been diverted into the portal.
Harry’s eyes shot back up and confirmed that the armored figure of Iron Man was definitely not slowing as it was tumbling through the air towards the ground, but rather picking up speed … as he watched he couldn’t help but think that this must have been how he had looked in his third year when he had been surprised by the dementors during the Quidditch Match with Hufflepuff and had fallen off hi broom … as that fleeting thought made its way through his mind he watched Iron Man continue to pick up speed knowing that the man would need to be slowed down slowly as an abrupt stop at the speed he was travelling would likely kill him, another memory was triggered. A memory of a conversation with Hermione after he had woken up in the Hospital Wing after the fall, a conversation about the spell that Professor Dumbledore had used to save him. A spell that he had learned shortly afterwards just in case any of his teammates had ever fallen off their brooms. A spell he had already used a couple times since he had arrived.
Knowing what needed to be done, he pushed past a surprised Clint and Natasha who were frozen in worry and fear and walked purposefully right to the edge of Stark Tower … or as he stood on the edge of the building, he idly noticed that based on the letters the building had lost during the fight it could simply be called the “A Tower”.
Taking a deep breath and centering himself he felt the flow of magic within himself, just as the red and gold figure that had become little more than a red and gold blur passed by and continued approaching the ground.
Focusing, Harry yelled out, “Arresto Momentum!” and released a deep breath seeing Iron Man’s descent beginning to slow.
The syllables were barely out of his mouth before he felt the three others that had been on the roof with them run up alongside him to see what he had done … and maybe see what had happened to Iron Man. They all reached the edge of the building just as Iron Man gently came to a stop on the pavement below.
As they watched, they saw three small figures all run to his side before Harry felt the eyes of the others shift to him.
“Ok kid … that’s got to be the best one yet …” Clint began.
Dr. Selvig was shaking his head in disbelief, “That is impossible. What you just did … there is no way that could have actually …” before trailing off, mumbling to himself.
Harry looked over to Natasha, who had not said anything and saw that she was just smiling as she mouth out, “Thank you.”
Harry returned the smile and nodded, before quickly glancing out over the edge, letting out a deep breath at the relative stillness of the city, realizing that there was no longer the sound or sight of the aliens flying around causing mayhem and destruction, and that either the closing of the portal or the explosion of the nuclear missile with the ship in space had somehow resulted in the end of the fight. Other than the hundreds of alarms that could be heard and the dozens upon dozens of fires he could see from his current vantage … the city almost seemed peaceful in comparison to the chaos of even ten minutes ago.
Turning back to Clint and Natasha, he asked, “So … is it finally over? I’ll admit that was quite the welcome to the city.”
Clint looked up towards Harry and laughed a somber laugh, “I think so … I sure hope so.”
Natasha’s face meanwhile immediately got serious as she looked to Harry, “Well … the battle is done. But we will need to find and apprehend Loki, otherwise there is no reason he can’t try to do something like this again. But beyond that, we need to …”
She paused, being interrupted by a loud roar from the Hulk which echoed up from the street-level below. This caused everyone on the roof, including Dr. Selvig who had begun to wander back to the machine, the one responsible for opening the portal in the sky, to rush back and look over the edge of the roof at the three figures still standing around Iron Man, who still appeared to be laying on the ground far below them.
“Umm … kid … he’s okay, right?” Clint asked hesitantly.
Harry tried to stare down and pick up details far below them, wondering for a second if he did see a little more movement, before looking back to Clint.
“As long as he was okay when he fell through the portal, what I did wouldn’t harm him. I only cushioned his fall so he didn’t become paste when he hit the ground … but I have no idea what exactly happened to him when he flew into the hole with the missile or when he returned … or even whatever happened to him when he was through the portal.
Natasha and Clint both looked worriedly over the side, his words obviously not soothing them.
Harry reached down and grabbed a piece of debris as he looked at them. “But if you want, I can get you down there so you can check on him.”
They both looked at him and nodded slowly, although Clint’s face was slightly pale as he mumbled, “Oh no not again.”
Harry looked at the rock, and quietly cast, “Portus” and then handed it to them.
With a smile he looked at the archer, “Don’t worry Clint, it’s a different form of transportation … although I would advise you to not let go …” He paused and continued, “… Just say ‘New York’ and this will take you down there … oh and good luck with the landing.”
As Harry took a step back, smiling at the concerned look on Clint’s face, he overheard Natasha say ‘New York’ and watched them vanish from the rooftop.
Harry and a very surprised looking astrophysicist, looked over the edge and watched them spin into existence about fifteen paces from the other heroes down below, surprising them.
Harry laughed seeing Clint fall to his knees, although he smiled, impressed that Natasha had managed to land on her feet and was already running towards the form of Iron Man as Clint was getting to his feet.
Turning around, Harry was met by the surprised expression of Dr. Selvig, who was staring at him.
“Sorry about that, Doctor. Do you want to go down as well?” Harry asked leaning down to grab another piece of rubble.
The man looked at the piece of rubble in Harry’s hand warily before looking up into his eyes, “It’s alright … I should probably make sure the machine is stable … the last thing we want is for the portal to accidentally reopen … or for there to be a vast energy discharge which levels the city …”
He paused and looked to Harry, “What about you? Don’t you want to go down and celebrate with the other heroes?”
Harry shook his head, “I’m not really a hero.”
Dr. Selvig raised an eyebrow, “Well sure seems like you were helping them and I don’t know what you would define as a hero but helping the city in the time of need … seems pretty heroic to me.”
Harry looked up from the ground and back to the astrophysicist, “Well … I was just trying to do what I could. But at the very least I am not a member of their team …” he paused, looking down thoughtfully at the six individuals below, “… at least not yet. Besides, Natasha mentioned finding Loki … and I think I have an idea as to where he is …”
This caused Dr. Selvig to pale slightly as he looked around.
Harry shook his head, “Do not worry, Doctor. I’ll go find him; you worry about the machine.”
Seeing the astrophysicists nod, Harry turned and headed to the other side of the roof where he had seen stairs leading below, happy to be able to walk again rather than having to apparate, feeling the exhaustion from all the magic use was starting to catch up with him.
As Harry started climbing down the stairs, he was able to see through the giant glass windows into what he supposed was the penthouse and saw that as expected there was a figure within, a figure Harry was pretty confident was Loki.
Finally reaching a glass door that led into the large room, Harry entered and confirmed that the man inside was indeed the same man he had seen flying by earlier, although he was currently missing his ostentatious crown and was laying in a small crater on the floor.
As Harry approached the crater in the concrete, he saw the man notice his approach, a look of surprise on his face as he looked around. After seeing that no one else was in the room Harry watched as his appearance briefly and faintly shimmered before abruptly solidifying, leaving a disappointed look on his face.
The man then began to sit up, slowly and painfully. “Ah … I don’t believe we’ve met. I’m Loki … I half expected that dysfunctional team of do-gooders to be here. I suppose it is too much to hope that the battle was a success, and they are no longer a thorn in my side?”
Harry shook his head, “Sorry … Loki, the attack failed. The clean up might take some time but it looks like all the attacking aliens are down. As for the superheroes, it looks like they will all be okay.”
The man on the ground looked up at Harry, “Well … I guess you win some and lose some … I was promised a drink, would it be too much to ask for that drink. I feel I would be a sore loser if I was not able to toast to your success … Mr …”
After trailing off, Harry saw Loki’s visage shimmer again, but this time it lasted a little longer before smoothly settling, although this time before the shimmer disappeared Harry was confident, he saw Loki’s image double for a second. After the shimmer had fully disappeared and the apparent double had faded, Loki looked up at Harry with a suspicious smile on his face, which Harry found a little disconcerting.
Quietly whispering, “Petrificuls Totalus,” under his breath, Harry stared in shock as Loki kept moving, readjusting his position until he was sitting upright.
“Well ok … no names, very mysterious by the way. So what is your plan? Going to keep talking to me and try to prevent me from leaving before the big guns get here.”
Harry kept looking at the figure of Loki, concerned that the individual in front of him seemed to be immune to his magic. Although as he thought about it, he couldn’t help but think that the spell had actually appeared to travel through the man rather than hit him and simply be ineffective … sort of like when a spell had accidentally been cast at a ghost in Hogwarts, like they weren’t even there.
Harry froze staring hard at the figure in front of him realizing that it might be nothing more than an illusion.
Whispering another spell, “Inimicum Revelio,” a spell that Hermione had developed while they had been on the hunt for Horcruxes, a spell that had been born out of desperation when she determined that Homenum Revelio didn’t always work against non-humans. As a result she had come up with Inimicum Revelio which would reveal nearby enemies but only if they were actively planning something against the caster or were about to attack.
As Harry was unsure as to whether Loki was actually human, even though he certainly appeared more human than the Chitauri had, he decided it would be safer than Homenum Revelio, even though it had it’s drawbacks.
Immediately after he had cast the spell, he was rewarded for his choice as he felt the presence of someone right behind him.
With reflexes that were part genetic, and part born out of necessity from growing up with the Dursley’s Harry immediately jumped to the side as he began spinning around.
Harry watched as Loki seemingly appeared from nowhere, swinging a knife through the space Harry had been occupying moments before, his eyes adjusting towards where Harry was currently standing, a look of surprise etched on Loki’s face.
Without opening his mouth, Harry cast a silent, Levicorpus, smiling at both the sight of the spell actually colliding with Loki’s body and the actual effects of the spell as he was knocked over and hoisted in the air by his ankle.
“What …? How did you …? Even my own brother is not able to realize when I’m not there. Put me down this instance you dull creature, I will not be …”
Shaking his head, Harry cast, Silencio, laughing to himself when he finally noticed Loki becoming aware he was no longer making sounds, and the violent shaking and what Harry assumed to be vulgar gestures that arose from that realization.
“Sorry Loki … but don’t really need anyone else trying to kill me today, had enough of that earlier. I just wanted to pop by here and make sure you hadn’t disappeared before the Hulk managed to lead the rest of his team back up here to deal with you. I’m pretty sure there are going to be a bunch of questions they’d like to ask you.”
Harry watched, smiling only a little bit as the man’s face paled at the mention of the Hulk.
“But you are for them to deal with, I’m going to see who I can help and maybe try to get a start on fixing this mess you created.” Harry said angrily as he stared out the window at the city of New York.
Looking back to Loki he called out, “Stupify,” smiling at the look of shock on Loki’s face which disappeared as the man fell into unconsciousness. Confident that the spell had indeed had its intended effect, Harry cast the counter jinxes to the dangling and silencing spells before casting Incarcerous and watching as the ropes and gag came out of no where before binding Loki in place.
Looking down on Loki, he paused and smiled to himself before transfiguring the rope into an extra strong Christmas ribbon, complete with a bow. After transfiguring a drink glass from the bar into a card, which he charmed to act as a Howler, he placed the card into the ribbon right below Loki’s head, Harry smiled and walked out of the penthouse and towards the edge of the elevated balcony, laughing to himself. Looking out over the city he lost the laugh as the gravity of the damage started to weigh on him causing him to mumble to himself, “Well … it looks like there is some serious work to do, better get to it.”
And with that Harry apparated off the balcony into the city below.
HP --- Marvel --- HP --- Marvel --- HP --- Marvel --- HP --- Marvel --- HP
Less than fifteen minutes later the Avengers stood around the gift-wrapped body of Loki, staring at the previously vocal and animated letter which had just fallen silent, falling back on top of the bound individual, the last words echoing through the room.
“… My name is Harry Potter, I am the Master of Death and I am here to help.”
Everyone stared at the letter, watching as it silently burst into fire, before Natasha let out a brief laugh staring around the circle, her gaze finally coming to rest on Tony. “Say what you want about your meeting with him earlier. You may not like him, Tony, but even you can’t deny: Harry Potter’s got style.”

All feedback is welcome (hopefully constructive!) Looking forward to hearing what you think!
Story Note – While I am not entirely sure as to how Loki’s illusion ability works, although it is good enough to fool Thor, including managing to do it right in front of his eyes while he was in the containment unit on the Shield Carrier. I always wondered why he never used it at the end of the Battle of New York. But I assumed that he was too tired to do it convincingly (hence why Harry saw a brief flicker) and might have been worried that Stark’s tech could see through it. So that is why he was willing to give it a try since there was only Harry (an unknown) looking at him. But while he could mostly fool Harry’s eyes, he could not fool the magic.
Disclaimer – It has come to my attention recently that I unfortunately do not own any part of Harry Potter or the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the characters that belong to those entities. One can dream I suppose. Although I did buy a ticket to Disney World one time.
