Russian here. Every member of the cast that speaks Russian is a native speaker, apart from Connor, who speaks with a mild accent and Sasha’s actor, who speaks with a very heavy accent. No shade to the actor, but it was a struggle to understand him 😅

Rsbl

The club scène is just so good, Ilya spotted Miles and he knows he is Rose friend and realized that Shane and Rose have to be there…goosebumps with the song choice too. Same for Shane, he recognized Ilya teamates.

Rsbl

Also, for me, I think the whole Miles pressing up and grinding and almost kissing Shane is not really happening like that and it's partially all in Shane's head (a metaphor for his inner conflict with his sexuality). I already think the lighting and music change at that point is all in Shane's head. Rose is not reacting to Shane just staring across the room for several beats. Miles also kisses Shane at the same time Rose does, it suggests Shane's feeling crowded in during the kiss and caught between Rose and his attraction to men.

dani

Thanks for this, really love your reactions! can’t wait for ep 5, (it’s my favorite episode) lol

Beck Huston

Enjoying your reactions to this show. I am not sure if you caught on to what set Shane off during the frotting scene. Ilya called him Shane and then Shane said Ilya. They had always used last names up until that point. I think the point of the last scene was that Ilya had to think of Shane in the shower and Shane had to think of Ilya with Rose in order for both of them to climax.

Mark100

Congratulations, you made it through the boring part. 😎😎 And don't worry, probably 99% of us also initially assumed the hot bartender was hitting on Shane.

Vicki Lewis

Great reaction Dylan! I absolutely loved the episode at Ilya’s house, he’s just trying to ask Shane about girls etc as he has insecurities about their feelings towards each other. Also them calling each other by their firsts names when they had the intimate scene on sofa scared Shane as feelings had become more apparent. I’m excited for the next two episodes :)

Michele Willard

OMG I’m so excited that you are doing interview with the vampire, I absolutely love that show, probably even more than heated rivalry and I didn’t think that was possible 😂

Michelle West

I never thought of it like that before, makes a lot of sense.

Rsbl

Boring? That’s one of my fav episode lol😭😅

Dennis A

Cinema! 🔥🏒💞🏳️‍🌈

Michelle West

Firstly I wanted to say I loved your new lighting. So the actress who plays Svetlana is a native Russian speaker. Although she was born in Canada her mother is Russian/Ukrainian and her father is from Trinidad and she spent a lot of her time as a child living in Russia. She is also unbelievably gorgeous ❤️. Personally I think the whole shower scene at the end is just Shane's imagination and thinking of Ilya is the only way he can perform with Rose. Earlier when Ilya is staring angrily into the bathroom mirror in his hotel room you can see the hotel shower in the reflection which has a rail for a shower curtain and not the glass screens in the shower at the end. It actually looks a lot like the shower both Shane and Ilya are in during the earlier montage. I could be wrong, maybe Ilya got his own hotel room so his teammates don't realise he went home alone or something else but I like to think that Shane is so obsessed with Ilya that he has this whole shower fantasy going on. I can't wait for you to see the next two episodes, they are so good.

splendidvie

You seemed kinda distracted this episode, compared to your previous reactions. Missed a bunch of important plot lines. Still liked your reaction though. Looking forward to your reaction for ep. 5 & 6. Since you asked, i don't love the super red lighting in your room.

Joshua Rodman

For real. Ksenia Daniela Kharlamova makes me feel a little bit bisexual.

Joshua Rodman

I think the bartender might be being flirty but assuming its falling on deaf ears. But there's definitely some Shane point of view being implied there.

Arctic Goddess

Thanks Dylan, I had a feeling you might drop this today. I loved the scene between S and I on the couch too. It's the first time in 6 years of hookups that they actually just talked like people. 😲 Ilya flipped the script though. First he told Shane that he was sleeping with a girl, and might find another, then he confused things more by saying Shane's first name during sex. In his sloppy way, he was trying to tell Shane he was bi, the problem is that Shane hasn't reckoned with that part of himself, and because he's on the spectrum, the change in routine threw him into a panic. He has all this pressure with his best friend and parents bringing up girls that when a celebrity he admires is kind to him and makes him feel important and interesting he goes for it. The club scene is emotional and toxic, but if you rewatch it, it is mastery in cinematography, camera work down to the 'bisexual' lighting the set designer confirmed. The black friend is meant to symbolize the gay side of Shane that's always just behind him, and the 'All the Things She Said' song bleeding in the Harrison remix with the man's voice is mesmerizing. I have seen directors, filmmakers, camerapeople waxing poetic on the slow motion shots and cuts in this scene, and it will be winning this show awards. Speaking of which, Heated Rivalry just won a prestigious Peabody award. It's the 'Pulitzer prize' for TV, it has to be chosen unanimously by 28 academics and media heads from around the world. The Pitt also won, and Severance won a few years ago. I cannot wait to see your reaction to 5 or 6m, and I hope it's not too long a wait-Interview with a Vampire will be sick! 💗

Joshua Rodman

The cup Ilya is referencing with the dirty flirty take off the cup with his mouth is a plastic cover for your junk worn in several contact sports. Without it you could fairly easily get significant damage. They also unsurprisingly get very funky, so Ilya is being a freak like usual. My read on Svetlana bringing up Sasha is as a little jokey jab at Ilya for not opening up, but who knows. The fan base will tell you there's a clear reason Shane pulls away after tuna melts, but its pretty ambiguous. Might be worth watching again and coming to your own conclusions. Don't know if it's worth the effort, but digital cameras in low light will always produce a large amount of digital noise. There are many tools that can get rid of this fairly effectively. I use handbrake, but something you already use may have a simple checkbox or step for it.

Arctic Goddess

Me too, and I'm not often attracted to girls. She's stunning and so sweet. (it happens though. I have a longtime crush on Jennifer Connelly. 🤭

Arctic Goddess

Boring? How? And 100% of us thought he was going home with hot bartender Mr Rose 🌹 😆

V

Your are so spot on!! .... and why Miles repeats the phrase 'sweaty blur', perfectly placed— between Shane being asked to dance and Miles revealing his own longing for one. It’s such a sharp metaphor for, as you say, Shane’s inner conflict. And a visceral one for his blurred boundaries and the disorienting tension of the moment. It's Jacob's total masterclass in character work!

V

Yeah, can't agree with boring, keep watching it, it's so loaded and such a great foundation to ep's 5 & 6!

V

Great reaction, really like the subtleties - it added so much. ... and when you lowered the lighting just that bit - that's when it clicked!

SirMatelot

Thanks for this reaction! Episode 4 is sort of an acquired taste. I didn't like it on first viewing, but it is an important development of the story. The chaotic dance scene with Shane between Rose and Miles is a metaphor for the turmoil and conflict in Shane's mind. Viewing more than once (re-heating) enhances appreciation of this powerful episode.

Ian Mossner

You should react to Overcompensating and Adults. They are both lgbt comedies and could help balance with lgbt dramas.

Bob Rogers

also love the couch scene

3r7s

interesting take on their dynamic in the sofa scene.. it didn't occur to me to equate it that much with neurodivergent panic, but it probably plays into it some, now that you mention.. i've seen people have a hard time interpreting those scenes.. including the mechanics of what's actually going on in the sequence where Ilya spits in Shane's palm.. 😅 as i thought of it.. all those years is Shane longing for more substance in their relationship. well, love, basically. but fantasy is one thing. now that Ilya starts letting his walls down, and with the intimacy of that moment when they don't even know how and switch to first names.. it's becoming too real all of a sudden, and all the real life implications of that are crashing down on Shane..

3r7s

yeah, she's a pro russian.. 😅

maggie6122

loved your reaction to this Dylan! The cinematography of the club scene is one of my favorite moments, it’s just so well done. I can’t wait for the last 2 eps!! (Also the new mic sounds great!)

3r7s

was at work yesterday and thought of you several times filming this episode.. btw, so good you're doing 'Interview with a Vampire' next. seen like half of SE1 back when it came out.. i need to rewatch and catch up before SE3 releases, so it's good incentive to finally do so. ✌️ have you seen the old movie or read the novel?

ColinW

The question of the club scene being mostly real but partly "in Shane's head" is fascinating. I think clearly some of it didn't happen as shown. At the end when both Shane and Ilya are standing completely still locked in staring at each other clearly didn't happen: Ilya wanted Shane to feel some of the same pain he is so yes he'd be all over that woman not standing still. Given it is placed close to the artifice of Ilya and Shane "breaking the 4th wall" by staring at us, I think it's pure fantasy (and likely what each of them is imagining as they come, the quick edit of their faces at the very end suggesting they are of one mind in that moment). But where that line between fantasy (or hindsight) versus fact lies in the full scene is hard to find. Maybe where the original song brilliantly transitions to the cover but that seems too early. I think in fact Shane excuses himself and goes to the bathroom. He probably pauses for a second or two and he and Ilya lock eyes briefly but I think in hindsight it is like a car accident: a few seconds seems to have been much longer. Basically: the scene isn't 100% accurate with the stood-still staring being unbelievable; so I'll forever be wondering where the line is.

WILLIAM jewelry

Lighting I recommend if a LED bluelight (any check one will do) on the floor washing up the wall behind you. It will REALLY bring out your eyes and create nice contrast with your hair coloring. That is what almost every TV set designer would tell you. Also a small accent light on the wall (that you can see - like those LED objects / designs which people get on tik tok or anywhere really home depot etc.) should be over your shoulder to give you a little backlighting to better silhouette you. Much love!

Ivan Velez

Oh sweetie, you’re going to cry so much in the next two episodes… and love it 😊 Couple of things: ilia saying the only cup Shane is going to get is the one Ilia peels off him is a sexual reference to the athletic cup (high impact plastic protector) that athletes use to protect their penis 😉😜 Number two … the thing that freaks out Shane in the couch is the use of their first names, prior to that they have kept each other at arms length just having sex… now Ilia is trying for a new level of intimacy and neurodivergent Shanes brain can’t handle it which triggers his fight or flight and leads him to end up with Rose in bed trying to convince himself he is straight. Is a classic and very sad response of trying to conform in a fucked up world.

Ivan Velez

This entire show is a Masterpiece

WILLIAM jewelry

The author chose TUNA MELT as the grossest and smellist thing on purpose. She tought what could be worse than kiss someone with Tuna Breath.

Chelsey

The reason Shane freaked out is because the whole interaction at Ilya’s house was new. Shane said he should go after they first had sex but for the first time ever Ilya asked him to stay but you can tell based on the contents of Ilya’s fridge that he’d planned to ask Shane to stay. He had ginger ale, which he doesn’t drink but knows Shane does and he already got the food for the tuna melt pre prepped and had enough for two people. You can see on Shane’s face that he’s confused about the food as they’ve never eaten together before. The casual conversation on the couch was also new for them. Also, in regard to the conversation on the couch, Ilya was trying to figure out Shane’s sexuality and who/if he was sleeping with besides Ilya, it’s why he was opening up about his sexuality, he was letting Shane know that he’s bisexual whilst also letting him know of the other people he was sleeping with but also pointed out that she’s ’too busy’ now etc. because Ilya’s fist language isn’t English it was intentionally confusing for us and Shane. Now back to the freak out…adding all that together and with how intimate and boyfriendy the couch sex scene was AS WELL as them both using first names for the first time ever, Shane panicked…he was literally getting everything he wanted but thought he’d never get, so he got out of there. Ilya has been in love with Shane for years (and vice versa) but due to Ilya’s family and being from Russia, he thinks he can never actually be with Shane so has pushed him away and had been quite cold with him but he took some massive swings this episode, preparing for Shane to stay and then asking him to, talking and opening up, actively trying to get to know Shane etc, so Shane leaving is a massive blow, especially when you consider that his family don’t love or want him either.

Ivan Velez

I dońt see this episode as boring, I see it as incredibly sad comment on our fucked up world. 😢

Maria

You’re not the first reactor I’ve seen say that it’s weird for Hayden to say Jacki’s friend is hot. Personally I don’t find it weird. I’ve been married almost 20 years and my spouse and I both call our friends hot 😂

Steph

This episode will never not feel like a gut punch. Also I genuinely cannot wait to see you watch the HudCon interviews

Joshua Rodman

Some autistic commentators have said Shane's retreat makes perfect sense to them, since Ilya has changed too many things all at once. Shane is high functioning and able to mask but still probably relies on some sense of rules and order.

DFROMDAQ

You’re such a horn dog your reactions are priceless

WILLIAM jewelry

I love that some people have brought up an interesting discussion about the GINGER ALE in other reactions. Shane is good, innocent and pure and does not drink except for ginger ale. Not water, the healthy choice, but a "spicier water" ginger ale - and it has the added benefit of being associated with Canada. Every time he asks for it, he is denied it, the only person who actual serves it to Shane is his teammate's wife (the one with all the kids) and Ilya. Ilya special buys it for Shane when he comes to his home for the first time and he makes sure it is cold. In the restaurant (with his parents) he asks for it and they say they only have sparkling water. Much like his parents telling him he needs to go to Wimbledon even if he does really want that. The bar after party with the flirty bartender he says he has it when Shane asks but says he doesn't really want that (projection from the bartender who like him) but a general denial. So he is forced to drink what MEN drink, beer. This sets him up to meet Rose, a woman. This all comes back later in Episode 6, too when Shane offers Ilya a drink. The author is amazing with all this stuff.

Catherine Strachan

Shane freaked out after they both used each other's first names for the first time. He's terrified of giving all of himself to Ilya when Ilya sees other people but I think Ilya is also feeling a lot more for Shane too and not showing it very well. I couldn't do what they're doing. I'm demi so I need the emotional connection before I even consider a physical one. I'm so happy you're reacting to Interview With The Vampire soon. It's one I've not seen yet so I'll enjoy watching it with you. Much love ❤️

Adavan

Another great reaction!! Fabulous! 😊 This episode is a bit tough to understand on first watch; it can feel a little bit off kilter. That's on purpose, I think. Because the boys are off kilter. Their simple hook-up situationship has started to mean so much more to them both - much more than they ever wanted it to mean. We can see that in the opening monologue - both of them becoming more and more distracted by their phones, waiting for texts from each other, constantly checking the schedule excitedly to see when they're playing each other next, Ilya losing interest in the party scene, and random women, Shane being distracted while working, (on the last commercial) something he's never done before. We can also see the growth in closeness and intimacy between them by the progression of sex scenes in this episode. Again even within the monologue, we go from bent over a couch, to a BJ in a hotel shower, to them actually clutching at each other and pulling clothes off, while kissing each other without stopping as they try to eagerly get up the stairs to Shane's bedroom. Then later in the episode we see the "cowboy Shane" scene 😁 which certainly seems intense and intimate, and then finally, the frotting scene which is incredibly intimate and yes, has them using their first names with each other for the first time. The first name thing is very important, but for Shane is just the last proverbial last straw. After the (well-intentioned) pressure from Hayden and the realization that Hayden also knows about "Lily", then combine that with Ilya asking him to stay the night and spend the day together. Then Ilya is making him food and has ginger ale on hand for him. The simple fact that Ilya KNOWS that ginger ale is his go to drink. (Notice Shane couldn't get ginger ale anywhere else throughout the episode - symbolically showing that Ilya has what Shane actually wants, and is the only one to provide it willingly and without judgment.) But all of that just culminated in the incredible intimacy between them on the couch and then Ilya calling him Shane, and him being almost UNABLE to stop himself from calling him Ilya back. It was a step too far for Shane's sweet, scared mind. When Ilya was talking about Svetlana, and the whole conversation on the couch, I think it was his way of telling Shane that he was bisexual and trying to ferret out Shane's sexuality and whether he was also sleeping with other people. It was also Ilya telling Shane that he'd had another friends with benefits situation, but it wasn't happening anymore and he was "too lazy" to try and find a new woman for that. He was trying to tell Shane that he was only interested in him now. But because of how Ilya grew up (in his family AND in Russia) his language is always coded, as protection, so he can always pull back any admissions or vulnerabilities if he needs to. Meanwhile Shane, of course, struggles with just basic social cues and language, never mind, double coded Russian spy language! 😭🙈 Our babies need an interpreter! Again, we have to remember that neither of them believes, for good reasons, that they have any kind of future. However, their feelings for each other are becoming harder and harder to deny or ignore which is why I think Ilya made the attempt, trying to see if there was any interest on Shane's part. My two favourite moments (today anyway) in this episode are, first, when Ilya holds his hand out to Shane as he's trying to leave and just says, "Hollander" and then repeats, "Hollander" again. It's like he's trying to say, "See, I can go back to Hollander and Rosanov. The first names are no big deal, don't leave." 😭 His hand still reached out to him while Shane walks out the door - the look on his face is so heartbreaking.😭 Then, my second favourite moment is in the club scene when the lyrics of All the Things She Said are, "I keep closing my eyes, but I can't block you out." while Shane is making out with Rose with his eyes closed. 🙈 This episode definitely demands a rewatch especially after you've finished the show. It gets even better with knowledge and understanding of the characters and where they're at. Anyway, loved this reaction as always. Congrats on the new microphone! It sounds great! 😊 I think I preferred the white lighting of previous reactions, but it's really more important that you do what YOU prefer. So, either way is good. ❤️ I can not WAIT for your reactions to the last two episodes!! 🙌🏻

emerraldx

breakfast with Dylan, was gonna try to wait until after work but turns out I won’t make it so just gonna have to be late 😘 excited to hear you are going back to season 1 of Interview with a Vampire too 🥰

Bradley Weeks

First, I'm super excited about you reacting to "Interview with the Vampire". I plan to stick around for that. Second, The next two episodes are my favorites of this season and are the reason this has become one of my favorite shows of all time. I truly hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

katyggls

I don't think you were totally off base on your initial read of the bartender being flirty with Shane. I think he was, and I also think Shane was even showing some interest back, but because the bartender assumed Shane was straight, he brought up Rose Landry and the moment between them was broken. It was like he reminded Shane of what he's "supposed" to be; a straight hockey player who's interested in girls, just as Ilya did by bringing up women in their conversation. Hopefully that guy never knows that if he'd just never brought Rose up, he could have gotten so lucky. 😉

3r7s

the acting in this show! i'm totally in love with their performances.. once you form a mental picture of Ilya and the background he's coming from and why he has reasons to be the way he is, it's all the more touching.. like in the end of Ep1, when Shane is misinterpreting his sulking on the terrace, and when Ilya says he's going back home soon - clueless Shane with his pampered family background replying "must be nice".. the pained venomous look Connor Storrie shoots at him! 🙈😅 and that's the first scene where Shane walks out on Ilya and he's left alone, calling "Hollander" after him.. which ties in with the scene of Shane walking out on him in this episode, and the hurt look on his face saying something like *Hollander, seriously? now?* i mean.. no words..

DFROMDAQ

I would have loved to seen that interaction the bartender is a hottie

3r7s

love your take on this.. 👍

Adavan

Agreed!! Like, I know Shane is working through a lot too, of course, so I understand why he is the way he is too and I don't "blame " him. But it's still just so painful to see Ilya let his guard down, let Shane in a bit, just for Shane to walk out and start dating the most famous woman he can find in the MOST public relationship. (Again , I know it's not intentional on Shane's part, he's just confused.) I've seen so many people hate on Ilya in this episode, and I just can not understand it. Like, he is the one being walked out on after trying for more. I've seen other reactors celebrating his heartbreak, and saying, "That's what he gets." and "Now he knows how Shane feels when he was sleeping with other women." But there's such a huge difference between Ilya's discreet, one night stands with various women while he and Shane had no expectation of exclusivity, and Shane walking away from Ilya as they are getting closer, only to begin an extremely public, exclusive relationship with Rose. It is NOT the same. Yes, Connor and Hudson are both INCREDIBLE actors! We got so lucky with them. ❤️

David Wayne Fox

Had to join you here for these last three episodes, Dylan. Like I told you already this old Texas boy was touched deeply by this show and it brought back a lot of my own memories, especially the last episode. This is an interesting intermediary episode and when Rose was introduced initially, I rolled my eyes and thought Oh no, we're going to have another obstacle to our main love story. But then after just a few minutes I fell in love with Rose and like you I was grateful that Shane actually had somebody to talk to like a human being. As I rewatch these episodes I find myself getting much more teary-eyed at the difficulty in communication and the hurt that's going on between the two guys. Really looking forward to the next two chapters with you!

Mark100

Did you not see the emojis? I was being facetious, to point out that the next 2 episodes make these first 4 look ordinary.

Mitch Nawojczyk

5 & 6 are also very good. HURRY up and react to them... That's all I'll say. I sure am enjoying your journey as a creator. Don't feel bad about charging for Patreon...you deserve something for your hard work! Keep it up Dyl-boy.

MavenCree

The whole time at Ilya's home was was Ilya trying to build a bridge to Shane emotionally and intimately. It was weirding Shane out, but Ilya saying his name FOR THE FIRST TIME, seriously freaked him the frack out. That's why he ran.

David Wayne Fox

That's kind of the way I saw it too. I saw it as a quasi dream sequence right after the point the song changes.

MavenCree

I've said it before, I'll say it again, everytime... THE AUDACITY of that last shot. Jacob Tierney, how dear you, sir?!

MavenCree

I was LITERALLY planning on leaving a comment asking if you'd seen Interview with the Vampire, when you mentioned it at the beginning. Until Heated Rivalry came along, IWTV was the best writing and adaptation I've seen in a show for YEARS. still a razor thin 2nd place though.

MavenCree

A warning, not a spoiler. Maybe have some tissues on hand for Episode 5.

james

Love your reviews as always! As a fellow Shane fan I also noticed your reaction to key scenes. Same for me.

gothamnightlights

Thank you for being here! I hope you are doing well and much love to you always 🙏🏻💙

Vicki!! So happy to see you here :) Such an intimate episode and I absolutely loved it. And I love you!!! I hope you’re doing well 🙏🏻💙

gothamnightlights

I’m excited, it’s been heavily requested and I’ve heard nothing but absolutely great things!! Thank you for being here and I hope you and your loved ones are doing well 🙏🏻💙

gothamnightlights

Dennis!!!! Much love to you always 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Tuna melt and ginger ale 🫡💙

gothamnightlights

Thank you for the feedback, I really do appreciate it :) And I appreciate you being here 🙏🏻 Much love to you always 💙💙

gothamnightlights

Thank you so much for this 🙏🏻 The fact it won a Peabody is insane but truly deserved!! As for the Miles scene I definitely picked up on him being sandwiched in between rose and Miles as I was editing! That’s one of the many beauties of this show - the many things you miss but pick up on subsequent watches! Much love 🙏🏻💙

gothamnightlights

I’m definitely looking forward to sitting down and watching S1 all the way through after finishing episode 6 🙏🏻 That is going to be very, very fun for me! As for the audio, thank you for letting me know! I had absolutely no idea it could have or magnify that effect for the audio so I appreciate it :) Much love to you always 🙏🏻💙

gothamnightlights

I’m happy to see you again!!!! Much love always!! 💙💙💙💙

Israel

Yes! I saw that as symbolism too. There’s a reactor named AlexChris who caught that symbolism right away. But ugh I love this sequence so much. The music. The acting. The cinema!!!

gothamnightlights

Thank you!!! The lighting is so fun for me but I also don’t want it to be overbearing for the viewer, so thank you 🙏🏻 And always, always sending much love to you! I hope you’ve been doing well 💙💙💙💙

gothamnightlights

I definitely picked up on Shane, Rose and Miles dancing together while editing! So cool to find little things like that after missing it on a first watch :) So good to see you here, and much love to you always 🙏🏻💙

gothamnightlights

Thank you 🙏🏻 I will definitely check these out!! Much love 💙💙

gothamnightlights

Maggie, it’s always a joy to see you :) I hope you and your loved ones are doing well and that post college life is everything you wanted it to be! 🙏🏻💙

gothamnightlights

I have not! My mom loves Anne Rice though and has read a lot of her books. So I think this will be fun for her too, which I’m very excited for :) So blessed to have you here, truly. I’m extremely grateful for you always. Much, much love 💙💙

Alan Mitchell

Another great reaction Dylan! Your take on the couch scene in Ilya's house is right on point. I love having hot sex with hot men, but those intimate moments when you're with someone in the moment, in the limerence of new love revealing itself, speaks to the desire of truly being at home with someone. By the way...so excited about you going to Interview With a Vampire next.

Dennis A

Yep! I told you they had $2 Canadian, a tuna melt, a ginger ale, 36 days and a dream. I have watched the club scene from Ilya's entrance until the end about a million times. It's like a music video, so full of symbolism and metaphor. You will learn thru reheats that every single frame of this show is intentional and Jacob Tierney is a genius. I just finished my second ever dark gay romance in another attempt to appease my Heated Rivalry psychosis. It's so hard to pick one to read because there are about a million of them. The next episode is an all time banger. I can't wait. Thank you! 🙏 PS: Another one to add to your YouTube reaction/review list is "Gaywatch." Brittany is hilarious and insightful. I loved her Heated Rivalry Mental Health Breaks. 😂

Dennis A

I'm very gay but Ksenia is sexy and absolutely gorgeous. All the women in this show are beautiful and strong positive characters for our boys. For those who can't place her, Sophie Nélisse(Rose) played young Shauna in "YellowJackets."

Timothy Alberts

This is the most difficult episode for me to watch...heartbreaking. I will definitely watch Interview with you. I have put it off because I think Anne and Christopher Rice pulled out of the project after being on board. I love almost all of Anne's books and many of Christopher's as well, and I actually got to meet them, so I feel a kind of loyalty to them. Gird your loins for episode 5!

Zachary D

Love you, Dylan. Please do a video reaction of the interviews too after finishing the season. <3

gothamnightlights

I agree, I love this take as well!!!! :) Thank you for taking the time to watch and to leave such a breathtaking comment

gothamnightlights

Wow thank you for this, I absolutely love these ideas!!!!!!!! Much love to you always!!

gothamnightlights

Thank you so much for informing me on that! I'm so excited to rewatch this series and to pick up on the little things I've missed, but some I would never have guessed if it wasn't for y'all :) I'm very grateful for that!! Much love!!!!

gothamnightlights

Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and to also leave this comment :) There's so many things in this show I would not have picked up on off my first watch and I'm grateful people are waiting for me to see it first and then taking the time to explain the nuances of this beautiful show to me. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Much love always!

gothamnightlights

I'm very excited to watch the interviews!! Thank y'all so much for being here, and much love to you always!!

Maria

In the book, the bartender (named Maxime) is kind of flirting with Shane, and Shane also feels attracted to him. Shane intentionally leaves the bar area because he’s worried Maxime or someone else will notice. Then he meets Rose. A lot of the book is Shane’s inner thoughts so it’s interesting to see how they brought it to life in the show without much dialog.

3r7s

i've read only a few Anne Rice novels, but what i've seen of this series so far was pretty darn good.. it seemed to me, the script writer adapting the novel knew what he was doing.. as opposed to the Mayfair Witches, which was imho atrocious, sadly. the Talamasca spinoff had so much potential, but they somehow managed to screw it up with some really bad ideas.. :( so i'm curious if Interview can keep its standard..

3r7s

or.. he was just fanboying around a hockey celebrity. Canadians are said to be nearly religious about hockey.. it's up for interperation..

Ganicus

Great reaction Dylan! Got to say I like the new lighting, always love a room with red light, make things more pleasant to watch. You are going to have a lot of fun with the interviews. See you next time..... soon please! :) BTW... the way your pupils and eyes open when there is an ass shot, makes me laugh every time :P

Filavandael

Привет! Всегда приятно увидеть русских в комментах к HR :)

Joshua Rodman

By digital noise I mean the visual "snow". The dancing pixels. CMOS light receivers always have this going on but when there are enough photons hitting them, the signal wipes it out. But in low light, the random firings are visible, and we get this static ish dancing noise effect. Because the effect is purely random and entirely different frome to frame, interframe analysis can strip it right out. There are quality limits to this when the video has lots of motion in it, but obviously your reaction video data doesn't have that problem.

Joshua Rodman

And the grunting in the black screen? Chilling.

Joshua Rodman

I kind of love how the nonlinear inter cutting leads people to very different conclusions about what parts are real. They all work though.

LittleRedBus

Other commenters explain the tuna melt scene in detail, but I wanted to add that on a first watch I was so irritated and upset that Ilya brought svetlana up in the way that he did and I completely understood Shane‘s reaction. However on a second watch and every watch after it’s just so obviously Ilya having planned and organized and thought out this whole interaction to both try to understand Shane more but to also crack the door open a little bit to his own heart, tear his own walls down, and then to be rejected so completely. That second “Hollander” is begging. Gah. There’s a very brief moment after they’ve said each other’s names when Ilya is blissfully happy about it and smiling into the kiss, chasing it, before Shane starts to pull away- it breaks my heart every time. Also it will get a call back later: “I make sure the food is perfect.” Great reaction video! I can’t wait for you to react to the interviews! Also, I think I’m going to watch interview with the vampire along with you!

The actress that plays Svetlana is Russian Canadian, her name is Ksenia Daniela Kharlamova

Insatiate Hope

I got so excited when you said you're starting IWTV next. 😉

katyggls

In the book, Shane thinks he's attractive and thinks he better leave before it becomes obvious. So it makes sense they'd include it in the show.

3r7s

there's one line in this episode i cannot stomach.. "but I like you, too. not as person, of course.. but you have a good mouth." 🙈 maybe i'm touchy, but even as a joke it's mortifying.. 😧

Always so good to see you Catherine, I hope you’ve been doing well :) Much love to you always 🙏🏻💙

You define the blurred lines so well that I believe it exclusively fitting for the scene. I do think the start of the blur revolves around Miles though, from bringing up the 'sweaty blur' phrase symbolizing Shane's internal sexual conflict; to Jacob placing in our minds for a mini-second at the bar that Miles might be Ilya's tool of revenge against Shane; to the increasingly blurring - Rose Shane Miles sandwich; to the most heightened blur between Shane and Ilya on the dance floor. And as the blurring increases so does the intensity of the music, the cinematography, the yearning, the angst ....and so on. Masterpiece stuff! And no wonder it got the Peabody.

gothamnightlights

Thank you, I’m so extremely grateful for you being here! I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about the next two episodes so I’m definitely looking forward to them :) Your support means the absolute world to me🙏🏻💙

Shane Cawley

little things maybe not noticed. Ilya planned for Shane to stay over. when he offered tuna melt it was all prepared and he just took from fridge. Secondly, he asked Shane if his ginger ale was cold enough. third, anyone (except Sletvana) that Ilya has opened up to and loved has left him. Mother, brother, father... his effort in this episode to try to open up was great. but during sex on the couch, Ilya calling him Shane using first names sent Shane freaking out and running. he believes what he wants from Ilya is not possible and its very scared of being hurt nice scene at the episode end when they both came it was by thinking of the other

gothamnightlights

I’m so grateful for you being here :) Your comments absolutely make my day! I’m very excited to see what the last two episodes entail :) Much love to you always 🙏🏻💙

also in the book the girl Ilya is sexing up on the dance floor is a girl who is there with her husband. He loves watching other men make out with his wife. so Ilya has an invitation to do that That fact is how that scene escalated so fast on dance floor

I’m so excited to watch the first episodes! I’ve heard nothing but great things about it :)

I’m such an ass guy I can’t help it 🙏🏻😫 I greatly appreciate you and your kind words, sending much love to you 💙

one more thing ill add is the fact that prior to the tuna melt scene in the book Shane has slept with 2 guys over the past 6 years both went badly for him as he was looking for intimacy and not just sex it also made him more aware of his feelings towards Ilya.

FTLNewsFeed

Yup, I think that Shane could sense that bridge building, but having experienced the years of Ilya shutting him down he could not trust that the bridge would be stable. Probably a major factor in that freakout.

gothamnightlights

I definitely didn’t register the fact that they said their real names for the first time in that regard until the lovely people here started bringing it to my attention! Details like that are so important and that’s why I’m grateful for y’all keeping me informed but also waiting until I’ve watched the episode :) I’m very excited for Interview and I’m so extremely grateful for you support! Much love to you always 💙💙💙💙

Thank you for this ^ She’s absolutely great in this show 💙

Loved the reaction! And CANNOT WAIT for you to watch their interviews. Try not to catch any clips of them outside of the show beforehand if you can. You’ll be very pleasantly surprised, I think.

First watch on Patreon, I haven't read the comments yet, so I may repeat something someone else has already commented on, but I think you can see in the montage at the beginning that Ilya starts out partying and meeting women, but slowly starts being more focused on his phone, looking for Shane's texts, actively diseueding woman who come up to him. Taking care of his father. Then he plans this whole 'date' with Shane, asks him to spend the night, makes him lunch, has his favorite drink ready, opens up the conversation about relationships, trying to sus out what Shane is into. After the phone call with his father, he cuddles with Shane, then Shane takes the lead, making it more about sex, but even then it becomes to much, gets too intimate for Shane, what with them calling each other by their first names, and he freaks out. He goes to this party and there is this girl he admires, she's nice and they get along and he thinks, I know women haven't worked out before, but maybe this one will, I already like her, she's nice and she seems to like me, so he decides this is the time. I will say that Ilay breaks my heart every time with his lost look when Shane gets up to leave, and then seeing the press of Shane and Rose together. Also, I will forever despise that bartender, if someone asks for a soft drink, you don't push the alcohol. For Shane it's a diet and control thing, but it could be a sobriety thing, and sometimes it can only take one small push for someone to cave and buy that harder drink. And for this is wasn't even and upsale thing, because he didn't charge him anyway. Also, Rose is played by Sophie Nelisse, who is in Yellowjackets, a show I also think you'd enjoy. Francois Arnaud (Scott Hunter) is also in it. Can't wait for next episode.

Mitch Nawojczyk

The cup thing is about what they wear to protect their hoo hoos. Removing by mouth will reveal the gold... haha

Joshua Rodman

I think it's common. I've had a lot of married straight guy coworkers try pull me into wolf whistling women while we're on a trip or whatever. It's super awkward for me as they're basically hitting me with heteronormativity and misogyny at the same time. And when I tell them I don't like it they get affronted. Not that all appreciation of people being hot is like this. Hayden and Shane are close friends, so a little line blurring can be fine. And it doesn't go far into the objectification territory though it's a bit awkward juxtaposed with "hit that".

@baydreamer

I check every day for a new episode. Lol

Maria

Yeah, I agree with Shane and everyone else that “hit that” is gross and disrespectful

Harmon Neatfeld

So Miles dancing behind Shane was supposed to be a metaphor for although Shane was trying to be with this girl, his gayness was still breathing down his neck.

V

Lol!! Guess I misunderstood but noted

V

Love back - keep up the great work!

Lori

I will add - at the club, Shane asks for beer; Rose tells Miles to get champagne. Miles comes back with champagne for Rose, but beer for him & Shane.

Luke Eberhart

Another great reaction video. Love them. One thing I've picked up from rewatching these episodes (more times than I can even keep track of) is that putting what happened at Ilya's house in this episode in the context of how things ended in Episode 2 really helps to make sense of Shane running away at the end. At the beginning of Episode 2, they finally have penetrative sex for the first time and it goes amazingly well (for Shane at least). He's catching feelings and clearly had a great experience. Then Ilya ghosts him during and after the Olympics, which is devastating to Shane. Ilya had his reasons, but it was still really painful for Shane to go through that. Then, when they finally hookup again in Vegas during the awards show, everything is much less intimate and much more "just about the sex." Even in the bathroom, the way Ilya talks to Shane is as if he is doing him a favor. He tells him he will do whatever Shane wants if Shane wins MVP and we see him expect Shane to do the same after Ilya is the one to win. It is much more transactional than it ever has been before. And, of course, the sex they have, while very hot, is spicy and hard, but not super intimate. Ilya tops Shane in doggy, where he doesn't have to look him in the face. And they don't even kiss. Afterwards Ilya is cold and gives Shane the impression he just wants him to leave. I think after that Vegas hookup, Shane decides he wants to continue to hookup with Ilya but he isn't going to let himself have feelings for him again. He puts up a wall to protect himself so he doesn't get hurt again like he did in Episode 2. And we see in the montage at the beginning of this episode that they are continuing to have great sex, but there isn't any sign that it's anything more than just sex (although when they aren't hooking up, they do seem to be texting more and more with each other). When Ilya then tries to get more intimate with Shane, inviting him to spend the night, cooking for him, trying to have a conversation with him, and then, ultimately, having really intimate sex on the couch, it freaks Shane out. I think he wants to let that wall he put up down because he has always had very strong feelings for Ilya, despite the wall. But he doesn't want to get hurt again like he did in Episode 2. So he runs away. I love this episode. It is so integral to their relationship and everything that happens from here to the end. Can't wait to see you react to Episode 5.

Mark Edwards

Very enjoyable as always. Cannot wait to see your reaction to E5. Also you have an interesting voice. Lots of potential if you were up for training it. For what it’s worth, I spent a fair percent of my career casting and recording voice talent.

Its not that important but no, cups and jockstraps are very different though worn in the same area.

I'm late to this one, unfortunately. So....I skimmed through the comments to see what people said, but just in case.... Rachel Reid had them eat tuna melts since it was the least romantic meal she could think of. Of course, if both of you had the same thing, you might not notice. Ilya brings up girls since he's trying to figure Shane out a bit, and also trying to open up himself, in his own way. The problem is that while Ilya's trigger is Russia and his family, Shane's is not wanting to admit that he's possibly gay - even with all the hook ups. I think some of us know what that's like. The first name usage just pushed him over the edge. The whole episode is trying to show Shane's inner conflict about his sexuality with all the other mentions of women and then, obviously, him meeting Rose. I was actually confused as to why he ran and had to ask my sister. I had all the reasons right, but she's the one who told me that it was just as much him freaking out since he loved what was happening that day and what that might mean in terms of his sexuality. I'm gay and I missed that. The whole Miles getting way too close thing was partially real and partially imagery to show him caught in between a woman and a man. However, like some have said, if it was totally real, he was in the process of shutting down once he realized Ilya was probably there. He was so zoned out he wouldn't have noticed Miles up behind him. Also, and I'll stop after this, just because you are a bit younger and might not know the song, the club song probably has the most meaning to the scene it's in of any song in the show, other than maybe one other one. Without going into all the tiny details about the song, it's by a Russian duo who were marketed as a lesbian couple and the song was a gay anthem. It came out about 10 years before Russia started to crack down again on LGBTQ people. The fact that it's a Russian song about a lesbian relationship is major, then you add in the lyrics, and the song fits perfectly - especially when Harrison's remix kicks in. Jacob doesn't always use the song to blatantly narrate the scene, but he does a few times and this song's use was perfection. Again, too long on my part, so sorry again.

I love having to lock in for your reactions because you say a lot with your facial expressions and it’s so fun. Like yeah, that moment Ilya walks up to answer the door shirtless and…woof. I also really resonated with your commentary about Shane just not at ALL wanting to go to Wimbledon and how uncomfortable that scene is. I think it gets passed over a lot because of the emotional roller coaster of the tuna meltdown™ but it offers so much insight into Shane’s relationship with his parents and how much pressure he feels. Fun fact! If nobody’s mentioned it yet, Hudson’s filmed a thriller with crave (same streamer that made HR) called Yaga that I am beyond hyped for that just got picked up by amc. It’s based on a play that draws on baba yaga from folklore and is really dark and funny. I hope it’s amazing. My app’s messed up and I can’t edit so I apologize if this is an unintelligible wall of text but yay thank you for sharing and can’t wait for next ep

Sebastian Siwek

I had to follow here :) Berlin Germany here from Youtube love u man and sooo proud of your way big hug

DramaQueen Malèna

Oh. Interesting. I kind of want to believe that because I have a very unpopular opinion about Rose. I really don't like her. The main reason is that she knows that Shane’s a fan, she gets that he is very polite and would never tell her no. Most interactions they have are in public places in Montreal where Shane is famous and so he can't say no without being questioned. So she manipulates him to eat fries (because it's so important for her job to stay fit but not for his? And fries help him to win against Detroit???), into going to the club and dancing with her (because she really wants to dance with Shane and doesn't care if he'suncomfortable-pout) and she shows up in his jersey a few days after they met before they had sex or it was serious. And everyone calls Ilya king of consent and he is. Rose is the opposite - if a person went all stiff and distant with me on the dance floor I would ask if everything is ok. I wouldn't pressure that person to have sex with me. She can feel Shane is not into her but she doesn't leave him a chance to say no without all of Montreal and all hockey fans and his team asking questions. And the question "Would it be a surprise if I told you I'm a fan of yours too?" It's no surprise everyone is a fan of hers but it is when someone is a fan of his? And "And I guess you were pretty good too (at hockey as a child" - that's not how you compliment. It feels like a test. What should he answer? The other Asian kid was better than me? Or downplay it to show he is humble? And she has a terrible job. Boring and everyone is so bad, poor famous actress... And for those who have seen E5: The first conversation in a public space. Seriously? And more things I don't want to spoil. And on speaker phone with the makeup artist?

I can't wait for you to react to 5 and 6! The best episodes!

Milana Smile

oh, „gut punch“ is literally what i feel when ilya turns his head before spotting shane and rose.

Milana Smile

i adore your videos so much! this is my favorite episode, even though 5 and 6 are even better. i enjoyed the first three episodes a lot, but this took the series for me to another level. the moment where ilya turns his head before he sport rose and shane dancing together, in public, one thing he and shane could never do, after shane told him he keeps thinks private, and with the song choice in the club , ripped my heart apart. i will never forget that moment and ilya‘s pain there and when shane left him on the couch. after he planned the day and how he put on hockey so shane would feel comfortable just chilling with him. broke my heart, just like shane’s „we didn’t even kiss“. i love that both characters are not perfect, they have so many communication issue’s. like some people already pointed out, i love how the show portrayes their differences. for shane his family and his country are a safe place, that’s why he always asks ilya about it. while for ilya it’s contrary. for him his sexuality is something he is confident in, even if he doesn’t want to come out, he knows he is bisexual. shane is not that confident with being attracted to guys, he has a plan for how his life should be and he really wants to play hockey and be the best in it, similar to how scott doesn’t want to loose hockey. also the difference with him and ilya in shane’s apartment in the short montage, where they couldn’t keep their hands from each other even while going up the stairs and shane just staring after rose when she goes up the stairs alone. i just love all these small moments. sorry, just my thoughts about this interesting episode. :) also haha about the pregnant shane part on ao3 😂 i really enjoy watching you and can’t wait for the rest❤️

CC

Love your nails btw! So much to talk about in this ep! It feels like the pressures of the outside world are starting to close in. Fun fact: the guy at 42:00 who’s reading the article is harrison browne, an activist for queer and trans rights in sports! He came out as trans while he was a professional hockey player in the NWHL but then he had to retire from the sport to be able to transition. He and a sister wrote a non-fiction book called Let Us Play about trans inclusion in sports. A really cool cameo for heated rivalry!

Thomas Labruna

As far as Shane is concerned it's sort of be careful what you wish for. As much as he wanted more intimacy with Illya, he couldn't dealwith

Thomas Labruna

the switch to first names and all that it signified at that point.

DramaQueen Malèna

About the lightning: I watch because I'm interested in what you say. I don't care much about camera or microphone or light. I think, the warm light makes you look more approachable and authentic... it creates a candle-light or fireplace mood.

Neil Redknap

I had mixed feelings about the club scene. I really liked the attention to detail with the music choice. The lyrics of All The Things She Said were a perfect match for what was unfolding in the story. The fact that it was sung by a pro-LGBTQ Russian pop duo was a nice tie-in as well. I had the same negative reaction to Miles grinding up against Shane on the dance floor. As a once-closeted gay man myself who was very aware of how others perceived me, there is no way a closeted, high-profile athlete would want a man grinding up against him in a public place where he could be outed, so I found that difficult to get past when I first saw the episode, but I may have been way too literal in my interpretation of it and not seen the meaning of what that part of the scene represented.

Thomas Labruna

It's totally I keeping with Illya's persoality

RollyAz

Your nails are so cute

Sebastian Siwek

Sebastian Siwek

Rsbl

I see that moment less as something literally happening and more as a projection of Shane’s internal struggle with his sexuality (and only in his head). The shift in lighting and music, along with Rose’s lack of reaction, reinforces that it’s in his head. Miles appearing to kiss him simultaneously with Rose suggests Shane feeling overwhelmed, caught between his attraction to her and to men.

Loon4life

I’ve noticed Shane says “sure” when he doesn’t mean it. He said sure when Ilya asked him if he wanted to forget about what happened in the shower. He said sure in this episode and you’ll see him say it again in episode 5. When he says sure he is lying 🤣

Jason L

A really tough episode with mixed messages and conflicting psychology. Ilya's continued inablity in not opening up, yet subtly hinting at deeper emotions, is incredibly frustrating. The entire scene on the couch inclusive of Shane being asked about women, followed by a more passionate lovemaking session between the two (inclusive of them using each other's first names) was a revelation for both. Shane appeared to realize that there may be no path forward in developing the relationship, so he fled. Very sad. The club scene was a tough watch! Ilya's intense jealousy of Shane's relationship with Rose spoke volumes, yet he pointedly attempted to make Shane jealous with the rando girl. The irony of him going home alone, and Shane's uncomfortable look when following Rose to the bedroom, were painful! Thanks again for your heartfelt reactions to this show. Looking forward to watching the last two episodes with you.

USAZ

I dig the lighting. It’s like you have an ambulance parked in your bedroom.

Zolveig

I very much agree with you regarding not pushing alcohol when someone asks for a soft drink but in this case the ginger ale was a metaphor. Ilya freely offers it (I sincerely doubt he drinks it himself meaning he bought it for Shane), his parents don’t have it (the restaurant doesn’t serve it) and the flirty bartender has it but questions if that’s really what he wants resulting in Shane choosing beer (heteronormativity) instead. Ilya is the only one who can give Shane what he wants.

Zolveig

It is a terrible joke but Ilya has a pattern of saying something sweet or serious and turning it into a joke or backtracking throughout the series, except maybe at the very end. It’s a defense mechanism.
