@baydreamer

Fans REALLY fought to get a season 4 and only got a movie. Not sure we'd ever get a spinoff.

Joshua Rodman

The one thing I struggle with in this show is the few characters who come across as pure evil, like David. He's almost a cartoon. I get it, he's standing in for a lot of external lack of acceptance, but he's so ... thin.

For what it's worth, Tori was the original main character of the first book of the universe. I don't think we'll get a show of hers, but you can read her book if you want. ---- And yes, asexual, or ace, is the normal term for people who don't experience interest in physical realworld attraction in the manner that .. most of us do. The specific experience varies. Some have a lot of horny stuff going in their heads but don't find it appealing to bring it into the real world with others. Some people don't find the topic very appealing at all. And if we're talking about it, there are also a fair number of people who are aromantic, not interested in those sorts of relatoinships. Some are both ace and aromantic, some are only one.

Thank you for everything you said at 21:00! I’m aromantic and asexual too (if you’re both, it’s often shortened to “aroace” btw - it’s also possible to be only aromantic and not asexual, or only asexual and not aromantic). I’d been getting vibes from isaac ever since season 1, but am so used to all representation being unspoken/just headcanon/confirmed after the fact, that the fact they said both words out loud and gave us that really sweet scene really made me super happy. (And Isaac got his little animated leaf moment, just like all the other characters did!) There are very few asexual characters and barely any aromantic characters that exist. So this is so important to have, and I imagine/hope it brought awareness to a lot of people who wouldn’t have known about us otherwise. Alice Oseman (the creator) is also aroace - one of the ONLY celebrities I know of who’s out.

Ben Gilbert

He'll get fleshed out more before Alice is through with him.

Joshua Rodman

Honestly I really wanted more from Isaac's story. I wanted to get a more complete picture of the struggles and realities of the experience. Are there other pieces of media worth looking at that you're aware of? I can find lists but ... it's hard to know which representations are .. good, from a big list.

Isaac isn't in the book at all. He's strictly a show character. In the books they have a friend called Aled instead. Aled has a book of his own called Radio Silence.

So, Isaac wasn't in the books. For whatever reason, Alice Oseman decided to not include Aled in the series. Aled is the character from the books that Isaac replaced. In fact, in the first season, Isaac talks with Nick at the bowling alley about a book he's reading. That book features Aled. It's called "Radio Silence". It's a wonderful read. But, no. Isaac does not figure in the books at all. But, we all still love him. Alice, as she wrote the character, really built him up to be much like herself, AroAce, which is Aromantic and Asexual.

Hey :) I agree but understand that it’s hard to give everyone fully fleshed out storylines in such a big cast with relatively short episodes. I’m crossing my fingers for the movie to show him more, but for now i’m just happy he exists. I highly recommend alice oseman’s coming of age novel “loveless”, it has an aroace main character and goes much more into the process of figuring yourself out and the struggles and joys surrounding the aroace experience. There’s also a Japanese tv series called koisenu futari - it’s a bit weird at times acting-wise and writing-wise, but fully focuses on 2 aroace protagonists who form a family of choice together. Also cool to see contrasts and similarities between 2 people with the same identity. But as sad as it is to admit, those are the only two pieces of media i know of that are actually focused on and feature aroace people as protagonists. Other than that, I only know of some characters in ensemble casts here and there, like Cash from Heartbreak High, or Todd from bojack horseman (both are ace but not aro).

I'm not particularly surprised that the options are not vast. But I thought it was worth asking in case you had some top picks. We're obviously not responsible to educate the world about ourselves. It's easy to believe that Alice has some good insight so I may start there.

Hi Dylan, I mistakenly thought I was asexual for a while until I learned about demisexuality which I realised is totally me. I can't have a sexual relationship with someone until I've connected with them on an emotional level. It can make it pretty difficult to find someone who is willing to wait but I can happily be on my own 😘❤️

Please let me know what you think of the book if you choose to read it! It meant a lot to me when I was looking everywhere for any representation. I wish I’d had that book when I was questioning as a teenager, but at least I had it during my 20s. And more and more aspec people are finding themselves and being open these days, so I’m sure more books/films/essays/studies/etc are coming in future.

I wonder why they would even be hesitant to releases a fourth season. The show is so beloved and acclaimed. Maybe the viewership was going down? Even then it would benefit everyone to get a fourth season

@baydreamer

Decreased viewership was part of it with season 3. But scheduling and expenses figured into it, too. It was only pitched as 3 seasons which most Netflix shows are. But Kit and Joe had moved on to bigger projects, so they would be more expensive to get for a show versus a movie, and they and other actors had scheduling conflicts . Kit and Joe were made executive producers of the movie, though.

I feel like there are a lot of people out there who don't feel the need to rush into sex. Even if we are super physically attracted, that doesn't mean it necessarily will lead to the relationship outcomes we want. I suspect dating apps and similar work against this somewhat, viewing it as a market instead of a potentially interesting person.
