Timothy Alberts

I worked with Leonardo DiCaprio on Marvin's Room when he was 17, I think, and he still had to have a minder on set. He looked 15.

I loved this interview. It shows how smart and emotionally intelligent Jacob is. It's also so ironic that he talks about how many directors think they are geniuses, but they almost never are. But everyone who has worked with him says he's a genius.

And yes, anyone can buy the rights to a piece of intellectual property, and the terms are negotiated with whoever owns that IP. Here, he asked Rachel Reid to sell him the right to create whatever he wanted with her books, but he chose to involve her and had her read all the scripts. Not everyone does that, and there are many shows and movies that have bastardized the source material, and there's nothing the creator can do about it unless it's spelled out in their contract. I'm a lawyer, so sorry for such a legal answer! ;)

Jacob and his production partner Brendan Brady have their own production company (Accent Aigu Entertainment). They reached out to Rachel in 2023 and optioned the rights to the Game Changers book series. Heated Rivalry then became the first property the new company produced. Hope that helped!

Oh this is one of my favourite interviews! The more i learn about jacob, the more i become a fan of his. It’s sad how rare it is to hear someone talk about labour rights and workplace ethics and basic respect for cast and crew. Like when he was asked about hudson and connor’s sexualities and whether he found it important to cast queer people in queer roles, he responded “you can’t ask that during a hiring process, it’s illegal.” I have such massive respect for him.

Also, since they mentioned portrait of a lady on fire - have you seen that film? If not, it might make for a good movie night reaction one day? 👀

Usually, the author of the book or the publisher own the rights of a story. It depends on the contract they have. Then: A studio/platform can buy the rights to make a movie or a series out of it. In that case, they look for a director and Jacob Tierny would have had to apply for this job. But he was already writing the script. It can go the other way round: A filmmaker writes a movie adaptation and then he looks for a platform or a studio to produce it. And to buy the rights. A rich filmmaker can also buy the rights himself. A filmmaker can also search for funds to produce a movie. Jacob Tierny presented his idea to Bell Movie who owns the Canadian platform Crave and they bought the rights and financed part of the production. Another part was financed by the Canadian government.

He was talking about optioning the rights, where you basically put down a deposit with the rights owner, (in this case Rachel) for the exclusive permission to work with the material, as opposed to 'buying' the rights. Optioning is a much more respectful approach. And his new project is also based on a book.

Jacob and his business partner Brendan Brady formed the production company Aigu Entertainment. They optioned the right from Rachel Reid, which means that they paid her an amount of money to have the right to first produce a piece of work based off of her books. Options have time limits and conditions so usually if a production company options a work and doesn't move forward with creating a production then the rights revert back to the author and they get some money for having sat on the work not being made for a few years. Options also depend on media, so authors can have companies working on films, tv shows, computer games and many other outlets and they all be different works going on by different companies making them.

Tierney is smart, aware, funny, cute, etc… def the sleeper heartthrob of the bunch

I'm so so glad you watched this. Jacob T is the GOAT. If I was in the industry, he'd be my bucket list showrunner.

Hey Dylan, Connor Storrie was in the recent series on criminal minds and he was amazing, he’s in ep 4,5, 6 and 9 as far as I know, ep 7 is the last one that was out on Disney so check it out if you like :) he amazes me. 🫶🏻

Yes, his shows "Letterkenny" and "Shoresy" are both comedy satires.

"Jacob Tierney’s production studio and company is Accent Aigu Entertainment, a Toronto-based production house he co-founded and co-presides over with producer Brendan Brady." Jacob is actually a 'studio.' He owns a production company that bought the rights from Rachel, sold his idea/content to Crave who partially funded it, and then sold the broadcast rights to HBOmax.

This was a great interview. I love that we got more information about why so many people think Jacob is an incredible person to work with/for.

The degree to which higher power is just another name for god varies a lot from chapter to chapter.

I think any honest sharing about mental health topics is super helpful, especially with all the harmful stigma out there. It's one of the things I really loved about Heartstopper.

Mark100

It's almost a shock to hear someone speak so well. Jacob's answers are obviously not rehearsed but they're so *incredibly* clear & warm & direct that it sounds like they could be.

I suggest you check out Jacob and Brendan’s appearance on the Loon Call podcast! Maybe after you’ve read the books (Loon Call is not exclusively book focused but it’s hosted by authors and they discuss the books a lot in the interview). Rachel Reid also appeared on there more recently.
