Review: Waifu Dreams City (Patreon)

So let's start here: Waifu Dreams City is $2 for the most recent version, and basically free for older versions, and that's an awesome deal. This is a pretty large game with a large amount of content, so this is a great price, especially for a fully 3D game.

So how is the game? It's good and bad. On the one hand, while I don't love the art style, it's definitely consistent and the game provides a huge amount of customization options. Despite being a fully 3D "sandbox" style game, the game honestly works sort of like a Japanese RPGM game: you just go around hunting for scenes. Characters have different poses and animations, and there are different character types and themes. There are also some activities including dancing (the big one, and the worst minigame imo), a brothel, a gloryhole, and some other stuff. There's also a bit of a simple third-person shooter game mode, too.

The main drive here is progression. You earn money to buy and upgrade stuff and "sex points" are the main character progression mechanic, which you'll mostly spend on upgrades to get you more money and more sex points. Then you also have more traditional XP and levels which unlock new "floors" in the central tower. Many of the game's NPCs also have "love" meters and levels.

So what's in the tower? Every ten character levels you unlock a new floor usually themed after a fetish like BDSM, foot fetish content (😍), giant girls, gamer girls that ignore you while you fuck them, etc. You'll proceed through these floors fucking everything that moves as you look for new scenes. There are no men in the game, you and everyone else is a female (with a strap-on when needed) or futanari. As you progress through the tower you'll probably find some of the floors to be great and others to be mid, but I thought that most of them were at least interesting, and I was typically excited to see what was next.

The animations, poses, and scenes are pretty hot! I think this is really a futanari game at its core. Futa is technically optional, but this is way more of a futa/futa and futa/fem game than yuri, so be aware of that going in. There is some fem/fem, but that doesn't feel like the focus to me. I want to give a special mention to the foot fetish floor. The game's character models have very nice looking feet and the animations and poses of the foot stuff were excellent.

And so, overall, I think this is a game with good art, decent gameplay, and a fun little world to explore, but...

I think what lets this game down is just that it starts to feel like gamified pornhub after a while. The context of scenes and interactions start becoming dramatically less important in favor of just grinding for the next floor or unlock. The sex scenes feel like less and less the focus of the gameplay and more and more like just a reward for engaging with various XP bars. I think that's fine in the sense that that's all some people really want, but it makes the game feel less like a game and more like a one-dimensional masturbation aid as it goes on. The early game is defined by exploration, unlocking new game modes (many of which are basically simple clickers, but that's still gameplay) and something approaching mechanics, but after a while the game devolves into GIF Unlocker: The Game.

But the game is also not done yet. I played this game last year sometime, and there were a lot less mechanics and gameplay systems then, so it's obvious the dev is working on those aspects of the game in particular. So I think the future looks bright! This game has the art, animations, fetish content, and even minigames down pat. What I want going forward are more sandbox mechanics, more context for scenes, and more content in the hub city itself rather than in the themed floors. As long as the game grows in that direction--deeper rather than just broader--I think we could have an all-time classic on our hands!

If you like or don't mind futa content and are looking for something lewd to play, I recommend giving Waifu Dreams City a shot! While I think the game has problems, it's still easy to recommend just on the strength of its presentation, variety, and amount of content alone.
