Gene, Sometimes the silence can be like thunder. Your friend, Charles

Elizabeth Bowie

This I think is the best letter yet. Gene Vincent telling Charles Darwin the real deal. As in : " Out here nobody adapts, they either evolve or get erased." Or : " Struggle is violent." Or " Like a guitar amp screaming because it has to, because silence means extinction." Powerful language ! Would Gene Vincent have ended this letter with "Be-Bop-A - Lula, Chuck " ? :))) Just a great letter ! Thank you.

Annie Stacie

But what does strong mean? What does it mean to cut the deepest? I don't wanna be loud AND wrong.

Amber Martinez

It really is a knife fight isn’t it…Good thing I brought ma fists and ma long sword…🥊🖤💋

Bill Murphy

Hey Bob, thanks for the letter and photo. Man , Gene Vincent had quite a beard. And who knew Charlie was so good looking?

Paddy Mcmahon

“Survival with Backbeat” Now that’s a beauty Bob!

Adam Selzer

So, Gene telling Charles he can’t play guitar behind his head?

Bonnie Ramba

I will have a long time to ponder this, as the day is young for me. As I finished the letter, it made sense that this is something I needed to know. I’m starting a new profession … something I’ve always wanted to do. At 70 years old, I’ve got to fight. Failure and mediocrity can come very easily. Thank you, Sir. I pray for you daily, and send heartfelt appreciation 🕊️

Absolutely ridiculous. This is the last of these AI-generated pieces of garbage I will waste my time reading. WTF Bob?

AVOLdesign

Wonderful piece. Gene Vincent – one of a kind.

Amanda

I've enjoyed reading these. Also, do you ever wonder what a Letter Never Sent addressed to you would say? Or who would send it? It's interesting to think about anyway. Thanks and God bless.

Different prospectives of life. Some of us want to stay in the shadows. Darwin did a study of finches and how they adapted as so is life. Whoever cares, my favorite quote by Erin Van Buren: "There are four things in this life that will change you- love, music, art, and loss. The first three will keep you wild and full of passion. May you allow the last to make you brave."

(((Charles Darwin responds to Gene Vincent after his letter finally got sent ))) oh dear boy, why do you think I live on this boat? I know the violence of the world too well. not all of us can stomach living constantly in “survival” mode like you. nor would we want to. so we make our choices and adjust our goals respectively. did you know I dropped out of medical school after being forced to watch a child undergo surgery without any anesthesia? (what kind of vicious animals do that to a child?) now, that was some “noisy” suffering… the screaming still haunts me. but not all suffering is noisy. just ask john at patmos. admittedly- i’m only agnostic, but still, i pray daily that we’ll “evolve” right past this wicked beast nature. in the meantime, i’ll be on the boat. studying stuff. … speaking of beasts, you mock the finches, but they’re quite delicious. maybe your stressed nervous system could use a wild bird or two… besides the owl (of course). why don’t you come on out to the “beagle” this weekend? those loud crowds you’ve commanded sound exhausting. the mrs would love to hear you play in person. she's a big fan. ok young man, my clipboard’s calling. and even though your words were unnecessarily hostile toward my life’s work, I do thank you for writing. I don’t get much mail out here. take good care. and please- don’t get into any knife fights. (have you tried resolving your grievances with a little game of backgammon? it works for us.) yours truly, charles :))

Emma Wedgwood adores these letters Gene as she be bops a Lu a. No knives please. Just the revolver.

Barbara Hill-Mayo

Contrast of two people - the scientist and the rocker! I wonder what Darwin would reply to Gene’s practical views. I guess they’re products of their times. Interesting read -thought provoking!

James O’ Donnell

There are so many layers to every one of these letters ( and short stories ) that one day someone’s gonna have to .. write a book !

Emile Lallana

man jack london would have a field day with this one

I listen to songs that will still bei heard 100 years from now, songs that blow me away or bring tears to my eyes because of their overwhelming beauty, and as I ready the letter, I get a sense of the high price the artist paid for them.

I love how Bob brings to us Gene Vincent's naive and desperate frankness in addressing to Darwin. The "hard line between the ones who can command a room and the ones who get swallowed" is so touching and matters so deeply to Bob . It was Soon after Midnight for me, when I got this letter yesterday and... I feel that something from the mood of this wonderful song, which Bob has been singing in his Rough and Rowdy Ways show which concludes tonight, is here, in this letter. Harshness of life mixes with and gets overwhelmed by a surpassing tenderness.

Jeff Poushter

Wow i think this is my favorite one so far. Incredible wisdom! “The weak fade into the walls, the strong bend the air.”

Jon Baldwin

Replies never sent. Charles to Gene. Why thank you Gene for your observations. Why, it might almost be said that you are observing me as much as I observe the finches. Just to let you know, young man, I did a lot more than that. In any case it takes a lot more time, certainly than we have, for these things to unfold. Your gestures of youth I can appreciate. I was young once. Time moves in patterns, big patterns, small patterns. It moves in ways we don't even know. Sometimes very fast, sometimes almost slow you cant see it. The theory / action distinction is beyond you. You're better than this. Why it is no different to the differences they been putting up between us since man first uttered prayer. Stay sweet, Gene x

win winnington

Yup, the sad truth, individual egos fighting for survival and attention until they’re eventually swallowed by death.

John Tenzei

If being remembered is your God and you believe the world to be a "knife fight" then you will have to "cut deep" to become your God.
