... as if alcoholism was a scavenger hunt for children 😂😂😂 o k gotta keep reading OH. SO. GOOD. A lot to unpack Can't eat all that stuff in a single bite I'm in a mischievous mood Brilliant story According to the comments, some are down about it They could change their way of thinking Happiness is just a state of mind Anytime you want You can cross the state line That thing used to bug me something fierce! Fanks for making me laugh, Bob Dylan.

Searing and familiar from my own experience in a rural town where family secrets and public corruption were entangled for generations. Not to mention the scavenger hunt. I always hear these stories read in your voice 🔥 💖

Dialogue so good it's painful. Story full of hurt and regret. My relatives grew citrus in Florida. Every summer I would go and stay with my aunt and uncle. I would wander far from the house among the orange, lemon, and grapefruit trees. One hot day a large snake with an unusual pattern began to crawl across my pink sneakers. For a second he looked directly into my eyes. TSomehow I knew to stay silent and still. He crawled away. I ran and told my aunt

about the snake. She hunted him down and cut off his head with a machete. He was a diamond back rattle snake. But he had shown me mercy.

I really liked this short story 👍

WHOA!!! Power-full story!!! Invoked A-LOT of nostalgia for me! You share many visually interesting, relatable and highly entertaining stories, but this for me takes the cake! Or should I say snake… Honestly coulda been about my pops and familiga history. Wild stuff. Relishing all those wonderful details as they kick around in ma brain… What a cliff hanger too! Did he run over the snake with the Cadillac? I gotta know boo🙏🏽🖤🐍💋

You can’t succeed in a losing town - it fits the story’s mood regardless of provenance. Waycross Parish is basically built on that premise: a town so structurally rigged that ambition just curdles into corruption or escape...Need to leave my horse town because of corruption and nepotism everywhere… and when you see through it, they come after you with 3-meter-long sticks and threaten to smash your nose in. I m not kidding ...

Really enjoyed this. The descriptions really set the scene in a punchy prose. . Dialogue slick and punchy too. Definitely one to save and read again. Thanks for posting!

The symbolism layered throughout the story gives a sense of the whole locale, almost like its own story running parallel. You can imagine a dozen other characters and what their lives might be like. The idea of a reptile themed casino sends a shiver up my spine. Not having a combination for the safe must be a pretty common experience. Makes me feel better in an odd kind of way! There are lots of surprisingly relatable details like this within all of the stories. They touch you on a personal level, and it really enhances the reading experience. If you enjoyed this story, check out Ripgut, Sleepwalk, and High Tide if you haven't already. Whenever I get a new post notification from this page, I feel a surge of excitement and I can't wait to read it! The dark and gritty stories are turning out to be my favorites.

All things are a single form which has divided and multiplied in time and space. W.B. Yeats -- A Vision Is not the sky a father and the earth a mother, and are not all living things with feet or wings or roots their children? -- Black Elk The involution of man was his descent from the sphere of the spirit, developing bodies of a mental, emotional and then physical nature until he manifested upon this planet. His evolution is to civilize this planet and to develop mastery of the physical, emotional and mental planes and relink himself in unity with God once more, thus completing the cycle. He came from God as an inexperienced Spark of Divine Fire and returns to Him, with all the experience of manifestation, as a Lord of Humanity. Gareth Knight -- The Work of a Modern Occult Fraternity In many systems of thought, the proliferation of forces is seen in sexual terms -- the cosmic parents produce entities in male and female pairs (Gnostic syzygies), which in turn produce offspring. Hence, Confucius says: "Difficulty is experienced as Heaven and Earth begin their intercourse." That this has an explicit sexual connotation is confirmed by McClatchie: "The figure of Difficulty represents the hard and the soft beginning to have sexual intercourse, and bringing forth with suffering." Thus we see that the correct and incorrect correlation ("intercourse") of dynamic (male) and magnetic (female) lines in any I Ching hexagram symbolizes the favorable (life-enhancing) or unfavorable (life-negating) combinations of thought and feeling within the psyche.

Reuben Bond is a rich language user💥Boredom is the big absente. Nice! Didn’t William Faulkner write like this? Detailed yet not outstretched into boredom to read…?

This story fascinated me. Wade’s father sounded corrupt, but not without mystery. There really was nothing said about Wade’s relationship with his father, other than he had saved one of Wade’s articles … that actually does say something. From there we go to Pastor Delbert’s snake handling church. I lived in Virginia near the West Virginia border. There was one not too far from me. Yes … I was curious, and NO, I didn’t go. I worked in exotic pets for years but wanted no part in handling any snake that was wild caught! The baby’s shoe in the gun safe was poignant … maybe his father did have a heart? Corrupt people aren’t necessarily heartless. Sometimes they just categorize their feelings. At the end, the Crawlin’ Kingsnake was a crowning moment … kind of like the prima ballerina at the end of the play. I can’t explain this story’s meaning … but I really enjoyed it. Sir, you give us so much, and I want to thank you always, and pray for you too 🕊️

This is a story I could wrap my head around. I grew up in Louisiana.

I read this earlier today, didn’t understand it much. Decided to give it another read before I shut my eyes. I appreciate the subtle humor within this story. It helps blend with the brutality of it all. As you say Bob, It’s life and life only, and stories are just stories…. In the meantime i’ll be sitting pretty until your next lovely Patreon post. I appreciate you Bob. Thanks for sharing.

There's a line that resonates. It's this one: "I look tired because I stayed". Old habits die hard 🤕, right? Nobody ever said changing them was easy... Or if someone did, they were wrong.

Another great one from Reuben Bond! This line.. ‘I loved her then with a force so sudden it felt like internal bleeding.’ Thankyou Bob ❤️

…..grief’s long shadow over a Father’s ills laid bare and heavy with a regret never eased. Tender sentiment lingers in trembling margins, yet the hearth is cold…. …you cannot go home again; the people we were lies buried deeper than the loved ones we’ve lost. 🌌

King (part 1) King, as his friends called him, never ate dogs, really. That was just a rumor. He did help them get free, though, through the tunnels under the cypress roots. That town wasn’t a great place to live, not even for a dog. After that fella, who never helped his family (with a sister that will never let him forget it), left in the Cadillac, King fled the scene and slid up into his den, underneath a campaign poster he’d dragged in the day before. Once he was inside, he stopped, took aim, and In one “fell-swoop-of-a-burp” King coughed up a perfectly polished boot to match the muddy one he’d found earlier. “Found” meaning, it was outside just sitting on a porch… so …- “finders keepers,” you know. He was always slightly morally flexible, but overall, a generally decent character. if you pressed him, he’d give you loads of good reasons why these people owe him “way more than boots.” The perspective boot-owners recovered from King’s crimes, but remained perplexed. “Why would someone steal just one boot?” He’d heard the mud-boot lady say from under the porch, with her mud-boot lodged in his throat. King was indeed well big enough to store a huge boot in his gullet. He smuggled a fairly stout Rottweiler nearly two miles in the back of his throat once. He didn’t have his own bodily measurements, but judging by the reactions of the people who’d caught a glimpse of him, he knew it was possible he could qualify to be in that Guinness world book of records. but he didn’t know who to ask about a thing like that. So, after he gagged up that second boot, he placed them both neatly under his campaign poster roofing. He arranged the boots sidesaddle, so they formed a lovely heart-shaped conversation area where the two boot openings met. He gazed at his den and his new boots with their homey, hopeful configuration, and smiled. Then he set out on what he believed might be a calling from the most High God: to “set at liberty” a certain python in a plexiglass box.
