If nautical nonsense is something you wish, then be careful what you wish for, because Netflix is delivering the next SpongeBob SquarePants feature with Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie. In this review, I’ll show you how Sandy Cheek’s spin-off film is full of Texas-sized problems that results in more than Bikini Bottom that needs saving, and make this not only the worst SpongeBob SquarePants movie, but one of the worst things to ever come out of the franchise.

Well, It's not like I didn't try to warn you when I told you about it. I did try to enjoy the movie, It's SpongeBob for Peak's sake, but everything about it just doesn't work! And Sandy seemed like she had some great potential. I would've expected her to have a "Lightyear" style of adventure and be more like a Texas Sci-fi movie. But I guess it's just too much to ask nowadays since I feel like they have to keep the standard of fun and games and not implement something serious. It's as if they don't know what to do with him anymore and with this movie, it even makes some of the disliked seasons look like a classic in comparison. All I can ask is if there would be a better direction for the next Movie. Not all hope is lost but I guarantee it'll probably be better than this.

I have not seen this movie and do not plan to, but even I’ve seen many of the new SpongeBob episodes, and I promise they are far better than this

Strider_Blaze

Dear god, it does look that bad indeed!

I remember I was one of those people who did watch this movie back when it got leaked and I thought it was really bad, and I honestly agree with almost everything you said in this review, I will admit it is debatable if this would be considered one of the worst things to ever come out of the franchise, especially compared to some of the worst episodes of the series in seasons 6-8, but this is by far the worst out of all the SpongeBob movies and it’s not even a contest. It has interesting ideas, but they are poorly executed because of the terrible story with unfunny humor, the animation looks cheap and sometimes horrifying, and the characters both old and new, being poorly written, rather it be the new characters like Sandy’s family being completely wasted and barely doing anything, or the recurring characters barely doing anything after they’re taken, overall this is by far the worst SpongeBob movie and definitely the worst thing to come out of it in a long time. And honestly it’s because of stuff like this as to why I am so turned off by SpongeBob nowadays and how all Nickelodeon is doing is milking the whole franchise for what it’s worth, not to mention with how it feels like nowadays Nickelodeon only cares about SpongeBob and nothing else and if your show isn’t as successful as SpongeBob, it gets thrown away by Nick, and it’s because of this why I feel like there are so many people in the animation community who do not take Nickelodeon seriously as a major animation network in the veins of either Disney or Cartoon Network is because they can’t let go of SpongeBob and how now it’s seriously hurting their reputation, and I just feel like nowadays this really is a true testament as to why I honestly think Nickelodeon would be better off just letting the entire franchise go because it’s seriously hurting their reputation as an animation network, and I’m not saying this to just trying to hate on SpongeBob, I’m not trying to act like either old school Mr Enter or 24 Frames of Nick with his infamous take of Sponge On The Run, I’m saying this out of my love for the original series and what it was before Nickelodeon kept shoving it in everyone’s faces, because if they keep doing it, it’s just gonna do more harm to Nickelodeon than actually good, and honestly after watching this movie, it’s also why I am really not looking forward to the Plankton movie coming to Netflix next year, because chances are it might have the same quality as the Sandy Cheeks movie.

Now you know how everyone’s feeling Mat because this movie sucks. I was one of those people who did see it way earlier in the year when it was leaked for the whole internet to see and this is by far the worst SpongeBob movie I ever seen and one of the worst SpongeBob projects out there that ending making the spinoff series like Camp Koral looked more entertaining than this. I thought it was uncompleted at first from the leak but it turns out it was a complete version and I had to wait until everyone including you Mat so I can share my piece with this movie. Anyways, despite the interesting ideas of a Sandy Cheeks Movie and voice acting, the rest was hot garbage from the uninspired story, hopeless writing, bad directing, cheap animation, a horrible comedy which I ended up not laughing at all throughout, flat characters from both old and new, cringe acting from the live action actors especially wasting Wanda Sykes as a villain, terrible execution, and some unintentionally disturbing moments like Wanda Sykes’s villain twist and I don’t know about you but that visuals on her at the end reminds me of Modok’s visuals from Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and it looked godawful. I don’t know whose ideas was this but I don’t want to see that type of visuals again. But other than that, this might be on par as Megamind Vs The Doom Syndicate as one of the worst animated films to come out of this year. Although I’ll give this movie a slighter edge than Megamind because of the voice acting but still it was terrible and the worst way to celebrate your 25th anniversary of SpongeBob on TV. Chances are that I won’t be excited for the new Plankton movie next year any time soon in terms of how Nickelodeon will also screwed that up too.

Wow! And I thought the episode “One Course Meal” was bad! Now, these SpongeBob movies have pretty much become the new Ice Age!

Ethan Jerez

Hello animat my name is Ethan and I have a question for you can you review the 2018 animated movie next gen from Netflix please 🥺🙏

Michael Killey

Now i wonder why the movie got leaked months before.

Alan Oliva

Not really the right logic for this, Ice Age was never or had a TV show. Looney Tunes would probably be the better example.

Bryce Gundy

Oh. Right. Didn’t think of that. I was only saying this in the context of the 4 SpongeBob movies.

Max Cull

Well folks, Thelma The Unicorn just got dethroned and now this movie is currently ranked as the 2nd worst movie Animat has seen in 2024

Maybe as a way to show the state of the franchise. I mean look, I love SpongeBob. But when you know a franchise has ran its course and has given everything it wanted. It is time to say goodbye. Let it go out with some dignity. Like Pokemon with Ash, like Arthur, everything has to come to an end, otherwise we either see it as a former shell of what it is, or if brought back won’t capture the magic of what made it special to begin with. And I don’t mean that as a forum of ridicule as I care. But sometimes it’s best to know where to end it and leave with the best memories of it.

Haileigh Tenney

This is why I would never sell my film projects to Netflix because of the arrogant heads causes studio interference

I remember having this conversation with you earlier this year Mat, and from what you said about the leak and it reaction and from everyone else we talked with about the state of the franchise, this movie takes the cake and is a real downer on how it has been going for 25 years. Even in one of your podcasts talking about a reboot of The Fairly Oddparents, you said it best that is just like the rest of us (well not everyone cause everyone will have their different opinions), can’t we just do something new? It shows when you are stuck with old ideas and not investing in something new that you become a shell of what you used to be. And honestly I feel bad for Nickelodeon (but then again they did this to themselves). What they really need is to give the franchise a break and start new again. We can’t stay in the 90’s-2000’s. We have to keep moving forward with new stories and ideas cause they are out there, it is just that they don’t want to give them a chance. But now that this movie really shows the low point, the main question is will it bounce back or will it finally be the thing that sinks it. I’m sorry, but this is not a dig into SpongeBob or the movie, it is just the frustration on knowing when something has gone for so long and you know when it has run its course.

Joshua Copelan

Oh and I want to start a new quote to match something that reigns true. The saying, “You either die a hero, or live long to become the villain.” “You either end on a high and be talked about forever (ATLA, The DC Timverse, Futurerama, King of the Hill, X-Men (the original 90’s one and Evolution), Hey Arnold, ect.). Or you can make it live for an eternity, and see it turn into a zombie seeing it as hollow as it is now than it was before.”

SonicandShadowPlushChannel

🥺it's sad that SpongeBob is becoming more stale and plus SpongeBob is my favorite franchise and I found out that Sponge on the run and this movie took finding Nemo and SpongeBob episodes as well for me I will stick 2 SpongeBob movies and finding nemo thank you very much😒

Bryce Gundy

Isn’t it illegal for someone to post an entire movie onto the Internet early before it’s release?
