Muppets Tonight was the first series that the Muppets team created after Jim Henson was gone. But in this review, we will see them be a bit more edgy than how they were in The Muppet Show. But does that help make Muppets Tonight a better show? That’s what this review is all about!

Does that mean you'll do the Jim Henson hour next or does that not count considering the episodes aren't available yet

I love Muppets Tonight. Admittedly it kinda ends unceremoniously, and the guest stars get fewer and fewer the longer it goes, to the point of being basically cameos (discounting the actual Cameo episode), but it was definitely awesome in the first season! Garth Brooks trying out random new acts, Sandra Bullock being insecure, John Goodman being tormented unintentionally by Andy and Randy Pig, and the constant feuds Miss Piggy has with stars like Michelle Pfeiffer and Whoopi Goldberg; all of these are practically Simpsons-esque personality reworkings of these iconic celebrities. And I love it!

While I don’t think this series is bad it definitely is very sub par compared to other Muppet projects, while I do appreciate it go at least trying to do something new and giving an introduction to some of the iconic Muppet characters, it really felt like the people behind the show didn’t know how to handle the show after Jim Henson’s passing and it did feel like it was suffering from an identity crisis.

Yeah, it really is sad concerning the lost opportunities this show could’ve had as a way to bring back The Muppets to their old days when they were a cultural phenomenon back in the late 70s & early 80s as well as introducing a new generation to the iconic characters in addition to their new ones, whom many would’ve felt right at home in the original Muppet Show. Plus, it was an interesting idea of having the show be more of a Saturday Night Live-esque show as a way to satire most variety shows back in the 90s and could’ve had many opportunities for the Muppets to inject their familiar schticks while incorporating some new humor as well. But the fact the crew didn’t know what to do with their new ideas, in addition to having newer Muppet characters like Clifford & Ritzo be the leads instead of the already more familiar Muppets like Kermit, Fozzie & Miss Piggy that audiences loved over 3 decades (or 4 in Kermit’s case if you factor in his early years on Sam & Friends), really made this show come off as a pale copy of The Muppet Show. Also, CAN WE PLEASE STOP SEXUALIZING/OBJECTIFYING PIGS?!? It’s already bad enough Illumination does it with the Sing films with Rosita with her costumes like the one she wore during her performance of “Shake It Off” at the end of the first film & the Cheshire Cat one she wore at the beginning of the second film during “Let’s Get Crazy”, but the fact that the Muppets also have a history of doing that… it makes me feel dirty and not the good kind. Sorry for that quick tangent, but it’s something I’ve wanted to get off my chest.

You got a lot done before your tonsillectomy, Mat! I’m surprised the Muppet Vlogs returned so soon!

I at least get the idea where some of the characters coming from in terms of later appearing in Muppets From Space like Clifford for example. By the way, I prefer to have Clifford wearing sunglasses than without them as he looked naked without it. But yeah from the look of it, it looked dated upon trying to be too edgy at the time which happened again later on with the Muppets Wizard of Oz movie upon bringing adult humor into this. I don’t know if I want to watch this, but I think I’ll pass.

Just to say I didn't remember too much of this series, In fact I come to realize I always get this confused with either with the Muppet show (in which now that can be debunked since the whole series is now available in Disney+) And the segments of the Jim Henson Hour, and I thought it was all in one entity. Overall I guess it wasn't a mystery to know that this show wasn't good even back at the day and even worth remembering at the time. All is to say it looked decently okay at the time, and I do remember some bit and pieces that is still funny and I would even say turned into memes on youtube. Does make you reflect upon what they did later for the 2015 series, now comes to the thought if that series was more of an Update version of "Tonight" while also being a parody of those Office-style sitcoms. Guess it's true what they say "Some things never change," for the better or worse.
