To celebrate Disney’s 100th anniversary, they turned their animated feature, Wish, into a centennial celebration. In this review, I’ll be looking closely into this movie and see if this Wish is the film that honors Disney’s legacy or marked its 100 years with a miss.

Well glad to see that you enjoyed and I’m honestly have been willing to check out myself. Gonna keep an open mind when I check it out.

I saw it yesterday and I felt exactly how you felt about the movie (especially after reading the early reviews). It may not be up there with the classics, Renaissance or modern films, but it’s still a solid and fun feature with uniquely stylized animation, charming characters and well-executed songs that pay tribute to the company’s animation legacy. Happy 100 years Disney! P.S. Stay during the credits, it’s worth watching

I have honestly yet to see the movie myself but I am planning on seeing it in a couple days. I was honestly a bit shocked with the early reviews and how people were disappointed with it, but I definitely am hoping to go in with an open mind and form my own opinion on the film, although I can definitely see how this will satisfy huge Disney fans with all the references.

I don’t agree with your rating Mat as it feels more like a 6/10 but I do get it. When it comes to Wish, I have seen it through early fan screenings and I thought it was okay. I’ll give it credit that voice acting were good, the animation while it has some issues looked nice, the songs despite sounds the same in feeling a bit popish were okay, some characters like Asha and Star for example can be enjoyable at times and I can see that the heart was in the right place, but the rest feels like it was completely hinders by the weak screenplay that makes it one of Disney weaker films in quite some time. The story feels too basic and safe, the script offers very little to add on the table, the pacing feels like it went on a little too fast, the supporting characters like Asha friends were underdeveloped, and it leans too heavily on the Easter eggs references to previous to the point that it ends up lacking some substance throughout. It basically the Mario movie but with Disney all over again where only the fans can appreciate but not for critics. I was really high in the hopes that Wish to be good and I really wanted to be great but I ended up walking out feeling disappointed with how Wish it turns given that it had potential. Guess that Once Upon a Studio short turns out be a better tribute than the movie itself right? Also, I should’ve even some red flags along way to know it won’t be good like review embargo on Friday, a few days before it came out, not playing the short in front of Wish, and some weak market strategy like the songs on weekly for example because if I haven’t, then I would’ve known that it not gonna be good. Finally as for award season goes, outside of getting a slot in for Best Original Song, with the mixed reviews it keeps getting at the point, it’ll not get nominated for Best Animated Feature even if it does well at the box office. I know some say it will but the reviews are so divisive at this point that it can’t get nominated. That leaves Across the Spiderverse Vs Boy and the Heron being the two direct competitors to win for Best Animated Feature, while the rest it a wild card where it could be anyone’s game right now. The one thing I will not looking forward is having another critics vs fans mentality that really should’ve die down especially of seeing fans spreading another toxic positivity like they did for the Mario movie. It just getting ridiculous right now as all the critics are doing is just doing their jobs and expressing their opinions. It doesn’t have to be bad but that is just their jobs. I’ll keep an eye out on how the fans are taking. For a movie that supposed to end strongly for it 100th anniversary, it didn’t do it justice.

Personally, I say "Critics what do they know!" (Outside of you of course) When It was coming out I knew that this was going to be very special for Disney and trying to make it a masterpiece like the classics already felt like it was too much pressure for it to reach. Certainly, I know it's not "Oscar-worthy" but I know that considering the references you know for a fact it's all made with love and really does make the picture seem worthwhile. I'll say Happy 100th Disney!

I agree with some of the others here. It isn't one of the best disney animated films out there but it's a very good one and I felt some of the critics lost a bit of nuance where if it's not one of the classics, it's immediately not worth it. It's still has a lot to appreciate for

Couldn't have said it better than myself, now here's wishing the box office will be kinder this weekend

Lady Tyler Bio Rodriguez

Definitely sounds like a mixed bag of a film and judging by the wide range of opinions. I'll have to see to judge.

Kenneth Stoddard

Critics do matter when it comes to how it’ll affect audiences over at the box office and especially award shows.

Alan Oliva

Yes, but do we really need them to say what is our favorite movie or what is not? It's what we consider to our own opinion that makes the decisions on the movies we watch.

I haven't seen the movie yet and after reading this and hearing Mat's review, I will give my opinion when I see it. But what you said about the marketing, I do think it could have been the problem where the marketing wasn't strong enough due to the strikes that could have crippled the promotion properly that and maybe if they couldn't have the time to go back and rerecord lines and rewrite some scenes. But that is just my assumption. Again, I will save that assumption until I see it given the time. But it is interesting to hear from both you and Mat. edit: And for your assumption for Oscar season I do agree that Spiderverse and Boy and the Heron are good contenders. Especially the latter since I went to Japan a couple of months ago and saw it (sadly there were no subtitles but I still got what the story was saying through its actions). We'll just have to see if Wish is good enough to make that roster.

Bryce Gundy

Even though I haven’t seen Wish yet, I’m with you on there. I feel like we’re now starting to get into an age where some movie critics are just making a big deal out of very little.

I know I am late on this review for the video, but I finally saw it. And, it was a 6 to a 7 out of 10. I was curious about this after seeing your review Mat, along with your friends such as Saberspark, Schraffrilis, and Cellspex. But after seeing the reviews and finally seeing the movie, I can see where the flaws are. I really can tell that the story was undercooked when it came to how Rosas was formed. You can tell something bad happened when you see a part of that partially burned tapestry from Magnifico's chambers. It doesn't tell us what happened or why and what purpose do the wishes cause that has Magnifico have an ego trip. I know it plays a nod to classic Disney storytelling with how there is a book and it tells us the story of these characters and how the story will go. It was the same case in Snow White, Pinocchio (to an extent thanks to Jiminy), Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Robin Hood. And even how it is set up as a prologue, when I compare this to Beauty and the Beast and Tangled, it did it way better than this as the prologue told us everything we need to know along with proper world building and motivation for our characters weather it be the Beast and Rapunzel to be free from their own imprisonment. Also the humor, I would have like to cut out a few lines as it wouldn't have been distracting. While also use the easter eggs sparingly because it does feel a bit unapologetic. When I compare it to Zootopia which had references from The Godfather, The Jersey Shore, and even Breaking Bad, it didn't do it by winking at the camera. It just used them sparingly and integrated it as part of the world. Also the music, is rather mixed for me. Now I know that they got people who are into pop songs rather than musical people. At first I was going to make a counter argument and defend it as Disney had Elton John for the Lion King. But then I remembered that they had a musical theater person in Tim Rice that helped with that aspect (face palm). Okay back to the songs, I do think they just don't flow into wanting to sing but just find a pause and then sing. And the lyrics, sure I know that it was a criticism I heard many times from other reviewers, but after seeing the movie, my god they were right. Now I have autism and sometimes I have a difficult time hearing when it comes to lyrics. But the difference, is that when I do hear a Disney animated movie, I can understand what the lyrics are saying and won't feel confused. But with Wish, I was just "what are they saying?" I could understand a few lyrics but have trouble understanding how some of them at times were a part of the action leaving me confused at times with the characters motivations or if it was necessary with certain song choices. I mean come on, during Magnifico's villain song, I heard a line that went like Jeans From Outerspace and I am going "What?" I just wished (ironic I know) that it could have been better. Like if it had more time to bake, no executive meddling. Just enough to make the film stand on its own without the references and we could have gotten something better. Okay time for some positives. I do think it had a nice message about finding the independence inside to make your own wish come true without how in the end it is all being decided by someone else to grant it for you. And I do think it had that aspect with the climax a bit well but a bit deus ex machima but not much as we see everyone stand up at the end. And even though the animation is not as groundbreaking levels like the Spiderverse movies, The Mitchel's vs The Machines, The Bad Guy's, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, or the new TMNT movie this year. I think it is still a good looking movie on an animation level. And that is it on the positives I can find. Disney really needs to step it up if they are now going to be 100.
