Last time I had an experience with Ratchet and Clank with the 2016 movie, it left a bad taste in my mouth. However, this review will have me revisit the franchise in it’s true form with the original PS2 Ratchet and Clank game. The duo may not be good movie stars, but in this review, I discover why Ratchet & Clank is among PlayStation’s best.

I have never played any of the ratchet clank games And I don’t think that this is how captain qwark acted in them, but I do remember you saying, in your review that you hated him. I actually did watch the movie on Netflix, and I can see why you hated the movie version of Captain Qwark.

It was a really fun review you made Mat! This game was a classic PlayStation franchise from Sly Cooper, Jax and Daxter, God of War and many more!

This was definitely a surprise, while I myself haven’t played any of the Ratchet and Clank games, I definitely understand why it has a fanbase and why it is a major franchise, and I’m very happy that you gave the franchise a second chance after your unpleasant experience with the 2016 movie.

I don’t blame you. That’s why I used the white Tanooki suit on a few levels of Super Mario 3D World for the Switch. I managed to get to the end.

Never thought I see the day of AniMat talking about Ratchet and Clank original game that came out from PS2 and am I happy that you played the game. Ratchet and Clank is know is one of PlayStation biggest gaming franchise and one of two biggest franchises alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man that came out from Insomniac Games. They’re so big to the point that the iconic duos are up there next to Mario and Luigi and Sonic and Tales to know popular they are in pop culture. The first game along with another PlayStation game Knack is what got me to play PlayStation games after playing Nintendo games like Mario for a long while now probably since high school and end up falling in love with the game and playing most of the game from the franchise since including the 2016 remake that is loose to the 2016 film which I’ll get into in a bit and the recent game Rift Apart which I find it to be one of the best Ratchet and Clank games out there. Anyways, back to the original game, I find it to be to be great as I played the remaster version on PS3 that get me started in playing. While I do agree that there was some issues which I admit were frustrating to play especially when it comes to the dying mechanic when facing against bosses particularly Chairman Drek as the final boss and the camera angle and the controller do mess me up a bit, but I can overlook pass that and say that it was fun to play. The story was exciting, the gameplay was fun along with playing and upgrading some cool gadgets and weapons, visuals while it may have age were intriguing especially with the world building, the humor was very funny, voice acting were great, and characters that were delightful to be with especially when it comes to the personality. By the when it comes Ratchet for the first game, this is the only time that Ratchet can be unlikable at times especially with with bad attitude and he does get better starting eight the second game and onward where his personality becomes a lot more likable, his temper has cool down a bit, and a more matured. They even replaced the actor, Mikey Kelley, for the first game in favor of James Arnold Taylor to help give him more flesh out with his personality and characterization and become one of James Arnold Taylor’s more iconic performances along side with his roles like Obi-Wan Kenobi for the Star War Clone War series both 3D and 2D. I did got an autograph from him last year in 2022 with the sign signature of Ratchet and Clank just so you know. Funny enough, both Ratchet actors end up playing Leonardo and Michelangelo for the 2007 animated film, TMNT. I mean how crazy is that despite that film sucked? Also, the story for each game do get better as they add in not just more action and gadgets, but more heart and more character driven for the Ratchet and Clank especially the former upon discovering what happened to his race, the Lombax. I give credit to the team at Insomniac Games in putting so much effort and heart upon each game they made as they are the Pixar Studios of video game industry. They even have an office in my home state in Durham, NC to do some work there which is awesome as North Carolinian myself. I really recommend playing the main games if you’re interested with the storyline of this franchise including you Mat if you ever get a PS5 or 4 depending how much further you can play with this franchise. Overall, while it does has some flaws, it a really fun great that I highly recommend if you want to get yourself invested with this franchise. For the 2016 film made by Gramercy Pictures and animated by Rainmaker Entertainment, to be honest, I was one of the few people that did see it in theaters when it came out and I didn’t enjoy it at all with how much a poor representation of this franchise including being too kid friendly at times. Sure the 2016 remake game that features scenes from the movie is much better to make things better when it comes to gameplay, but still that movie made such disservice to the games to the point that left me feeling disappointed. If they made a reboot version of it, I say give it to Sony Pictures Animation given with their track record recently so far including the Spiderverse films which they can make great animation and good storytelling on top of Sony Pictures going in making video game movie adaptations from PlayStation games like Uncharted and Gran Turismo although I find the latter to be a little better and even made The Last of Us series for HBO. The closest thing I can see these characters again on the big screen is just cameos on the PlayStation Productions logo and that pretty much it but I hope someday there is a chance that a Ratchet and Clank movie reboot will happen but with more proper care that actually respects to the source material. Crossing my fingers to happen.

Don't forget the Twisted Metal Series on Peacock. And the upcoming God of War series on Amazon Prime.

Now I have the games but I haven't played Ratchet and Clank that much. But I want to. I was still a Nintendo loyalist and I did get a PS2 and I had played some of its games. Now looking back I would say there was alot that I missed. But now that I am older and am looking to build those collections, I would say that this looks like a good opportunity to play them. But onto Ratchet and Clank, I feel like this series was part of what I would like to call the mascot trilogy of PS2. Where you have Insomniac Games with Ratchet and Clank, Naughty Dog with Jak and Daxter, and Sucker Punch Productions with the Sly Cooper series. Now I have played both other franchises and will say that they are worth playing along with Ratchet and Clank and are really worth it if a review comes up. I hope that I will upgrade a tier to recommend them. But anyways in the review you also mentioned that Naughty Dog were involved with the game in its development, it is because back in the early to mid 90's both Insomniac Games and Naughty Dog were still fledgling studios and as the video game craze was starting to kick up once we got to the 5th gen consoles like the N64, Sega Saturn, and Playstation, other companies (and I do mean some companies involved in film) would form their own subdivisions for making games like Disney, WB, and Universal. Which the latter was the place where both Naughty Dog and Insomniac ended up as Universal Interactive gave them the resources from their own studio and access to development kits from any company to make games on (weather being Nintendo with the 64 or Panisonic with the 3DO [which ironically Naughty Dog did make a game for that console being a Mortal Kombat clone called Way of the Warrior, and Insomniac was about to do the same with their first game being a Doom clone called Disruptor before the 3DO bommed and the developers abandoned ship]), that being the Playstation. It also helped that both studios shared the same game engine and collaborated together since they were under the same umbrella with Universal and Sony regarding making their games during Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon. So i am glad that you definitely see the difference between the movie and the original game as yes, the movie was not that good and the fans deserve better. Well we will see if Sony wants to try again and make a better Ratchet and Clank movie as I heard that there are talks about a Jak and Daxter movie in the works, thanks to Sony's new movie sub division Playstation Productions. I am just glad that Insomniac kept the spirit of the franchise alive and with their recent game Rift Apart.

Didn't expect a review early this week. Now tell you the truth I never really played the R&C games. When it comes to PlayStation 2 games, I consider playing many Tie-in games, whether from Pixar, LEGO, or Nickelodeon, Mostly SpongeBob-related. For original IPs, I once had PacMan games with "Mario-style" gameplay like "World" and Kart-races, and the most I played that could tie in with R&C are the Sly Cooper games. I used to play hard on those games until I reached 100% (Or at best 95%) and I still can find a lot of charm that I wished was made more for a movie. Like say they were like "The Bad Guys" in "Zootopia". In them, you have to learn how to steal, be sneaky, and fight out crime lords and mob bosses. While also avenging Sly's raccoon family from crooks who killed his father and stole his family's book. Always fun, though I never got to the 4th one and There has been no announcement of a 5th anytime soon since according to fans it has been left on a cliffhanger with Sly being lost in time.

Its a pretty good game. I personally think the best game is the third one but that's just me

I was more into the Tie-Ins, Movie & TV Based Games like SpongeBob or Spider-Man as well, and honestly I only played the Video Game Originals if they were a major franchise (Like Ratchet & Clank or Mario). I had a lot of fun playing the Ratchet & Clank games on my friends’ PS3s growing up, and honestly even though I haven’t played video games as much as I used to be, I still like the series.
