Daddy Jake: guess what
Me: What?
Daddy Jake: i got an A on my gov quiz
Me: No way!
Me: I guess that means you get a reward now. 😉
Daddy Jake: yea? what are u going to gibe me
Me: What do you want?
Daddy Jake: send me a pic
It’s been a little over a week since I started tutoring Jake, and even though we haven’t seen each other every day thanks to our schedules, he texts me all the time. Sometimes it’s just asking for help with homework or to reschedule our tutoring session for a later time when his practice runs late, but then, like right now, he’ll just text me to ask how I’m doing or to tell me about his day. It’s honestly really cute—almost like we’re boyfriends. I shake the impossible thought away and take a selfie of myself before sending it to him.
“Who are you texting?” Liam asks, frowning at me. “Do you have a secret best friend I don’t know about? Cause if you do, I’m throwing hands.”
A snort slips out while I chuckle. “No, you doofus. I only have one best friend. I just felt like taking a selfie. Besides, you of all people shouldn’t be throwing hands with anyone. You’re skinnier than I am, and that’s saying a lot.”
Liam pouts but doesn’t push it, even when my phone buzzes again.
Daddy Jake: u look cute but not the kind of pic i want 🍆😈
My face starts to warm, and I really hope Liam can’t tell. I feel bad for lying to him, but what the hell am I supposed to say to him? By the way, you know that cute jock I’m tutoring? Oh, yeah, I’m also fooling around with him even though I’ve made it explicitly clear that I don’t do jocks.
Me: Thanks, but I am NOT sending you a dick pick.
Daddy Jake: boo
Me: I’m sitting outside next to Liam!
Daddy Jake: fine then can you come meet me after practice
Me: What for?
Daddy Jake: for my reward
Daddy Jake: duh
Daddy Jake: sometimes u ask dumb questions for someone so smart
Me: Alright, Einstein, don’t get too cocky now.
Daddy Jake: u want my cocky
Daddy Jake: also what do bagels have to do with this
Me: Jeez, I know I call you Daddy, but that doesn’t mean you have to make dad jokes. 🤦🏻♂️
Daddy Jake: 😂😂😂
Daddy Jake: just come see me at the stadium
Me: Alright.
I put my back down to find Liam staring at me again with a smirk on his face. “Are you hooking up with someone?”
“What?” I sputter. “Of course not. Why would you think that?”
He fondly rolls his eyes at me. “Because you never smile like that when you’re texting a friend. In fact, the last time I saw you smile at your phone like that was when you were dating that asshole, Derek.”
I cringe at the mention of my ex and shut my laptop. “Well, I’m most definitely not talking to him.”
Liam purses his lips into a thin line. “Good, cause I wouldn’t have a choice but to throw hands with him if you were.”
I laugh, shaking my head. “Thanks, bro. No need to break those dainty little fingers of yours.”
He flicks me off, but there’s a smile on his face. “Fuck you, Ollie. We have the same dainty little fingers.”
###
Two hours later, I’m standing outside the locker room entrance at the stadium, waiting for Jake as a steady stream of his teammates pour out after their showers. Some of them do the typical bro nod in my direction when they see me, while others actually come over to say hi to me. It’s a little surreal that all these guys know who I am when not even a week ago, most of them didn’t even know I existed. When Jake first introduced me to them as his tutor, it was refreshing to see all these muscle heads be supportive of him, and to my surprise, some of them even asked about how they could get some extra help.
Thirty minutes later, the steady stream of football players stops, and it’s been long enough that worry starts to gnaw at me. What if he got injured during practice? Or what if he forgot about me and left before I even got here?
I’m about to call him when Ryan steps out of the locker room and grins. “Hey, you waiting for Jake?” I nod, bracing myself for the bad news. “Cool, he’s in there if you want to go in. Coach made him run some laps after practice because he was texting someone when he was supposed to be focused on gameplay.”
I breathe out a sigh of relief. “Oh, okay. Thanks!”
Ryan steps closer to me, lowering his voice after looking around to see if there’s anyone nearby. “You know, I’ve never seen him like this before.”
I blink, trying to understand what he’s getting at. “What—”
Ryan smiles. “You know, all distracted and shit.” I’m about to protest that it’s not my fault he keeps texting me, but he doesn’t give me the chance. “And I’m not saying it’s your fault. It’s good that he’s finally having some fun. I’ve been friends with him since middle school, and all he ever does is focus on football.”
I frown, clearly Jake told him about us fooling around. “But I thought he’s hooked up with lots of people before.”
Ryan nods, scratching at his chin. “Yeah, but that’s all that was—hookups. A lot of hookups. But he’s never had anything serious before.” My jaw drops at the implication. I want to tell him that it’s not serious. That this is just something to help Jake during the semester. But the words don’t materialize, so he just slaps me on the shoulder jovially. “You should go in there and give him a surprise. He’s the last one in there now, so no one will bother you guys.” He winks and starts backing away and then stops. “Oh, and tell Liam I said ‘hi.’”
I nod, but then something occurs to me, so I call out before he can leave. “Ryan!”
He stops, then walks back to me. “Yeah?”
I take a deep breath and ask the question that’s been nagging at me since I saw them at the library together. “When you say he’s had lots of hookups, were you one of them?”
Ryan chuckles. “Yeah, we traded blowies a couple of times when we were fourteen, but we never did anything after that.”
“Okay, good.” What the fuck? Why did I just say that?
Ryan laughs again but then gets serious. “Okay, my turn to ask. Have you and Liam ever done anything?”
I shake my head. “No… we kissed once in high school a few months after we first met. It just didn’t feel right with him, but we’ve been best friends ever since.
“Cool, good. Don’t forget to tell him I said ‘hi.’” He waves and jogs off, leaving me to digest what just happened.
I shake off the confusion and take Ryan’s advice to go inside the locker room. I’m met with the smell of sweat and deodorant, but also the most amazing sight my eyes have ever seen.
