Percy

I think I died and went to heaven. No, I’m sure I died and went to heaven because there’s no way that Asher’s kissing me right now. I almost want to pull away and pinch myself to see if this is really happening, but the way his lips mold to mine is the most incredible feeling in the world, and it doesn’t matter if this is all a dream—I’d stay here living this figment of my imagination for the rest of my life if it meant being with him.

But of course—whether they’re real or imaginary—good things never last. Because when Asher does finally pull away, there’s a look of pure horror on his face.

“Shit! Sorry, I don’t know why I did that. That was a mistake,” he says, jumping up from my bed and starts pacing while he fidgets with the cross around his neck. All I can do is watch helplessly as he flounders until he finally comes to a stop before me. “I should go.”

“Ash.” I stand up and try to reach for him, but he flinches like I’m some animal he needs to be careful with.

“No, Percy. I’m sorry, but I need to go.”

My pulse quickens, and the room starts to spin. This can’t be happening. He promised me that he would be here for me no matter what. I can’t lose him. But instead of giving him the space he needs, I pull him into me and crash our mouths together again.

This time, the kiss is all consuming and passionate. Despite his larger size, I pin him against my bedroom wall and cup his face with one hand while the other fists his shirt tightly. A tiny groan slips out of him, giving me the access I’m desperate for, and spear my tongue inside his mouth. The first caress of my tongue against his is like electricity shooting straight to my dick.

This time, we both groan, and I breathe him in like he’s the oxygen my lungs need to survive. Asher’s hands wrap around my waist, pulling me in closer until we’re both grinding against each other. His hard cock brushes against mine with far too many layers of clothing between us.

I try to slip my hand under his shirt to feel more of him, but my eagerness breaks the spell, and he wrenches free from my lips.

“No. Shit. Shit. Shit. Fuck!” A jumble of emotions roils across his face. “I can’t, Percy. I’m sorry. I can’t.”

And for the second time today, he flees, rushing out of my room and runs across my backyard until he’s over the fence.

This time, he doesn’t come back.

###

It’s almost three hours later when my bed dips under her weight and a soft hand runs through my hair, gently scratching at my scalp the same way she used to when I was little.

“Sweetheart, are you okay?” my mom asks softly. There’s concern in her voice. Concern that I haven’t heard from her since the divorce. And maybe if I pretend hard enough, it can be like the good old days, before everything went wrong. Maybe I can pretend that I’m seven years old again and Mom is doing her best to wake me up for school in the morning when all I want to do is play with Asher.

But I can’t.

I can’t pretend that I haven’t been crying in bed for the past three hours, hoping that he’ll call me. Hoping that somehow we could go back in time before my life blew up for the second time in my short eighteen years.

“Did you eat dinner, Percy?” Mom keeps running her hand through my hair.

“I’m not hungry,” I mumble, not bothering to turn around to look at her.

“Sweetheart, you need to eat something. You can’t go to sleep hungry.”

“What’s the point? Maybe I can starve to death. It’s not like anyone would miss me.”

“Percy,” she says sharply. Then, with a softer voice, she says, “Percy, please look at me.”

Reluctantly, I turn just my head, leaving the rest of my body in the same position, my stomach and chest flat against the mattress. “What, Mom? Why are you here?”

There’s a look of profound sadness in her eyes. “I’m sorry about what you’re going through. I know I haven’t been the best mother these past couple of years, but I want you to know that I will always love you, no matter what.”

I choke back a humorless laugh and sit up, pulling my knees to my chest and wrap my arms around my legs. “You’re not the first person to say that to me today.” I gesture towards the empty room. “But he abandoned me too, just like you will.”

Mom purses her lips. “Look, I can’t imagine what you’re going through, and knowing his father, I can only begin to guess at what this is doing to your friendship with Asher. But you have to have hope that things will be alright in the end. Things might be dark right now, but eventually, you’ll be standing in the sun again. Both of you. Together.”

My eyes snap to hers, and I can feel my heart going a million miles an hour. “How can you say that? How can you sit there and be so sure that everything will be alright when everything is falling apart?”

Mom takes my hands into hers, smiling like she knows something I don’t. “Because he loves you just as much as you love him. I’ve seen the way you two look at each other, and that’s something no one can fake or pretend. It might be hard at first, but I’m sure that in the end, it’ll be the two of you standing together.”

Mom’s words break me, and I fall into her arms and cry. I cry for a secret that I wasn’t ready to share with the world. I cry for a father who no longer wants me. I cry for a mom who’s here for me now when I need her most. I cry for the love of my life. I cry until I can’t cry anymore, falling asleep in the arms of the person who gave me life once but can’t anymore. There’s only one person who can do that now.

I know you're not supposed to bite the hand that feeds you, but that was way too short for as long as we've been waiting. 😜 I give you shit, but things aren't getting better for these guys yet. Any idea how many more chapters you have up your sleeve? Are you over your flu yet? That guy I know in Florida is on like his 10th day of being sick. He said he's pretty much down to frequent fits of severe coughing. I hope you've recovered faster than him.
