📜Lore
Nyxara found the book too easily.
She should have known something was wrong.
The moment her fingers touched the cover, the air around her thickened. The water in the sewers stirred unnaturally, as if something beneath it had begun to breathe.
Before she could pull back, it emerged.
Tentacles.
Dark, glistening, moving with an almost hypnotic grace. They wrapped around her wrists, her waist, her thighs — not violently, but firmly, as if studying her, learning her.
Nyxara tensed, trying to pull free, but the magic in the air slowed her. Every movement felt heavier, as though the space itself resisted her.
— No… — she hissed, gathering energy for a spell.
One of the tentacles slid higher, stopping just at her throat.
It did not tighten.
It waited.
As if offering a choice.
A strange tension crept through her — something between danger and… fascination. As if the creature did not want to destroy her, but draw her deeper. Keep her.
The realization came too late.
This was no ordinary beast.
It reacted to magic. To her.
The tentacles shifted, pulling her closer to the dark water.
And then—
A roar tore through the silence.
Kael.
He burst from the shadows with raw force, breaking the moment. His claws cut through the air, striking one of the tentacles.
The creature recoiled.
The grip vanished.
Nyxara fell onto the wet stone floor, gasping for air as Kael stepped between her and the thing.
For a moment longer, she could still feel the echo of its touch on her skin — unsettling, foreign… and strangely intense.
Then it was gone beneath the black water.
Kael didn’t speak at first.
He simply helped Nyxara to her feet, holding her steady as she swayed slightly. Her breathing slowly calmed, though a shadow of what she had just faced still lingered in her eyes.
— We’re going back, — he said quietly.
The walk to the tavern passed in silence.
The back room of the “Silver Bark” was warm and still — as if the outside world had paused for a moment.
Lyr was no longer asleep.
She sat on the bed, wrapped in a blanket, eyes half-lidded but alert. The moment the door opened, her gaze shifted toward them.
— I knew something would go wrong, — she murmured.
Her eyes lingered on Nyxara, then moved to Kael.
Without unnecessary questions, she stood and stepped closer, placing a hand on the mage’s shoulder.
— Sit. You’ll tell me everything.
Soon they were gathered at the table.
The food was simple — bread, meat, a bit of cheese — but it was enough. Nyxara spoke, sometimes pausing, sometimes falling quiet as fragments of the sewers returned to her mind.
Lyr listened carefully.
She didn’t interrupt. She didn’t judge.
Only once did she glance at Kael — brief, meaningful — as if checking whether he was truly alright.
When the story ended, silence settled between them.
Fatigue came all at once.
Nyxara lay down first, instinctively curling into Kael. He wrapped an arm around her without a word, pulling her closer.
Lyr sat beside them.
Leaning back against the wall, she drew her knees up and simply watched for a moment.
Them.
The calm returning after chaos.
The quiet closeness that needed no words.
After a while, she exhaled softly and closed her eyes.
— Next time… wait for each other, — she murmured.
No one answered.
They didn’t need to.
Outside, the night carried on.
Inside, there was peace.
For now.
