Hey guys!

I went a bit musically dark this month. Hahaha! Here's September's Patreon-voted cover for Daughter of the Sea from World of Warcraft.

This song took me by surprise. I originally planned to approach the arrangement like I usually do, with tons of vocals and layers, etc. But when I started practicing the song just with guitar and a lead vocal--without embellishments--it made the lyrics truly sink in for the first time and I was deeply moved.

I found myself taking on the challenge of finding a way to retain the build and emotional dynamics of the song with just the lead vocal performance and accompanying guitar.

Cristy and I filmed the video in a single take, camera handheld, and it was such a nice, refreshing thing to try.

I hope you enjoy this take on Daughter of the Sea! Thank you so much for watching.

Big hug from Mexico,Malu

PS: Extra points, and I will send you an official certificate for Expert Thor Snore Identifier, to the first person that can comment on the exact time at the very end of the song where there was a loud Thor snore... I decided to keep it. Hahaha! My boy 😍.

3:04, I think? Good for me for having my email open at the right time! :D

Damn! Awesome work Malu! It's not easy to pull so much richness from a pure acoustic arrangement, and you kicked butt! Great vocal work. They say the simplest forms are the hardest to master as there is nowhere to hide and you nailed it. *big clap*

malukah

Ha! Winner! :) I'll message you to confirm your address.

Patrik

A very beatiful song. (I think Thor can be heard at 03:05)

glumissek

I actually didn't like the song when I first heard the original. But this feels like a completely different thing. And I love it so much. I absolutely can imagine you sitting in a dark smokey bar on a wobbly stool and performing this. And the end +10 points just for Thor.

GregRauv

Bring the mead and the ale! :D

Letodan

I kinda felt like glumissek on that one. I think the way you did it gives the song a whole new energy. And may I say how I love when you go for a darker Malukah in the way you sing starting at around 2:00 up to 2:30. Dunno if darker is the right word but, you use the stronger side of your voice I feel and I love it!! Bring Death Metal Malukah out!!! ;-)

June Marie (CosmoDings)

I have to say, I absolutely love this format, both with the arrangement and the video. It made it feel both so personal and powerful. You made the song yours. Well done! <3

And that ending from 2:40... so emotional. Loved that Cristy moved back for that part. In my opinion, you have nothing to fear from going outside what you normally do. You went with your gut and the result is phenomenal!

Ok, now that I'm done Thor Snore hunting and have had a good...dozen listens or so...well, I guess I should start by saying that I'm not a World Of Warcraft person. I've seen the cinematic, but for something that people were making such a big deal over, I barely thought more than "Neat!" about a character I didn't really have any context for. With all that in mind, I think what your arrangement accomplishes is consolidating the entire narrative into Jaina's perspective. It makes the song much more interesting, and the "Beware of me" bit at the end much more haunting, when it's all coming from a single source, rather than a disembodied chorus singing about the character. I don't know if that was your intention, but regardless, it was really effective, and I find myself really intrigued!

Just singing whit a guitare you don't need more for making a beautiful song i really like that setup it make the song more natural i was not knowing that song but i have to Say that song is beautiful like allways you made an Amazing song nice job Malu ^_^ (that Thor snore at the end hahaha xD )

Christer Lind

Your version was great. I loved World of Warcraft and played it every day for hours but I don't remember this song. I still crossing my fingers for a Malukah version of "Lament of the Highborn" my definitely most loved and favorite song from World of Warcraft (And many of hours of listening to it from the soundtrack)

malukah

Thanks, Patrik! And yep, that's Thor's Snore right there. hahaha!

malukah

Ooooh, this is so cool to read! Thank you so much, Glumissek. I think I went through something similar, where the attachment I felt to this song when I first heard in, does not compare to the way it grew on me in this more acoustic setting. And I had that sensation of it turning into a different song the more I practiced it. Very strange. I don't think I've ever felt this before when making a cover. And thanks for the extra Thor points. hahahaha!

malukah

Darklukah FTW. hahaha! I'm glad you like this tone of voice. It's so nice to sing like this because there is absolutely no holding back. The core of the body is fully engaged, focused, and you just belt out air like a dragon. hahaha! :D It's a suuuuper fun feeling. Much more cathartic than a breathy sound, for example. Breathy can be soothing, for sure. But sometimes, having a moment of feeling full strength can be soothing, too. This is what happened when I was working on this. Death Metal is next!!! hahahahaha!

malukah

Thanks for listening, Ralf!!!! <3

malukah

Yaaaaaay! I'm so happy to know that you liked the approach. Thank you so much. <3 And I confess, I now feel the song IS MY PRECIOUUUUS even though I didn't write it. hahaha! But it definitely grew on me so much! <3

malukah

Aaaah, yes, I think Cristy's instincts on this were spot on. We did several taken with a tripod. And they were ok. But felt flat. Then we tried one handheld (but with a steadycam contraption to keep movement not dizzying. We watched it back on the computer and were both like, "Oh, yes. This is the way." hahaha! Then we shot a 2nd take like this and that's what we called final. :D It was so cool!

malukah

Hahahaha! It made me laugh that the first listen was a deep dive into finding the Thor Snore. hahahaha! :D Thank you so much, Thalandor! And it's funny, when explaining to Omi what I hoped to do with the song, I mentioned precisely that the song without any other vocals felt more focused and personal. More determined. And I think you describe the original in a super interesting way as a "disembodied chorus"... because I thiiiiink this is in part what made it tricky to "feel" the song at first. There are so many voices involved in the track that it becomes more like a lively tavern song than a true melancholy story. Super, super happy you felt intrigued. Thanks again!

malukah

Hi, Yann! Thank you so muuuuuch! I'm glad you like the idea of just a guitar and voice. I do agree it definitely makes it feel more natural! :D

malukah

Lament is such a classic! I do hope to cover it someday not too far in the future. This Jaina song is from an animated short from one of the newer expansions, so that may be why it might have appeared after you left the game maybe? I'm so happy you liked this version! Thank you!

malukah

Thank you so very much, Ninja Wasabie! :D

Letodan

Well, never hesitate to go to those cathartic emotion in songs Malukah!! Your voice is certainly able to go there and it's always awesome to hear you like that!! I want more!! 🥰

firjii

I’d never heard this song before now but it’s a great choice for your kind of voice <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3. And I don’t know how to explain it but it looks like you had more fun than usual in the video (maybe just because there weren’t multiple cameras/takes to deal with?). I definitely see those “bard in a pub” vibes you mentioned!

Richard Glidden

Wow. I was honestly not that excited about this song when it won the vote. But I absolutely love your take on it! I LOOOOOOVE the section from 2:00 to 2:30 or so where you just let loose and belt out the lyrics. It's so different from your usual approach, but it really brings out the beautiful low tones and richness of your voice. I really like the way you did the video too. I definitely got the "bard in a pub" vibes from it. It also reminds me of the very first video on your channel, "Malu canta Skyrim", because of how simple it is - just a girl with a guitar and a beautiful voice. It's amazing going back to watch that old video now and seeing how far you've come. This video sort of brings it back full circle for me.

TM599

Beautiful <3

I did the download version first. I listened and loved it! Then I watched and listened to this one and it was such an added layer. I really got the story of the Daughter leading the Father away from the homeland only to be ambushed and attacked and defeated. Treachery, deceit, and major family dysfunction! What more could you ask for? I got the end - "Beware of Me!" Almost a shiver down the spine. Absolutely brilliant This has got to be the best take on this song yet. Well done.

mdkmr2

Amazing! I enjoyed it. 😊
