Malukast Episode 1

You guys are my test group.

I've been thinking about this for ages, and decided to follow your advice from the last Patreon exclusive stream to "just hit record and start talking". hahaha.

Don't know if I'll publish this publicly, but I feel butterflies in my stomach.  Butterflies are pretty, so it's a good sign, no?

Thank you for listening,

Malu

PS: I have not made a post on my website because this is still just available here. ❤️

PS2: Need to figure out how to minimize breath sound. Maybe mic placement? Tried a gate and it was too obvious and choppy. If anyone has any podcast experience, heeeelp. Thanks

Listening...

Chris Mahan

That was very good. Thank you for sharing! Hope your injury heals fast and you can write again soon!

Joshua Boulanger

Thank you for sharing just a small bit of your everyday life. I enjoyed listening and I can totally relate to both your isolation from parenting and your realization that some things happen because of chance opportunity. If recording this has helped you in any way I hope you'll continue.

Joshua Boulanger

Regarding the breathiness I didn't really notice much listing on my phone. When I've had to record things I use a windscreen in front of my mic and that helps quite a bit

Ernie Hannaford

Hi Malu, Thank you for expressing your real feelings. It is something I have always admired about you. You are real and experience the every day issues that everyone else has but you are not afraid to admit it. Sometimes it is not easy to find a balance in our lives, and how to find that happiness. I am not sure what to tell you to make yourself whole again or even how to deal with these feelings. For myself though, when I need an escape or just time to decompress, I grab a nice hot tea, sit outside and listen to or watch the birds. I stare at the flowers and just let my mind roam free in the moment. It always helps to destress my state of mind at the moment. Again , thank you for sharing this and expressing yourself =)

John Quinn

I have to imagine what you're describing comes with being a creator / entertainer. Not easy! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Adam Kröger

Not hearing breath very much compared to many podcasts I follow. (Checked on both phone speaker and studio headphones) You can put on a noise reduction filter, but sometimes that can get a little weird with the artificial noise floor in my opinion. Could also play with EQ to focus on your voice's range.

Martin J

Listening to your speaking voice is a different experience, but just as pleasant and soothing to listen to as your singing. Like others have noted, your breath is not very noticeable and overall, your recording sounds just as good as any other podcast I listen to. Also, what you are talking about, your experiences and feelings, is both interesting and entertaining enough for me to definitely subscribe to. Best of luck figuring everything out, just take one thing at a time.

Peter Worrell

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and feelings with the community Malu! I totally get not having time to read like we should. I am subscribed to probably ten daily devotionals, I keep subscribing because I really want to study God's Word but then I never have the time in my day to read them all! Ha! Anyway, my third child is now ten years old and with all of my kids, every day had it's own challenges and rewards. It was rare when everything felt 'right' but it was usually when my prayer life is going well. Just a thought. Works for me. I really enjoy being able to hear your thoughts while working here at home and I am looking forward to more in the future. Praying for your speedy recovery! Peace and joy be with you and yours!

Letodan

That was very interesting! Yes, you are a part of my world Malu!!!! :-)

Thalandor46

I'm personally not really a podcast person to begin with, so keep that grain of salt in mind with this comment. I generally find the space oversaturated, and a lot of the content to be both obnoxiously long and typically not very engaging. So if you were trying to set out to find your place in the wide world of podcasts, I'd probably lose interest pretty quickly. BUT, in the context you present here, doing something for yourself and for the sake of yourself, not chasing after success or followers or profit or whatever, I think that's a lot more interesting and something I could potentially get into! Regardless, I sincerely hope it helps you find what you're looking for, whether that's the podcast itself or whatever results from it.

Talon24

Helloo, I'd say the quality is great, also imho the breathing is nothing to worry about, it's at a normal level and when there's no breating, speech can start to feel uncanny, that doesn't happen here. Generally good voice quality! Though, I'd put some reseach into advancements of audio file names, looking at 1.mp3 :maluLol:

Linda Rawenna Strandberg

Sorry to hear that you are injured, hope you recover fast. I am a reader so i would read your blog, but i get most don't have time to slow down and read any more. I loved your first episode of your podcast and hearing your thoughts. Regarding music platform instead of youtube, maybe talk to Peter Hollens? i know he has been working on something, not sure what. Regarding cleaning, maybe hire someone to clean for you? If you need someone to just talk to, you have us, and we are always here to listen. I am always here to listen :) Sometimes just talking to someone can give you a perspective on things. Much love and many many hugs to you Malu :)

Eric F

i actually cherish any breathiness you give me. To me it gives warmth and depth and soul. It's not even close to the realm of being distracting for me. It gives the feeling of being more live and being more intimate, feeling like you're in the room.

Nephilim1977

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I can attest that sometimes you just need to vocalize things that bother you. To tell someone about them. Not only can someone perhaps offer advice, but just saying something out loud can help putting things in perspective. So yeah keep on doing it :) Use us as a soundboard.

Tim Kirby

I like the idea of you making a malukast lol. It takes a lot of courage to tell others how you feel (been trying my hardest to do so for about 25 years now) so this is really great to hear from you. Also it will give me someone else to listen to at work so yeah im down.

Andrew Livecchi

I thought that was really nice! And as long as you're happy and enjoying it, I say go for it!

Richard Glidden

Thank you for sharing this, Malu. It takes a huge amount of courage to share your feelings with the world, particularly when those feelings are of loneliness, being stuck, and feeling disconnected. I felt the same way after both of my kids were born. Having a child is such a huge change in priorities and literally turns every aspect of your life upside down. Like you said, even simple things like "Do I have a shower? call a friend? make lunch? record something?" become so difficult when you only get an hour or so - if you're lucky - while the kid is occupied. I don't really have any advice for you here. Just that as they grow up, things do get better. A lot better. And you are not alone in feeling this way. Some of the changes my wife and I made around the same time in our journey were to first let things go. Our house is constantly messy. With younger kids, it was nearly impossible to keep everything clean and tidy. So we gave up on the "tidy" part, and just focused on the "clean" part. Video Gaming was very important to me. Sleep less so. So I sacrificed a bit of sleep to get a bit of gaming time. We figured out what was really important to us and what wasn't, and let the things that weren't as important slide, or let go of them completely. Second, we hired help where we could. We hired people to cut the grass and shovel snow off the driveway. We eventually hired someone to clean. Find ways to have fewer things to do yourself, so you can focus on the things you want to focus on. It's still tough. But it makes things a little easier. As for social media, a few other creators that I follow have secondary, more "personal" accounts set up where they can be free of feeling like it's affecting their "brand". If people are interested in mundane things you'd like to share, they can sign up to follow those accounts. They know what they're getting into. You still get an outlet to share as much or as little of your personal life as you want without affecting your "marketing" accounts. Use a different name even, if that helps separate things. I personally loved the podcast. I really appreciate hearing your thoughts and feelings and understanding how you're doing. I thought the "breathiness" was fine. It made it sound more like an intimate conversation and less like a radio broadcast to have a few breaths and things. I wouldn't change anything. As for being unbalanced, I usually try to take a step back, figure out what it is that is truly bothering me, then see what I can do to start making things better. You can't always fix everything at once. But just finding one or two small things and making some improvement helps. They add up over time. If you're ever feeling disconnected or lonely, and want to talk or just share some silly little thing, I'm always happy to listen. Your music was there for me when I needed it the most. I'm happy to return the favour however I can.

Orchaldor

Hey Malu, this turned out to be unexpectedly beautiful. The feelings you express so well are ones that I have seen a lot of recently, both in my work as a community pharmacist but also in my own life. As for the technical stuff… I’m no technician, but in my opinion don’t change anything. With my headphones on it’s like talking (well, listening!) to someone sitting next to me. You sound so natural, it gives your words a real honesty - no sales, no commercials, no agendas. Just Malu.

K.P.

It's a little funny to me; the different perspectives on reading vs. podcasts. For me, most podcasts I cannot listen to while doing other things, while blog-posts I can get through easily. You've a good cadence to your voice and like others I didn't hear a lot of out of place breath sounds. (listening on headphones). You're very right about the isolation of parenting. It's a very weird feeling at times. Thank you for sharing such a candid podcast. I quite enjoyed it personally, would love to hear more podcasts. And, I hope your injury heals swiftly.

luckyy

Wonderful format, you have a beautiful voice and it's wonderful to listen to, in music or podcast format! If we can help you feel more connected to the world from this format, we're here for it! Felt like we were sitting in your living room have a nice discussion over tea.

Rooney

Enjoyed listening very much :).

Thijs Bos

Hey Malu, sounds like you are figuring out quite a bit. I have no kids so I can't wait help you there, but from the rest of it, it seems like you need something to bring some joy in your work/world. And if this is it, then go for it! I'll listen for sure. :)

Mikael Lindberg

I have never listened to a podcast before in my life… before yesterday, that is! And I will definitely keep listening to your episodes, if you keep making them, I really enjoyed this first one. What have you done to me?? (joking of course - keep it up if you enjoy it, it was great!) I can’t provide any insight into parenthood as I have no experience with it, but I sincerely hope for a speedy recovery. You’re awesome, I think everyone here can agree to that! :)

Bable Zmith

I just love listening to the timbre and smooth quality of your voice. Please keep it up. Especially if it helps. :)

Marcos J Duran

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I enjoy the format and think if it is something you want to continue, it would be welcome here. As to feeling out of sync and a little "wrong", I think that's a common thing right now. We'll all trying to figure out what the new normal is and even accepting that there IS a new normal. So one thing I would suggest is for you to be gentle with yourself. I know the unknown is difficult to deal with. Know that you are not alone.

Llynya

Thank you for sharing and I wish you a quick recovery. I never had the patience to listen to podcasts and prefer to read text in my own tempo, but I enjoyed this pretty much. Maybe it‘s the honesty, the relatable things. Anyways feel free to keep it up. As others already said we‘ll listen. Sometimes small things are helping to feel better. The important part is to write them down, if you‘re better. Then you can look them up and remember in that times, while the brain might be weazeling too much. Take care! :)

Sean Meibers

Hi Malukah, thank you for sharing and sorry to hear about the injuries and I hope you have a speedy recovery, I can definitely relate to the benefits of handwriting a journal and what it's done to help me. The listlessness in life is something I've been struggling with too. I'm frustrated at my job because I don't feel like it's affording me opportunities to grow and challenge myself but I don't want to leave it as I'm ten years away from getting a pension out of it. I've tried to find little hobbies and such outside of work to help and it does sometimes but at the same time it's hard spending 8+ hours of my day doing something that feels like running in place. I wish I had more to say, I think some other comments have offered good advice. I'm just kinda in an endure mode and hoping that a few weeks or months will see my perspective change which isn't a very proactive way to approach thing. Regarding the podcast, I enjoyed it and I think taking up some new mediums could help you. My friends and I started one two years ago and minus the frustrations of of struggling to get it to get anything of a following it has been an enjoyable hobby and has taught me some. Regarding the breathing sounds, they definitely weren't very noticable and I've listened to podcast with ones that were much more so. I regrettable don't do the audio engineering for my podcast but I reached out to my friend who does as I know he did something to cover up my heavy breathing. Take care, Sean

I remember finding your Morrowind cover, and I was SOOO excited to find a female gamer who knew Morrowind. Social media marketing is so .... sticky. I am very hesitant to get involved. I have commitment issues and once I obligated myself- I'll drive myself crazy to keep up. I admire the amount of effort must you have to keep pushing to keep this up with all of it as long as you have. (Especially with growing a family) I don't know if I could do it. I enjoyed this podcast, I listened while I made my kiddos breakfast. It was nice, I felt like I was having a conversation with an adult. 🤣 (not that my kids aren't great conversationalists, I just only can talk so much about Bluey and poop) Love and health to you and your's.

Paula

Wow. Okay, two things. 1. I think podcast is a great idea - nowadays it's definitely easier then reading, I agree 😂 And also, I love listening to your voice, therefore I think this could be your medium 😊 2. About the topic - almost exactly the same is happening to me right now 😂 I don't have a kid, but - I also think that so far, my life was kinda opening different doors for me and things were just "happening". And for the last 3 years now, I'm kind of stuck... Like you said - not terrible, but just not 100% happy/satisfied and not really knowing what to do with yourself in order to fix it. Same goes for the lonely topic, just that it with corona probably got worse anyway 🙁... Anyway, long story short, I just wanna tell you that I understand you and would love if you would continue those podcasts and discuss your thoughts on those topics 😄 Greetings from Germany 🤗

malukah

I'll try this for the next one! Thank you!!!

malukah

Thanks for listening and responding, Joshua! <3

malukah

This sounds lovely. I remember I used to drink my coffee outside (while Thor peed hahaha) and had a calm moment. I need to do that again! These days, I just open the door for Thorpy and let him out. He barks, I let him in. Must make time for those quiet moments. Thank you, Ernie! ❤️

malukah

Thanks for listening, John! :D

malukah

Hey Adam! I'm glad you felt the breath was within normal range. I did try EQ, but it sounded strange. Maybe it's a matter of learning how to approach that particular issue with EQ, but if it seems to be fine like this, I'd rather just leave it as it is for now! Thanks for listening!

malukah

Hi Martin! Thank you so much for listening! And I'm so happy that it was a pleasant experience listening. I'll continue with this podcast and see where we end up hehehe!

malukah

Thank you so much for sharing your insight on this, Peter! I can definitely understand subscribing to many things and not getting to read/hear any of them. hehehe! Peace and joy to you and yours, as well!

malukah

Part of youuuuuuuur.... (dramatic pause) ♪♫♪♬ Woooooooorld ♪♫♪♬

malukah

Hey Thalandor64 (Just kidding... hehe) Yeeees. I feel this, too. That the podcasting world does seem oversaturated. This kind of environment always seems to dissuade me from even trying, BUUUTTT. I really do mean for this to be more about reflecting, and maybe keeping a record of this time of my life... what I'm feeling, thinking. And of course, I learned how to think thanks to Skillshare. Skillshare, guys, is an amazing platform--- hahahaha :D

malukah

Hahaha! ;D Must research that. Thanks for listening Talon! :D

malukah

Many hugs back to you, Linda! :D Thank you. I actually just spoke to Peter about something else.... suspeeeeense. You must wait for episode 222222222 (two with excitement, not 2billion)

malukah

Exactly! Just speaking things out loud makes them a bit more manageable! Or seem less scary. Thanks for listening!

malukah

Perfect. Thank you, Tim Kiiiirby!

malukah

Will do! Thank you Andreeeew!

malukah

Thank you so much for your message, Richard. It really, really helped. It gave me lots of hope to hear that things (as far as time) will get better and better, and that it's a good idea to let whatever doesn't matter... just go. Focus on clean, not tidy. This seems more possible hahaha! Sometimes, when Dante stops paying attention to a toy, I go and start picking up. Putting the blocks back in the box etc, and he runs over to once again take them all out. Like it's suddenly his most favorite toy in the world again. hahahaha! :D And the advice about finding a couple of small things to work on helped at all. I'll share more in Episode 2. Thanks again for always being here! Malu

malukah

I'm glad the recording sounded natural! :D And even more glad that you enjoyed the episode. Thank you for listening and for sharing that you face some of these things, as well!

malukah

Hi, K.P.! Thank you so much for listening! This isolation is a weird feeling for sure some times. And about listening to podcasts, I would love love looove to be able to listen to more, but since I'm working on music, I can't really hear anything else, either. I'm so happy you liked this. Thanks for encouraging me to continue!

malukah

Thank you, Brynleaaaa! Yeah, it's definitely good to try new stuff. To actually DO it, not just think about it. It's completely different once you actually do sit down and get through the experience of doing something. And it's the only way to move forward... to either continue or discard a direction. I'll keep you guys posted on the cleaning and organizing hahaha! Noticed a couple of things I want to mention in Ep 2

malukah

Yaaaaay! That's awesome. Thank you, Luckyy!

malukah

THIS. This is very true. I need to find something that brings joy (without pressure of it being a job, etc) Thanks for listening, Thijs!

malukah

Thank you so much for listening, Mikael! I'm happy you enjoyed listening to your very first podcast! hehehehe!

malukah

Thank you so much, Bable! ❤️

malukah

Thank you, Marcos. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yes. I think this adjusting to a new normal has been rough on all of us, for sure!

malukah

Llynya, thank you so muuuuuch! ❤️ It means a lot that you took a moment to listen and to write back.

malukah

Seaaaan. Thank you so much for listening. It's cool you were able to start a podcast with friends! It's a tough call about your job, that you are not super thrilled with it, but that you have the possibility of pension for the future. Darn adulthood. It's annoying sometimes. I'm hoping that things get better, or that you find some way to complement things so that you get a bit more joy than the feeling of running in place. ❤️ Hugs to you!

malukah

Yeeeeeees. hahahahahaha! Bluey and poop. I laughed at that. Dante isn't interested in Bluey yet (he's still at the Cocomelon stage), but he can say poop in spanish. "Popó" hahahahahahaha! I'm glad you were able to listen while cooking. ❤️ Thank you for writing!

malukah

Hi Paula! Greetings back from Mexico :D Thank you so much for listening and for taking a moment to write. Although I wish you weren't going through something similar, it does feel somewhat comforting that we're at least in this together. And hopefully we can figure out a way back to movement and leave the "stuck" feeling behind! I send you many hugs!

malukah

I shall try this in the next episode, Norman! Thank you! And I'm glad you liked the podcast (and voice!) ❤️

Thalandor46

Just wanted to share that this response made me laugh 3 times over 🤣🤣🤣❤️

Trogboar

The podcasts are a win-win. If you enjoy making them, then you win because you get to do something you enjoy and that is helpful to you. We enjoy it because: 1) You are relatable and approachable. You have a real community of fans who actually care about you and how you are doing. Most music and entertainment creators hold no importance to their consumers outside of the content they create. I think I speak for most of us is saying that if we lived in your vicinity, we would like to be your friend. Not just the friend of the "YouTube singing sensation", but with Malukah the person. 2) Your voice is pleasant on the ears. 3) You are emotionally honest. Most blogs just show the face they want the world to see. You feel genuine. You show us a real person with real struggles that we can relate to and identify with.

TheAlb

Thank you for sharing. Sorry it has taken me a while.,but I lost my initial post and was trying to figure out what I wanted to say (to the letter :z). Potcast and written blogs .. one thing that I increasing found during work in the last year with not being able to just walk over to a colleague and ask a question is that I spend way more time writing emails and making sure that I covered everything as it harder to do a "back and forth" I spend more time on the actual writing the email then getting / giving answers. Queue in the video call :) I think the "feeling out of alignment" seems not uncommon at the moment (at least to me). Kind of feel like that to some degree with how things go at this stage. I used to know what I want, not in great detail or plans or step by step guids, but in brought strokes. I "blame" work, but in the end it is down to me to sort things out. The one thing that always feels like puts you in a good place is experimenting, trying things out and seeing how it sounds etc. At least that is the impressions I got from e.g your office hours, music videos etc. Sometimes It feels like for the "sake of experimenting" or just as you said "doing it for fun". I hope that you find a place / moment etc. for a "cosy cabine" moment to find some time for yourself. I hope that doing this potcast helps you (and seeing that ep2 and ep3 are out it does).

Lilipyu

Oops! It took me almost 3 weeks to find enough peace and quiet to listen to this without getting derailed. I love it! It's very calm and relaxing to listen to. As you know we're in the same boat. I love Maximilian and I love being a mother but I recognize the feeling of being kind of disconnected.
