I love that technology allows us to slow music down. Hehe! This is one of the ways it helps me. Dear native German speakers, I hope this isn't too painful.

Timothy Wolcott Jr.

My first year here in Alaska (7 years ago), I coached a senior on "Der Holle Rache" from Mozart's "The Magic Flute." She ended up winning our regional competition and then going on to win the state competition as well. I could help with the music, of course, but not the German. Luckily, we had a teacher at our school who took German courses in college "for fun" (lol) and helped her with all the diction. She just graduated from college with a degree in Opera performance!

Inaala Nailo (Ina)

I'm in hospital recovering from surgery, this definitely cheered me up. Thank you malu

malukah

Hey Thomas!!! I hope your recovery is a very quick one! Get well soon! Big hug and thanks for watching :D

malukah

This is so great! The Magic Flute was the very first opera that I listened to from start to finish. I remember I bought this tiny book that had bits of the text and score from it. Like a walkthrough. I'll see if I can find it and show it in a vid.. Hehe! It's awesome to hear your student graduated with a degree in Opera! :D And good of you and the teacher familiar with German to help her!

malukah

Holy cow, this article is amazing! And she sang Pocahontas in the 5th grade! :D Loved reading about the origin of her name and how it helped preserve a memory. :D How on earth did you end up moving to Alaska to be a music teacher? Did a school there reach out to you? I'm so curiouuuuus!

Timothy Wolcott Jr.

Well, I was raised in Western NY, Buffalo/Niagara Falls area. Long story short, my first teaching gig was in Cuba, NY for two years before they had to cut one music teacher due to budget....me, because I was the new guy. I spent a year looking for a new position in the state...lots of interviews, no offers. So, I decided to leave the state and ended up in rural Alaska, off the road system, on the west coast. I fell in love with the community and have been here ever since. We are one of the few bush locations with a music program.

Heidi

Haha, German sounds like a difficult language to speak. Sometimes sounds like English but mostly not :P Had kind of a crappy day but this made it a lot better :) I'll see the first part of your concert next Monday, wish I could stay the whole time. And hello Thor :) (he walked by a few times in the background).

malukah

I'm sorry to hear you had a bit of a crappy day! Those can be annoying. Hope tomorrow is better, Heidi! And making this video made me realize how much Thor moves around while I am working. Hahaha! :D It will be great if you can drop by the concert. We'll just have to repeat it later on a day you can watch it all :D

malukah

This is incredible. And incredible of you to go there to teach. What a gift for the community. And I'm sure they are in turn a gift to you. If you ever have a picture or two of where you live that you can share, please do!

James Stuart

German can be a bit difficult to learn. I had 4 years in high school of it. Never considered myself fluent, but I did okay. Haven't really spoken it since but I still remember how to count and the alphabet and a few children songs. I enjoy hearing it again and you seem to be picking it up fairly quickly. Brava

SnipiWolf

As an non native english speaker I can tell you german is easier to read than english(, you need some practice and when you know a syllable it will always be the same (pretty much). That let you read things correctly but you don't even understand what you could possibly say. Now i remember my awfull german lesson ten years ago ^^ Good luck with this one and have a nice day.

eon

Oh my! Amazing, and good luck with learning it. I've been trying to get a hang of German and Dutch (and Spanish, but that one.. is on hiatus now) and as a Finnish speaker I find it r e a l l y hard to switch from my monotone vowel-rich language to something with "scht" and "rsch" sounds 😂 Dutch is not so bad though. Anyhow, now that you've gotten into German can you consider playing "Diese kalte Nacht" by Faun? I think it would sound amazing were you to sing it :o

Ninchen

Who'd have thunk German is so diffcult? It always seems so easy to me ;) You're doing a good job!

malukah

Hahahaha! :D It's amazing for me to imagine that people who grow up in Germany automatically get used to the particular sounds of the language without much struggle. For me... hahaha I can't!!!! Heeeelp! hahaha

malukah

Yes! the syllable approach is something my teacher suggested. :D And it definitely helps to get used to the words little by little! :D Thanks for watching, Piet!

malukah

Oh, wow! Thank you so much for recommending this band. I immediately had chills listening to this song. BEAUTIFUUUUUL! Wow, wow, wow love it. :D Good luck with your German and Dutch practice, Elina! :D

malukah

Thank you, SnipiWolf! I am starting to become familiar with certain syllables that definitely do sound the same always. :D But, I still get a bit confused. hehehe!

malukah

Oooh, I should look for some children songs to learn. I think Colors of the Wind was a bit of an ambitious start. hehehehe! :D So cool you got to study German in school!

eon

Glad you like it! (You might also like Omnia, Adrian von Ziegler and Elane) And thank you, I do hope I have luck with them!

Lucinda Schlather

Malukah, do you know IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet)? If you're learning different languages, this alphabet can work wonders, since each letter has only ONE sound. You write exactly what you're hearing, no matter what language you're using. If you're not familiar with it, try http://www.internationalphoneticalphabet.org/. It can really make a difference when you're reading a different language out loud. ;)

malukah

Ooooh, this is incredible. Thank you for the link. I'm sure it will be very useful!!!! :D Holy cow, I could spend days just looking over all the info trying to pronounce each sound. ehehehe! :D Love it!

malukah

Added to the list! :D Are you feeling better, Elina?

malukah

Super sweet song! I have bookmarked it. Ooooh, I have plans for this. One of my best friends from Monterrey is living with her husband in Germany and they just had a baby. I want to see if I can record this for them! hehehe! Thank you, James!

eon

Yes, I am, thank you for asking. It only lasted for a day and then some and to be honest it was beneficial in the end, since I had nothing else to do than schoolwork. I will soon have finished my last course in high school, so thanks, stomach flu.

malukah

Haha! That is a FANTASTIC way to look at it. :D I'm glad you're better!

Paul Jephson

Mulakh!! What makes you think that it does Viking? Sorry spelt ya bane wrong, its just so complex hahaha look me up when ya can afford to travel to New Zealand ok :)

Nemonix

Haha, I can't wait to hear it :D But it sounds good so far, for you haven't really tried german except that part of Silent Nights :D I hope your tongue and voice will not ended up twisted after so much practice :P Hugs back to you ^-^

James Stuart

You are so very welcome Malu!

malukah

I was so proud to get an 8/10 haahahaha! MUST WORK HARDER! Thanks for watching the stream yesterday, Nemo!

malukah

I always misspell my name like this "mlau" hahaha! :D

Nemonix

I also have to thank! For that lovely lullaby, I've slept like a baby :D <3 Do you have already plans for a next german song? :P

malukah

Hehe! I think I have to continue practicing Colors of the Wind for now so that I work on pronunciation before moving on to the next one! Glad you liked the lullaby! :D
