Background

For generations the Titan’s Lighthouse has kept the trade and fishing vessels safe when they return to port, guiding them away from the danger of the rocks and surging currents. However, in the last few months there have been more shipwrecks than in the preceding 20 years. The trail from the town to the lighthouse is dangerous, and no one has seen the Lightkeeper family for a while, so the locals are seeking adventurers to investigate. The light still comes on every night, but sometimes there is a strangeness to it’s colour.

Lucon Lightkeeper, the current steward of the lighthouse has a wife and two children, but upon arrival at the tower there is no sign of any of them. The lower quarters seem largely abandoned, aside from a few scraps of half eaten uncooked food. Upon further investigation they find Lucon in his workshop above. Like his predecessors he is a gifted artificer, a necessary skill set to keep the crystal glowing, but he currently seems deranged and half starved, fiddling with a series of smaller crystals and instruments on his desk.

From the confused mutterings of Lucon, the party can grasp some of what happened. 6 months ago, Lucon’s highborn wife decided she could no longer stand to live in isolation at the lighthouse, Lucon was spending all of his time in his workshop and she was lonely and missing her home. She took the children on a ship and left. Since then his only focus has been trying to get her to return, but having no means of communication with her he turned to the skills he has available.

He has been experimenting with changing the magics in the lighthouse crystal, instead of spells for light, warning & repulsion he has infused the crystal with charms of attraction, hoping that her ship might pass nearby and be compelled to return to him. However, he has only succeeded in destroying many of the other vessels that use the nearby port and rely on the lighthouse, and it seems the charm magic is also slowly eating into his own mind. The crystal itself now holds some kind of power over him and he cannot leave it, even bringing it gifts and treasures from the wrecked ships, but it is never satiated.

Design Notes

Arcane Lighthouse 01 – Cellar

  • 01 – Storage area – Stacks of commonly used items, tools and dried foods.
  • 02 – Tunnel – Leads to the cliffs and a view of the ocean. Perceptive characters may notice a breeze coming from this area. Alternate route in for sneaky types.
  • 03 – Stairs – Leads up to 04

Arcane Lighthouse 02 – Living Quarters

  • 04 – Stairs – Leads down to 03
  • 05 – Entrance Lobby
  • 06 – Stairs – Leads up to 12
  • 07 – Living Space – A small kitchen, sitting and dining area lit and warmed by a large fire
  • 08 – Master Bedroom – Small and cramped. A single chest for clothes. It seems only one person uses the bed.
  • 09 – Children’s Bedroom – Two small beds and a chest of toys. The beds don’t appear to have been slept in recently.
  • 10 – Stone Titans – Two 80ft tall stone statues hold up the top level of the lighthouse.
  • 11 – Cliff Face – More than 100ft drop to the crashing waves and rocks below.

Arcane Lighthouse 03 – Artificers Workshop

  • 12 – Stairs – Leads down to 06
  • 13 – Balcony – A ladder to the side leads to the ground.
  • 14 – Stairs – Leads up to 17
  • 15 – The Workshop – Curious contraptions and creations line many of the shelves. There seem to be experiments on imbuing different types of crystals with spells. Hidden hatch behind the shelves leads to 16
  • 16 – Hidden Area – Two small safes and a chest with a strange looking chest with a puzzle lock.

Arcane Lighthouse 04 – Stairs

  • 17 – Stairs – Leads down to 14
  • 18 – Storage Area – Exotic statues, artwork and pieces of furniture are stored haphazardly and seemingly forgotten or ignored.
  • 19 – Ladder – Leads up to 20

Arcane Lighthouse 05 – Viewing Platform

  • 20 – Control Room – Hatch leads down to 19. A series of buttons, levers and dials sit on a semi-circular console. Adjusting them seems to dim, brighten or change the colour of the light, but not switch it on or off.
  • 21 – Balcony – This high up the wind is very strong.
  • 22 – Ladder – Leads up to 23

Arcane Lighthouse 06 – Viewing Platform

  • 23 – Hatch – Leads down to 22
  • 24 – Crystal – The source of the light. Four control pads with similar, but smaller, glowing crystals surround it.

John Forrest

Hi Tom. Just wondering if you ever made tiles for this map of the levels of the tower with transparencies surrounding it?

tomcartos

Hi John, I'm afraid not. I only started releasing the transparent tiles for my maps after the Foundry update that introduced the canopy layer.

Holy cow I love this. My characters have to go to a port at some point and when they do, I'll be sure to include this. Thanks for such a killer map!

Phergus

Cool lighthouse. Is it intentional that the entrance to the hidden room would be obvious for anyone standing in the workshop?

tomcartos

Hi Phil. It's always a bit of a balancing act with those kinds of things between showing the door, and not making it too obvious to the players. If you are playing in VTT you can hide it easily enough with Dynamic Lighting. If you are playing IRL, there has to be some metagaming management I think.

Phergus

I can only hide it with vision blocking by hiding the walls entirely which looks terrible and is just a different clue to the players that if the walls aren't visible then there must be something behind them. I'll fix it in gimp.

Good map at the right moment, ty.
