Background
In order to travel from the eastern freehold to the desert in the north, parties must either find a way to cross the mountain range that divides the northern half of the continent from the south, or travel through the single canyon pass.
Less than a decade prior, passage was relatively simple and routine, but since the young emperor’s coronation all travel to the northern lands has been stopped, all borders closed both in and out.
The Norsgard outpost marks the end of the freehold lands, and the edge of the Emperor’s reach. Despite there being little traffic for the last few years, the commander has kept the watch well trained and vigilant. Little has changed for them, only now their job is to keep people in more than out. Passage through is only possible with a letter from the Emperor or her ministers, and none have been awarded in years.
The party needs to travel to the north to follow their current quest and redirecting to cross or go under the mountains would add weeks of perilous travel to their journey. Squalls of incredibly strong winds funnelled down the canyon make flight almost impossible, and the walls of the canyon quickly become sheer, unclimbable rock face. Can they find a way to gain passage unharmed?

Design Notes
Canyon Outpost 01 – Courtyard
- 01 – Training Area – The outpost stands idle most of the time, but the guards are kept sharp with daily training and regular scouting skirmishes. Stairs lead up to Ramparts
- 02 – Stables - Not many horses are kept here, just one or two for messengers.
- 03 – Well – Secure water supply
- 04 – Kennels – A pack of trained dogs supplement the guard.
- 05 – Barbican Lower – Wheel cranks on both sides of the gates have to be turned simultaneously to open them. Ladders lead up to the ramparts.
- 06 – Dormitory – Guards work in three 8 hour shifts, taking it in turns to sleep and rest. Each bunk is shared between the different shifts.
- 07 – Toilets
- 08 – Mess Hall – All meals are eaten here, and the commander also gathers troops here to give out relevant information.
- 09 – Pantry
- 10 – Kitchen
- 11 – Senior Officer’s Quarters
- 12 – Commander’s Quarters – Secret door behind wardrobe leads to an escape tunnel into the mountain.
- 13 – Escape Tunnel
- 14 – Armoury – Aside from the guard’s general equipment, additional heavy weaponry and arms are kept here. The Commander has the only key.
- 15 – Holding Cells – Rarely used as few are allowed to pass through.
Canyon Outpost 02 – Ramparts
- 16 – Barbican Ramparts – Murder holes above the gate allow guards to drop lead weights and boiling oil into attackers. Ballistae are mounted on either side.
- 17 – War Horn – Sounded whenever the scouts signal that someone is approaching to put the outpost on alert.
- 18 – Forge - All repairs and weapon manufacturing have to be carried out on site due to the distance from the nearest town.
- 19 – Scout Camps – Raised above the fort in the lower hills, these camps are permanently manned to give advance warning of approaching groups and watch for attacks coming from the mountains themselves. Above the camps, the cliff walls become sheer and unclimbable.
- 20 – Beacon – If the outpost comes under attack, the beacon will be lit to signal reinforcements stationed at the canyon entrance, a few miles away.
