Roy broke up with Keely because he was afraid she wouldn't have time for him anymore. Case in point their surprise vacation. Roy didn't realize how busy she was actually going to be and literally thought that she could just escape to the Mediterranean for over a month before starting her gig. He realized that she was going to be "better off" without him. Even if that may or may not be true. His description of her article says it all.

And if you hate the Nate villain arc you are REALLY going to hate Jake. What this cat did is beyond the pale to the point that most people by the end of the series are throwing things at him. It's a wild ride.
