Hello, everyone. Space Marine Steve here.

I have some really sad news about the production of Kill Team Challenger: Season 2 - it has been cancelled. I'm sure that there are going to be many reactions to this news depending on how invested you were in the series, in me as a player, the concept, and as one of our fans.

I respect you all too much to give you some kind of corporate business answer, your standard press release kind of thing... I'm just going to hit you with the truth.

As it turns out, the release of the new Kill Team rules came at the worst possible time, worse than we first anticipated. At first it appeared to be a good thing, I mean... who wouldn't be excited about a new game, right? However, we had already filmed almost 80% of the series when the announcement came; all that footage, organizing players, voice overs, sponsors, everything... gone.

I put a lot of myself into this series and the team rallied around me to make it happen. I was (and still am) very deflated by the reality of the situation.

Why was it Cancelled? New Kill Team is almost here!?

While the new game looks exciting and it does represent a great opportunity for us one day, the resources here at Play On are finite. To accomplish what we do, we go through an intense process of scheduling, planning, preparation, etc... and there isn't time this season to go back and re-plan and re-shoot, (trust me - we looked, we tried, it doesn't fit) let alone learn the game to a standard I am ready to film with.

On a side note... what if it isn't great? While unlikely, what if I didn't like it or the game wasn't good? Here at Play On, our passion for what we do fuels our dedication to the quality of the work and you deserve the best that we can do. If I'm not passionate about it (which none of us can guarantee) then I might not be passionate about the show which means that you will see that, game after game... not what you signed up for.

So What Now?

Right now, Play On is cranking out some fantastic 40k content and we have some wonderful new shows in production, so I hope that you will all enjoy what we are releasing now and for the rest of the season.

If you are disappointed, know that I share in your disappointment. I am taking this experience as a life lesson in resilience and trying my best to move on - we've all got to keep moving forward. Kill Team Challenger was a place for me to be creative, play games with my friends, and bring a little bit of myself to a regular show on the channel. While it is hard to say 'good bye' to it and all the work we've done, it was the right thing to do for Play On Tabletop.

I am still a fiercely dedicated member of Play On Tabletop and won't be going anywhere, we just all need to focus on different things now and that is the way it needs to be.

I'll be hoping for Kill Team content to find its way back onto the channel soon but for now I'll put it on the calendar for "one day".

Until I see you again "one day", thank you for all of your support, Play On.

It's all good Steve! Don't get me wrong I want all the PoT content that I can get but this is understandable. We arnt going anywhere and we look forward to what comes next!

Tudes

Don't throw away the footage.. you might still change your mind one day and slap it together.. I'd still watch even a cruder version of what's on offer now, new edition or not..

Tech Priest Initiate

Unfortunate, but at least it isnt GW gidhand-ing the series out of existance :P

Colin David Martin Fanning

I am super bummed out as I don't really have interest in the new kill team and your series got me into the OG, but I understand and respect your decision. Stay strong and play on!

Kevin Finnegan

Really surprised with this news I loved kill team challenger just wondering if you already filmed 80% of the season could you release that? I’m sure loads of us would love to see it!

Logan Johnson

I for one definitely would like to see the footage that you have already organised and recorded no matter whether it will be outdated by the time it will release, I’m starting getting into kill team after starting 40K again at the start of this year and find your videos so useful to make me more familiar with the game

lewis salter

Yea could you release it to the patreons only?

Schnauz

Sorry to see it go as it was more intimate PoT compared to the larger scale 40K battles but I understand why. Chin up, Steve, it was great fun; work's never wasted when you got something out of it and learned! It's still the Year of Steve and you'll come back better and stronger than ever.

Nate

I understand the decision & I'm sure it wasn't easy. It is disappointing to hear, but if it is in Play On's better interest, then so it be. This show is solely what sparked my interest in KT. Let's all hope KT2 is everything we hope it to be & breathe life back into a KT S03 in the future.

Nick Mastrofilippo

That sucks, is there any way you would consider releasing what you have as a Patreon exclusive? I would be interested in watching it regardless because I love watching Steve and the rest of the guys play.

lomhow1234

Is the hard drive bust or is it not at a reasonable stage to even post on Patreon?

Coolyen

I agree with the comments above - if you've filmed 80% already it'd be great to see it rather than let that disappear into the ether!

Zamfirescu Adrian Mihai

Steve this news is horrible. I feel so bad for the effort you guys put in this and for missing out on a favorite show. But i hope you can recover for a s03. A lot of us are behind your effort with this series. Good luck and maybe some tech wizz in the community can help. Praise the Omnishaia.

Tomliginyu

Hey Steve, echoing what a few other people are saying. Would still like to see the content, maybe as a patreon thing (if you have any finished videos) . Best of luck to you and the team. Excited to see what you guys do next.

Samuel Bird

For my two cents, I'm going to chime in with several others here. I'd like to see what you have. Heck, I wouldn't mind if you went so far as to finish the other 20% with the previous version of Kill Team. I don't think anyone is going to hold it against you for not jumping on the newest shiniest version right away.

David Ferns

Gosh, I feel like this is just a re-wording but it feels such a shame to not release the content to date. KTC is a fantastic show and this season so far felt like it had taken another step up. Even if that doesn’t happen, the videos to date have been great and I’m sorry for your Steve.

Álvaro Frutos Gutiérrez

I just want to second what's been said here: There is a new Kill Team. It doesn't mean that the old one is bad or boring. If you have all that filmed, it will be really fun to watch and I'll love to see that. You may be worried by YouTube comments saying "Hey! This is not the new Kill Team!" But I think that you can put some warning at the beginning of the video. You can even say: "Warning: This is not Kill Team 2.0, but it's still fun". If it's too much to edit, you could release more "raw" content. And If you don't want to lower your standards, you can always make it Patreon only.

Nathan DePumpo

Completely understandable! I’m just hoping to see some more factions of space marines out there and some more great content. Keep powering through! We all support you

Alexander Pierre

I am probably too sentimental but I teared up feeling the sadness through your words. You and the team did a great job with this series, it was super fun and entertaining. As a side note, Play On made me come back to the 40k universe after having played from 2nd to 4th edition and Kill Team Challenger introduced me to a game that would actually suit my busy professional and family life. Besides being a great source of entertainment, your videos helped a lot as I learned the game that way :). Thanks for the hard work and getting me (and my brother) playing again. I can't wait to see what's coming next (*cough* Star Wars Legion *cough*). You guys rock. ps: I love the positivity and support from everyone here :)

Auto303615

It's a shame to lose Killteam (and the steamroller) but at least you are focused on PlayOn's key deliverable.... T Shirts! PlayOn is a t-shirt company!!!

Nick gallagher

Hey Steve, sorry to hear about the bad news. I think that if you guys have more Kill team filmed, then just put it out there so everyone can enjoy the amazing work you guys have done. Keep up the great work, and chin up. Play On!

Sasha

Yes, I am struggling to understand why not release what you already have. I don't see how new version of the game should stop everyone enjoying watching you play what now is previous version. Who cares really? Just leave disclaimor at the start about how it is an old version.

playontabletop

Hello everyone, Tak here. This is definitely a hard decision for us to make and because of Steve's hard work on Kill Team this year. 1. We cannot continue with Kill Team edition one because we are not sure how well it will do on YouTube and if our resources are better suited on other shows. We are so thankful to Patrons because of what you have allowed us to do. This month Space Marine Steve is even able to work Full-Time for us to help develop ongoing efforts. However, we always need to maximize returns on our efforts so we can afford our monthly costs. 2. We had everything scheduled and now have to reschedule. Unfortunately that doesn't mean we can take a break and wait. So we felt it best to fill our time and utilize our resources for other things. As we have no idea when we will get our copy it is hard to stay in waiting mode. 3. 80% of filming represents less than 20% of the work. Each episode takes two-weeks of an editors time. That means we are putting another 20+ weeks into an older edition and we are not confident that is the right call. 4. Showing what we have done already. Not easy. We shoot on multiple cameras and with separate audio. There is a very good amount of work left to even be able to show these games. I hate to be the voice of the corporation but we are about to sign a longer term lease for our studio and we are still working really hard to make this a sustainable and fun studio that can do this for a long time to come. I thank everyone for your enthusiasm around Kill Team Challenger. We have a new upcoming show that we hope will fill the void AND when an opportunity to revisit Kill Team comes up we will definitely look at it.

Mr. Knusprig

I would also love to see what you´ve got. I´m always having a great time watching KTC while painting and it would be sad to lose this. You could always make it Patreon only and i would watch the heck out of it. Eitherway i´m thankfull for what we´ve got and i´m excited to see what´s coming next. Lots of Love

Ørjan Nielsen

Thank you Steve, and thanks to all the other members of PoT. Hopefully we will still get to see Steve wreck havoc on the table, even outside the KT arena. Even though i would, as all other fans, love to see the season -I understand the decision due to financial worries. Most of all I just want continued fantastic content, and if that means to use resources elsewhere, that will be for the best. And Steve? It's still your year❤ Play on!

Arthur Bobany

Thanks for the update and all the content so far Steve! You should do what feels right, but I can say I'd love to watch the episodes you already have, in whatever format/state they are at, even if a Patreon-exclusive thing. Keep being awesome man!

Timothy Waddell

I understand your position, and it does suck, but maybe put together a montage of epic moments from the footage you already have? I'm sure there are those "HOLY SH*T" moments that you can at least present proudly, or maybe the opposite; the best of the worst? A blooper real could be super fun. Either way, still behind you, and appreciate the candid explanation. Play on!

Grady McCormick

That sucks but is understandable. At least we had fun while it lasted. I can't wait to see what is next for this. I still believe in Steve. Play On!

Matthew Beavis

Can you make a small clip of highlights as a send off to the season that wasn’t? Would be a good way to update the YouTube community and keep some happy memories alive. Take care Steve, I’m sure kill team 2.0 will be just as rewarding but you need a breather!

Zac Meadows

Sad for you, guys … but I understand your reasoning & really appreciate you taking the time to explain it to us.

Zac Meadows

Don’t let it knock you back. Just … erm… carry on playing… (no that’s not it… what’s the phrase again?)

Micah

No worries. I look forward to Kill Team Challenger Season 3 whenever it happens. It still feels like the year of Steve. From the blue light filtered screen of my mobile device play on.

James campbell

That's a real shame, kill team challenger was my favourite show, how comes you couldn't finish off season 2 with the old rules, and just put a disclaimer in the video?

Tim

Sad to hear. Possibly a Patreon exclusive perk?

Zamfirescu Adrian Mihai

Thank you Steve for the heart you’ve put into this project. And thank you Tak for taking the time to explain! Hope to see more KT soon. Until than Play On!

Zamfirescu Adrian Mihai

P. S. We are not here for the games (rules) we are here for the players… but i think most if not all understand that sometimes for the grater good some cuts need to be made. So if that’s what is good for you guys right now, we trust you as you have done an excellent job so far.

Mattyjensen

Ah, that really sucks, sorry to hear that, although would be awesome to still see the episodes somehow, especially if they are already filmed, maybe Patreon exclusive? #webelieveinsteve

Torbern Klason

Man I am going to miss Steve and his "box-of-shame"!!!! I gladly watch the old kill team rules. I still find that game fun and entertaining and keep playing it with my children. I understand all the decisions but I be glad to watch the unedited version of what you have. Hey, all the meaningless blah blah blah is fun to watch....after all Steve is a VERY entertaining person :-D WE LOVE YOU ALL at Play on Tabletop

Will B

Thanks for keeping us in the loop. As disappointing as it is, I understand that sometimes "stuff" happens. You guys do such amazing work and I eagerly await to see what you do next. Play on!

Tobias Norling

Yeah, that's really dissapointing, Kill Team Challenger is definately my favourite of the shows. I'll echo what others already mentioned, why can't the season be finished with the old rules? It's not like the old edition goes away because a new one is launched, and just dropping all that finished work really seems like a waste.

Keith Pratt

Could we get a short video of the final results for the filmed matches? I wanna know how many names Steve got to add to his bag :)

Michael Nunes

Thanks for the update Steve. I'm sure most people aren't going to hold it against you. As I was reading it, I was thinking, "Why not just finish the last game, and air the episodes anyway?" I'm sure there are reasons for it. Thanks for your hard work.

James

"My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined" Absolutely sucks to hear guys. But I look forward with anticipation to future Kill Team and more bag signatures.

mike.

That's a real shame, but the article provided a sigh of relief at least... The initial thought when reading was "Sweet Jesus, Steve has left PlayOn!". Really glad that's not the case. KTC was awesome, but if you think your attention is better served elsewhere, then I'm onboard and ready to consume whatever that content looks like!

Luis A. Camas

Use the new Kill Team Box as an excuse to create some How to play Kill Team content. It Seems a lot of people are getting into the new Kill team and I think this would be a great opportunity for a teaching series. I for one would love it.

Matthew Schmitt

Agree with Luis. A tutorial would be awesome, especially the way you guys do them.

Thomas Ryan

So you're not doing ANY coverage of the new game?

Bob Manias

I was wondering why I wasn't seeing anymore of KTC on YouTube. I loved the series. This is pretty disappointing, but alas...as a fellow content creator, I get it.
