Hello! I’m still on episode 1, so I don’t know if you talk about this later on, but just to give some context: the drama is set in a fictional South Korea where, instead of being a republic (as it actually is today), it’s a constitutional monarchy like the U K. That’s why they refer to the Crown as to a Prime Minister. It’s all fictional because South Korea isn’t like that in reality.

Okay so just for your future convenience, these are the family tree: King Hui Jong has two sons. 1. Crown Prince I Hwan who later becomes King Yi Hwan 2. Grand Prince I An, our main character After becoming king, King I Hwan gets married to Yun I Rang making her Queen Yun I Rang. They have a son, who becomes the Crown Prince I-Yun After King I Hwan dies in the fire, Crown Prince I-Yun becomes the current king, King I-Yun. Queen Yun I Rang, however gets demoted to Queen Mother, instead of just Queen as the title of 'Queen' is reserved for the spouse of ruling monarch. Now, because little King I-Yun is a kid, and won't be able to fulfil all the duties of a king properly, they appointed Grand Prince I An as the regent. Regent is basically 'acting king' when the king is not available. Think of it as an assistant manager in a corporate settings. To explain the beef between Queen Mother and Grand Prince, Queen Mother is tightly bound lady from a noble family who was kind of brought up on the idea of being a queen. Her entire life value and personality is tied up in the fact that she is the Queen in any form. So, when her husband (now dead) tried to abdicate the throne and make Grand Prince I An (his little brother) the king instead, she lost it and burned that piece of paper with order to crisp. Her excuse was, she was doing it for her son, because her husband was robbing their son of his opportunity to the throne by abdicating it for I-An

I’m watching your reaction to the first episode right now. You probably figure out the character relationships more clearly later on, but I still wanted to point it out. Right now, the reason an 8-year-old kid is on the throne is because the previous king died. The previous king was the child king’s father and also Yi An’s older brother. The Queen Mother is the former king’s wife and the child king’s mother—so she’s not Yi An’s mom, she’s his sister-in-law. Hope your reactions to the later episodes come out soon. I’m only 20 minutes into the reaction but omg it’s so funny to me how Cait is trying to focus on the show and here you have Josh randomly going “is that real grass?” multiple times 😭 and then she’s just trying to enjoy Byeon Wooseok’s good ass body and Josh stops the video to rant about the Bloodhounds guy 😭😂😂 I could see the internal sigh on Cait’s face LOLOL
