I feel awful saying this, but I don't think I can do this Side Dishes. I just... I hate Upsidedown Cake. The focus on sadism and bondage and tentacles and basically everything about it is just taking the stuff that I don't like and putting it all at the forefront. The reason these are all "opposite" of what's in the comic is because it's stuff that I don't like to draw. I also really can't shake this awful, guilty feeling that this Side Dish was basically bought by having a lot of commissions done that I can't afford to say no to. That's a big reason why I've been so quick to remind everyone that they can give their own ideas for Upsidedown characters in the hopes that this would become more of an original idea.

I was hoping once we got to the polls and such I'd get over it. I don't love every Side Dish story concept at first, but for the most part I end up enjoying the collaborative creation. But for this one basically every poll suggestion fills me with existential dread at having to draw and write dialogue for this. Just thinking about it has me so drained and stressed out that I'm writing this blog post instead of drawing, because I just can't think artistically right now.

Just knowing that I'm supposed to start a poll for this is so headache-inducing that I'm having a hard time doing my actual comic. And Side Dish stories can take up to a year to finish... I don't think I can handle a full year of this comic. I'm having the same feeling I had with the Amber's Farm story, which was so bad that I cut it short with a black and white page because I didn't even want to look at it long enough to color it.

I don't want to abandon a project like this but I've been staring at a blank canvas since I woke up this morning and all I can think about is how much I'm dreading this Side Dish story. It's completely consumed my psyche in a way that is interrupting stuff I actually want to work on.

Am I over reacting? We've barely started on this chapter, and everyone seems really excited for it. It won the poll so easily that I feel guilty not wanting to do it.

As much as we all enjoy this series, it is a passion project for the storytelling beats and art that you are interested in and enjoy. if you’re not feeling it that’s gonna come through in the writing Don’t force yourself.

Pedro Rivera Rosado

Hey man if youre not feeling it, you won't be able to deliver to your usual standard. Therefore if don't want to im fine with it. Forcing yourself to do something you don't want affects your mood negatively.

DarkKnight12

Please do not feal pressured to write something you are not passionate about. If it makes you feel uncomfortable writing about this sort of stuff, then I completely understand not wanting to do it.

The Wixard

Seconded to what everyone else has said so far, and to add to it: It's good of you to express how uncomfortable this idea even is for you, I don't think any of us would commit to something we couldn't stand either and you shouldn't feel bad not doing this outside of as commission work that you took on. If they want to pay you whatever makes this tolerable in future they can but I don't think the rest of us can complain that you won't do it as a bonus against your will. It's also much better to pivot now than later, just take the runner up and start some new polls, no biggie.

Hey, it’s art. Art comes from the soul. And if it’s not in your soul then don’t try to make it part of you. If it sends you to a bad place then don’t do it. If you don’t want to continue this story than I’m with you. We don’t need you crashing, that would bring an end to the rest of the stories.

Escaped Dreamer

I'm going to be honest with you I mean the upside down cake is okay but it's not my favorite either. I actually voted for another thing wish it would have won. But if you can't write it man don't force yourself it's no point of making yourself miserable to please others.

Giorno Giovanna

don't continue it if you don't want to, its fine

ZeroZi

If your not feeling it then don't do it.

tom sawyer

Feel good about your decision and don’t fret over it. All of your fans want to see you succeed and do stories you love. Passion creates works of art…not polls lol

Colby Deemer

If you don't want to do this Side Dish, then please move on and do something else. I just feel really bad because I'm the one who suggested this because I wanted a story with those pinups as a base but if you don't want to continue with thus then please just cancel this story and do another thing.

If the artist works on a project that their heart isn't in, or worse that they despise, then it shows in the quality of the work. Plus it can have a negative effect on your mental health. It won't be the first time I've encountered an artist who had to drop a project or change up their direction so that they could be satisfied with their work. Pencil-Sama did it when they changed A Boy and His Familiar from NSFW to SFW; was super disappointed in that but what can ya do? Sleepy is doing it by finishing out his more dark storylines and focusing on lighter/more comedic ones, which I haven't made up my mind about yet. Shia completely ditched all his punny, yet arousing comics but I'll always have memories. Ya gotta do what's right for you and trust that ur true fans will understand.

Survivor897

You’re right you shouldn’t feel pressured if it doesn’t get the inspiration flowing. As much as I enjoyed Upside Down cake, it wouldn’t do anyone any good if you lost all motivation over it. So let’s just put it to rest and focus on what you really enjoy

forgin

Don't force yourself to do something you don't want to do it especially if it will affect you for so long in a negative way

Vince Xanders

I understand. If it's something you're not comfortable with, then who are we to pressure you into doing it. That would be cruel. I wouldn't mind doing a new poll with other side dish ideas again. There were other ideas that I really liked and would love to see

McMadow

Absolutely no problem. Better use your time to do something you can proudly present than force yourself to deliver a supbar product

RICKYTheGoat

It's cool Transmorpher you don't have to put yourself in a uncomfortable position to satisfy your readers and supporters We have got your back and always appreciate what you put on the table 😁👌💯💯

Killerferron25

If you really aren’t comfortable doing this side dish, then may I offer a suggestion. Perhaps for this year you could put side dishes on the back burner for now and just focus on doing short cakes for the time being, and when the following year comes around you could resume doing side dishes then. Nothing wrong with a little change of pace for once.

TheDarkD

No problem Do you dude we are here for your comics if your dont like a project dont do it end of story no justification needed. we love your work and style if certain themes or genres are off the table cool your the artist you chose what to make.

Geoffrey M Westlock

I agree with you, that that first page felt like a betrayal of who Jenna was. As a writer, I always try to stay true to what the character themselves would do or say, and not necessarily what I want them to say or do. I support your move and decision

LordSykos

If this is how you feel then better you nip this in the bud before getting too deep into it. Maybe in the future you could be more selective about what makes it into polls. Even if something seems popular you shouldn't have to force yourself to do something you aren't comfortable with, especially since Side Dishes is basically bonus content.

JDogX21

Boo! I wanted to compare GOOD Jenna with how she treated her girlfriends/lovers/mothers-of-her-children vs. how BAD Jenna treated her PRODUCT and BREEDING STOCK!

JDogX21

Still, I would love to get a look at BAD Jenna's "stables". I can just imagine all her girls like actual breeding stock: keeping them in an actual barn, collared and chained, wearing slutty animal costumes that showed off thier assests; especially the pregnant ones.

Kenneth

I know I'm not someone that you generally like to hear from but I will advocate for the devil a bit regarding this situation and say that while I do concur with the general sentiment expressed by other members, that you shouldn't force yourself to do a comic story/setting that utterly perturbs you; it would probably benefit everyone (both you and your membership) if you were a bit more clear about subject matters/fetishes that you are completely diametrically opposed to doing. Going back and looking at the completed poll I see what you mean by it winning by a landslide. So I would say it's safe to assume that a decent number of members (even if they aren't saying anything publicly) are probably feeling like they have been hung out to dry right now. So perhaps "laying the snake out straight" as it were, going forward, might be a good course of action to avoid a repeat of this sort of scenario.

Lepidoptera Monocerus

Something I've been thinking about a lot lately as Jenna's powers and their source have been explained and developed more in the last few chapters (and especially with the revelation in 46 that Mano's power is actually malleable and it's Jenna's own identity that's been causing the "altruistic-ness" of the changes) is how she has-to a certain extent-become a metaphor for/avatar of agency, free choice (and free love!), and self-determination. I feel like the more she grows as a character, the more empowering a figure she becomes. For me personally, SDs and BSCs tend to be somewhat hit-or-miss. Sometimes I don't have a lot of interest in the source material or initial concept and end up really enjoying the finished product. Occasionally I'll go in expecting to really love it and feel kind of let down (as was the case with BSC-12, where I was expecting a huge X-orgy and got a series of one-on-ones.) I think it's just part of the collaborative nature that you mentioned. But, even when I don't really connect with a project on any level (like with the Short Cake that just ended), I still can appreciate the artwork, and I find it genuinely engaging to read about your ideas and the characters' motivations. To this point, I think it's a very good policy that you only take on external concepts for BSC that you have a degree of familiarity with, as it makes everything feel more authentic, and your level of investment in the characters and the stories really shows on the page. UDC is an interesting change of pace from the Prime universe, and I will admit that I was intrigued to see more exploration of the concept, but, as Geoffrey pointed out, it does kind of stand in controversion to everything that BCC stands for, so your apprehension is completely understandable. I was basically choosing based on my preference for multiple-partner scenes, but I didn't really feel engaged by any of the options so far. I'm pretty shy on here, and I tend to just observe and see where things go, but perhaps I should have made a suggestion to attempt to move things in another direction. But here again we have this unique issue with UDC's "opposite-ness", which is how do you move it away from that path without basically just making it BCC? On a side-note, maybe CWG is a better candidate for a Side Dish? All art is subjective-everything from the pronunciation of a character's name to their internal motivations to the greater meaning of the work may be very different in the creator's intent from what is perceived and extrapolated in the mind of the observer. My theories and feelings may also be very different from the next viewer, and theirs from the next. One of the perks of this serialized medium and communal environment is the interactivity and opportunity to influence the outcome (whether we use it or not.) But even (perhaps especially) when it comes to as talented an artist as yourself, if your heart isn't in it, then the art will suffer. So that's four (probably way too long) paragraphs to say that I think you made the right choice, and to thank you. Thank you for being upfront and honest about your feelings. Thank you for explaining your motivation regarding your solicitations for ideas to free up the characters from the initial commission concepts and have this become more original. And thank you for catching it before it got to the point that it did before. While I wasn't personally around for SD-06, I'm sure no one wants a repeat of that situation. On that note, while I take Kenneth's point about transparency, I think the way you handled this is also understandable. UDC is obviously extremely popular, and you're obviously a people-pleaser, so I think one page in isn't that bad of a place to stop it (also, Jenna in the "Mileena" outfit is pretty hot). If I were to offer any advice, I think it would just be to, in the future, maybe take a little more time with the suggestions and try to make sure that you're going to be completely comfortable with all of the potential scenarios before offering the initial poll to the community (and maybe to a lesser extent with the subsequent polls as well.) I also want to thank you on a personal level, because those musings about Jenna's nature and significance (the first paragraph) have been rattling around in my head for the past month or so, and I haven't really felt like there was a good place or time to post it, and it felt at least tangentially relevant here. Finally, you're not overreacting. YOU are the artist. We're all here because we appreciate your work. None of us wants you to sacrifice your equanimity for a concept that you wouldn't be fully invested in anyway (at least I certainly don't). And you absolutely shouldn't feel guilty about anything. Just think of it this way: Would Jenna (Jenna Prime) want you to feel that way? Of course not! (Unless you wanted to feel that way-I guess?) 😉
