Risperidone is the go to drug for most schizophrenics. It works well and has few if any side effects. The problem with it is that slowly a patient will build up a tolerance, when that happens they get prescribed one of many other drugs that all have serious side effects. After a month on the replacement their tolerance disappears and they can go back on risperidone. I worked in a assisted living home and my clients went through this regularly. That doctors and nurses don't explain this to relatives is fucked up.

I worked as a registered nurse in mental health for over 20 years, and I'm afraid I do not agree with you at all. Risperidone is shit. The side effects are horrendous (feel like growing boobs and lactating boys? Or how about a permanent internal feeling of intolerable restlessness?) and it doesn't work very well. It's just not a very good drug, even by the standards of antipsychotics which are generally pretty heinous.

Yeah I agree. There’s a lot of side-effects. I will say Risperdal is better then many of the first generation Antipsychotics which are the biggest offenders of TD which can be debilitating. Risperdal is better then say zyprexa and clozapine when it comes to weight gain. Abilify can cause some aggression initially and is linked to gambling issues. While Risperdal is one of the biggest offenders of gynecomastia. Generally, if someone has intense delusions you’ll need a powerful antipsychotic to get them out of it. While Risperdal isn’t without side-effects, it’s still very useful for many cases. I definitely feel bad for anyone that needs to take any of that stuff. Even antidepressants suck when it comes to side-effects. Many people don’t realize….I found it a little cringe when he commented that the doctors were saving money by cutting her meds. I sort of doubt that. Many patients, especially older patients, need to have medications reduced due to their bodies changing. They generally need less medications. She also may have been having some horrible side-effects. For instance, lithium overtime WILL KILL your kidneys. There’s nothing you can do to stop it. Same with depakote, overtime it will effect your liver. It becomes a risk vs, benefit situation.

Vatican is a huge let down. I didn’t want to go but my husband insisted, he’s a mechanical engineer. I have a degree in art history and I love Italian art. Images in textbooks are more detailed than what you can see in person so I knew seeing in person wouldn’t compare. The Vatican is so crowded. If you do go, get a private tour so you can skip general admission lines. Once your through the line, ditch the tour guide and have lunch at the cafe in the middle of the pavilion and enjoy the grounds. The Vatican museum is fine but be prepared to get herded like cattle. Also, the Sistine chapel has no lighting so you can’t see the frescos very well. If you’re not that into seeing all of it, might be worth skipping.

Once a family member is mentally disabled they're basically dead. I know that from personal experience. To tim she died like 15 years ago and this was just the body. Maybe I'm exaggerating a bit but, it's somewhat true. I had a family member die like that and I still cried when it happened but I got over it semi quickly because it basically already happened months before

@Tim Dillon, lol, Being prescribed antipsychotics a ridiculous amount of times for primarily Depression, Anxiety/Panic Disorder/Dissociation/OCD, (all officially diagnosed[and there's plenty more that I an many other doctors agree are ridiculous or make half sense &/or no longer apply ..etc. but as I'll point out psychiatrist are DSM Calculators and 50% of the time socio-paths that determine your life's quality based off which Pharmaceutical company bought them the better steak to sell there newest line of pills that month and what keywords trigger there attention for that 1/2 second long enough to scribble down your the fate you'll have, until the next one. L O L) with, having tried to push this on me & my(much less neurotic ) sister + more friends , family and fellow 'peeps from psychiatrics' then any reasonable & informed person would ever want to believe. they have on maybe 6 or 7 different kinds after telling them they never work and cause horrible side-effects & even now(when I was wise enough once asked if I have allergies) have the 2 that caused me the my initial hellish experiences (Abilify & Latuda cause they won't put own the whole-drug class when I asked) listed as allergies like you would Penicillin or peanuts lol. But my point is they try to give Abilify for example with an antidepressant for depression, which should/is supposed to be be saved for the rarest situation as Tardive Dyskinesia (the side-effect that was causing Tim's poor Mom :( to rock & feel the most severe, anxious, dysphoria; No words could come close to explaining the level of discomfort I & so many others were the guinea pig of) may easily form, and that is why its so difficult for people with severe psychotic disorders {ex. Schizophrenia, Bipolar 1..etc.) with these medications as they must weigh between having the hell of the side-effects vs. their( if it works and if it does besides the Tardive D. symptoms they are like an apathetic zombie many times as well, that just eats sleeps for the majority of the day with a small window of time be exist yet with a diminished capacity) potential for sanity, not to mention they're a daily drug that can be from hundreds to upwards a $1,000+ from what I recall, it may have changed for better or worse in that sense. I think this could something you could look into Tim, sense your so close to the issue. and bring light to this topic that many are unaware of but its undoubtable that it's one of the biggest yet least talked about contributors to the "Mental health Crises" in this country. WITH HAVING 5 out of the TOP 25 MOST PRESCRIBED psychiatric medications in the US as of 2020 (and after large lawsuits filed against "ASTRAZENCA", for example, for this very reason facilitating of the over-prescription of such intense medications for unnecessary reasons; These statistics are increasingly difficult to find without knowledge of of the necessary resources and studies, when they used to be published as an increasingly popular yearly article along with many opinion and conversation pieces along with it. now even many past links to articles of this nature are miraculously broken. could definitely be coincidental regardless, why is this a topic hats ALWAYS seemingly left out of the "Mental Health Crises" discussions)but these are just thoughts and experiences of someone with firsthand knowledge, fuck do i know im not in college debt for perpetuity ,unless I am, but does it really matter in this realm at the end of the day.
