My biggest peeve with this episode is that it had so much potential. I think if you bring in a writer that specialises in drama and then have Moffat help with the sci-fi elements it could have been an interesting look into the world The Doctor leaves behind and have him face the consequences of choices made with good intentions, it would have slotted nicely into 12s whole "Am I a good man" arc.

You're so right. Especially after last episode. While I considered a lot of it quite boring the best parts were easily where we explored the consequences of his actions, like you said, made with good intentions. It's not often we get follow up episodes to something that happened awhile ago and unfortunately they fumbled this one.
