you've hit on the crux of the show's shortcomings, it's just too short. S1 feels it the most because it was written to be 11 hours long before being reworked to 8. The lowering of episode counts is the worst trend in streaming IMO. Something that really helped me appreciate it was an interview the showrunner did about how they can't approach the series on a book by book basis, they have to adapt with a "series as a whole" approach with an 8 season maximum in mind. But that's something a bit hard for anyone that's read the books with episodes like this that are largely connective, it's harder to engage with them because we're looking for things that aren't happening or are happening different enough that it's being missed. This one, other than getting everyone in the same spot also sets up the warder bond and it's specifics in a deeply impactful way. But we're activwly wondering where elayne is. I think that's part of why it's improved on rewatches for me, after the initial shock I could get out of my "book headspace" more and enjoy the side plots more. Some of it is prequel stuff too, Both Steppin and Karene are from the prequel though events are a bit different there. P.S. you're remembering right on the order, a bunch of perrin stuff was moved to s2. You nailed it in your last reaction, Laila's death was in place of the two whitecloaks. The episode 2 encounter is the baerlon standin and show justification for the capture. I think stuff like this is a big casualty of the squish from 10 to 8 episodes. Like, how do you do elyas any justice with a half episode of time right? P.P.S. Showrunner word on loial's size and looks is they wanted him as practical as possible so budget wouldn't exclude him from scenes he should be in. As much loial as possible. P.P.P.S The Warder Death ritual is based on the korean practice of wailing, where a designated mourner is given the duty of expressing the groups collective grief. quite apropos for showing off the reflection of emotion from the bond(great catch again btw!) The shirt ripping is part of it too, and the show toned it way down from what the real thing can look like (it can be days long!).
