Hi folks,

Here are chapters 15 to 17, plus a flashback interlude which marks (roughly) the midpoint of Book 5.

I hope you enjoy this release, and please let me know if you have any feedback.

And Then There Was None

Random question that's been poking me. Are a warden's bond's affected by physical damage to their arms?

Aspiring Sage

Thank you for the chapters. So much to digest and still so many unanswered questions.

ivyveritas

No, the runes are just a visual representation of the bond. They are not the bond itself. Good question, though.

Very good set of Chapters. I liked the idea of Kevik starting a new Order of Knights. Priest Tibon didn't see that coming. Georg as Armsmaster is a good addition. A visit back to Terevas was nice. Looks like Vilisa is recovering from the Book's Influence but isn't out of the woods yet. I find it interesting that Revana knew of the Wardens. I wonder if this was a recent development when she learned of Corec bonding her daughter or if she knew before that. Really nice to see how Ariadne was bonded and that Hera still hadn't mastered her powers at that point. I couldn't decide to be sympathetic with Boreas or not. On one hand he had to be fed up with Hera and Pallis, but on the other hand the previous "re-writing" of history gives him a sinister vibe given how the Elves and Humans were being treated under Agyros' reign. It seems only the Stormborn seem to revere Boreas, is he limited pretty much to them or do the Humans and Elves have temples to him as well?

ivyveritas

Revana was a scholar, historian, and a bit of an adventurer in her younger days, which is why she, Jorel, and Vilar (Melithar) were out exploring abandoned ruins. She came across the story during her studies. To be fair to Boreas, the last time he, Pallis, and Arodi changed history was after the humans and elves had turned to breeding Chosar as slaves to fight the Second Demon War for them. Iris joined them, despite being an elf, because she considered the Chosar to be the victims at the time. They led the Chosar to overthrow all the institutions that had kept them enslaved, conquering the combined human/elven empire and taking the great cities for themselves. Of course, after two thousand years, society changed. Borrisur's temples aren't limited to just the stormborn, but he's more popular there. In general, temples to Borrisur, Demesis, and Irisis are more common in rural areas (and for Irisis, near the sea, or among the nilvasta and seaborn), while temples to Allosur and Arodisis are more common in cities. The Lady's temples are spread out pretty equally, and Pallisur's can be found anywhere but tend to cluster in more warlike societies.

Interesting set of chapters, Ivy! Interesting to see that the small wildstorm introduced by Hera hiding the warden bonds seems to have been responsible for the deaths of the remaining Mage Knights. Thedan and Ephrenia would have been freed by someone, mostly their own Wardens. Indeed, a question arises that if somebody freed Thedan and Ephrenia, why not the rest of the mage knights / Ariadne? Can't help thinking that Zachal is still not dead fully. He may have a role to play in the events to come. Would Corec's magical protection be the special Blessing given by his grandmother, Hera? Things to think about. Ellerie bringing back spell books for Ariadne and the others to use seem to be important for fighting the war against Rusol. But they could also help Ariadne finally create an order of Mage Knights for Corec, just like Kevik creates an order of Knights, With the Sentinels coming in, could they probably form the Personal Guard for the Warden and his bondmates? or just for Ellerie? They would undoubtedly be highly trained compared to all of the other fighters in the Keep. Would they also be magic users?

ivyveritas

Corec's blessing is his ability to find the 'right' bondmates. His resistance to magic comes from his warden gift, per Hera's scene in the Book 2 epilogue. Yes, the sentinels are highly trained, with decades or centuries of experience. They aren't mages, though. They're heavy-armor fighters (plate armor, though by necessity, it's not quite as strong as human plate because elven men aren't as strong as human men). They are heavily focused on defense. They carry weapons, but in the event of an intrusion or invasion, their purpose is to stop or slow down the attackers, not to carry the fight back out to the offensive side.

And Then There Was None

When you say Corec's blessing. Do you mean his unique warden ability, or a separate blessing he got from Hera? I think the latter but want to confirm.

ivyveritas

His blessing from Hera (finding the right bondmates) is separate from his warden gift (magic resistance).

Really enjoying the story so far - it’s interesting watching Corec and company develop a nation out of whole cloth.

Brian Woods

Now, as a follow up question…is his resistance limited to just offensive magic, either damaging spells or ones that would work in opposition to his conscious or unconscious will, or does it encompass magic in totality?

Jason

Hi Ivy, any updates on when the next batch of chapters will be ready, thanks!

ivyveritas

It would be difficult to get them out by the end of the month. Not impossible, but unlikely. Beyond that, I've got a potential target date in mind, but I don't want to mention it yet in case I blow right past it. I'll post something when I have a more solid idea.

Hey Ivy, I have a couple of questions if you get a chance. 1) Hildra mentions her Library burned down during the revolt against her and she mentioned it surprised her because she didn't expect that kinda of destruction. Since her Library held two books about the Chosar People and even had the fact the Chosar kicked the other races out of the cities was the destruction of her Library done at the behest of Pallis or Boreas? or even Arodi or Iris? 2) Is Hera not able to grant Blessings that could protect Ariadne from Wild Magic? I remember Demea mentioning granting wards that could protect areas as one of the first things Allos figured out. Or was Hera not blessing Ariadne something more along the lines of her continuing to shield and hide Ariadne from Boreas, Pallis, and the others? Or was it a rule against blessing one's bond mates? I know Pallis still has Thedan (unless he has died off camera) and Arodi still has Ephrenia. Some of the others (aside from Demea who Hera said lost all of hers) still have some bondmates left? Or finally was Hera not blessing Ariadne due to Hera not wanting another Mortal wielding 3 of the 4 magics given Ariadne already has Arcane and Elder magic?

ivyveritas

1. No, it was a private library Hildra had assembled herself. The old gods didn't know what it contained. They can't be everywhere, and they can't open a book in the mortal world when they're in spirit form. Plus, they didn't generally do the searching themselves--after they stopped interacting directly with the Chosar child races, they depended on a small number of special priests who handled the search for them. That mostly came to an end a long time ago, but Pallis still has a few agents--they're the ones who stole the books Bobo was looking for in the Tyrsall library in Book 1. The reason Hildra was surprised was because she didn't realize how quickly the rebellion against her would whip itself into a violent frenzy. 2. The blessing of warding spells would turn Ariadne into a priest by granting her access to divine magic. That's out of the question in this case--not only is Ariadne Hera's bondmate, and thus it would be interference, but also as a warden's bondmate, the normal limitations to magical strength don't apply. And granting her access to a third magic would make her only the second mortal to ever wield three. Hera's already worried about what Rusol is going to do, so she's certainly not going to create another one. Plus, it's not necessary--arcane mages can learn warding spells, and wild magic has been rarely sighted since the wildstorms died out.

Jesse

Thank you. Interesting I had figured Yelena had stolen those books from book one (or rather had Sarlo do it). I had Figured that Pallis didn't bless Thedan because that would (once again) set Thedan at a position that Pallis would envy (having more sources of magic) and the story mentions Ephrenia and Arodi having a falling out so I could see Arodi never blessing Ephrenia out of spite. Given that Hera set out to create a person with all four sources of magic I wasn't sure if Ariadne having three would have been an issue to her or not.

ivyveritas

Hera was trying to produce a single, specific person whose existence would prevent Pallisur from ascending any further, due to intricacies in how the ritual works. But none of the new gods are otherwise attempting to give anyone a third magic, or even a second. Hera only tried to combine magics in Moira and in Marten's bloodline, but even there, Moira herself wasn't a mage, and Marten carried the gene for elder magic but he could only use demonic magic. If Moira and Marten had had a child together, the child would have expressed all four magics, but the divine magic would have come from the godborn bloodline rather than from a blessing. If any true priest (as opposed to a godborn) can wield two magics, it would be because the god who granted the blessing didn't realize the priest already had access to another magic. Arcane would be the most likely in that scenario, because there are types of arcane magic (such as wizardry) that won't show up without training.

ivyveritas

Oh, I missed one of your questions -- yes, there may be a few more bondmates still out there from the old wardens, but I've avoided setting any details in stone because I don't know yet if I'll need them for this story.
