Two pages today! Little mean to Emne here, but Queen Sonorie lays a piece of blame on her for her laziness, her selfishness, and her lack of concern for the power her family wields. We won't see Emne again, but I think she's absolutely learned a lesson~

Never let it be said that Karl Toma didn't contribute to Crescian High Society.

Stillpoint

Gonna completely honest, part of me wants to say with Sonorie through the next book >.>

WHAT'S IN THE F**KING BOX! was what came to mind on page 12. Nice little touch added by the Queen with the hat. Absolutely savage! Haha This is the best comeuppance possible for Lady Toma, honestly, and the most well-deserved reward for Emil.

I love Liro's "Nope, I'm so out and done with this!" background moment on page 2!

Will the intended twin sacrifice from the shrine still be killed and consumed elsewhere once the storm abates? Albeit quietly? Stone cold Sonorie! But an effective lesson for Emne.

Last time we saw Karl he was holey, now can we call him.. holy? And have to say I prefer this a lot more than my prediction of them eating an inak twin~

Ladile

Given everything else in these pages I'm assuming that giving Toma full custody is a genuine reward for a job well done as well as a convenient way to 'buy' his silence.

I adore Liro’s reaction. But just one question: how’d Emne realize the hat meant Karl was the sacrifice?

Mister Scarecrow

"Don't." Absolutely unconditionally flawless.

I wonder if anything in the theology would suggest that this honour could rescue a soul from efheby-digested damnation 🤔 But woof. A nice little window into how, ah, -individualised- the queen is making her messages.

Flyfly

Damn. I don't like Emne very much, but that honestly feels a bit much. Like geez she is she even important enough to deserve a personal attack of THAT scale. I kinda feel bad for her now...

Substituting a genuine dickhead for some young twins to get carved up for a bullshit religious ceremony is quite possibly the most genuinely nice thing Sonorie does here

Would there have been any venom in purple guy's meat, though? Also, how long was it dead for before they found it? Or was it a husk, like our princy boy? With the assumption that the queen did use Karl for the sacrifice, it's a double edged sword; she wants the traitors among the nobility and those whose inaction puts them at fault to be punished (and therefore learn fear or discipline). But unless all of the nobility are traitors, she needs plausible deniability to say ‘thar was actually, genuinely twin flesh, don’t listen to the heretics’, so is Emne making an inference here or is there more to the letter than what we explicitly are shown? Also, is this the first and last of the punishments to the nobility? Have the others been receiving personalized consequences of their own?

(Unrelatedly, I like how the sacrifice is made for look almost like the little round flatbreads in terms of how they're given and received, it makes it seem simultaneously systematically impersonal and weirdly intimate. And very, very tiny. As many people are getting their piece as possible.)

I’m wondering what everyone else in the queue is thinking of Emne’s reaction. Other than Liro(?) of course, who seems to have gotten the message too. Or are they too busy being “offended” by the Inak to really notice?

I say your willingness to give us official confirmation of Karl's fate isn't a problem; people are going to come away with all sorts of wrong and right assumptions at times, so your contribution isn't changing this distribution. I enjoy your engagement with the fandom, and I personally think you made it pretty clear with the framing to not feel like you hurt anything with such revelation.

Oh! In case you care about such minutiae, "né(e)" is a French loanword and as such has two variants depending on the gender of the person. For a woman, it's "née", but for a man like Emil, it'd be "né". So "Emil Toma né Sava". Yeah I know, I'm sorry for the grammatical nitpick... Anyway, I somehow got it confused that the sacrifice flesh went into some sort of softi-based baked good (like the softi flower cookies). Of course if it's a piece of meat with a softi wrapping you discard, it is a lot trickier to substitute it with anything that's not meatstuff. Not a vegan sacrifice then... but at least, a certain someone's demise didn't go to waste! Very practical!

It took me forever to realize “Nothing at all” is a call back to when Lady Toma was explaining the taste of twinflesh to her new husband. Kudos, you got me. /positive

Sonorie remains an effective, terrifying, clever ruler. Even in her "dark period" she is undeniably hard to dislike.

And at last Sonorie out-queens Marie Antoinette: "Let them eat Karl."
