You know, originally I had that sixth panel just open ocean and ship bits but I got sentimental this morning, went in, and added the family clinging to the debris ;o; Fie to your death flags! And I'm sure they have insurance.

Don't forget to vote on the Fanworks contest this weekend if you haven't had a chance yet! Winners announced on Monday :)

they're not out of the woods yet, but damn i was so sure they were all about to die on this page! I guess there's still time. 😂

Rifter

Damn the pillars look more like kraken tentacles in that panel with the ship sinking. Very interested to see what this whole construct(?) looks like!

Michael Stakely

But did that one guy with the beard survive? Because that was some truly magnificent, Brian Blessed-worthy facial hair.

Mister Scarecrow

Good! Hopefully someone comes along soon to pick up our poor orphans

Gally

Another Fred Miracle!

Flyfly

Interesting! Do the... mast-tentacles manage to secure the cargo?

Jeremy Ball

A place I worked at previously had a custom with a wooden duck. When someone fucked up royally, the duck was placed on their desk. And there it would remain until someone else fucked up.

I dig that they survive since it subverts how hard it was telegraphed that they were about to die - well, telegraphed if you're accustomed to "nothing can go wrong!" hubris calling down narrative wrath. But maybe we're getting a little cynical and jaded about "death flags" - c'mon people, we're fresh off a Morstorben slaughter parade AND the brutal murder of a child, it can't be balls-to-the-slaughter-walls ALL the time. Good luck, Crescian merchant family. You're gonna tell this story to your bored and disbelieving grandchildren one day.

Y'know, I'm glad they survived. It makes the rubber duck calling card even better here, 'cause Captain Mallard didn't have to kill them to loot 'em. It shows how fearsome he is, that he's strong enough to just chomp down a ship, loot 'em, toss out a rubber duck, and be on his way. It's like when you take candy from a baby. You don't gotta punch the baby to take their lolly. You just snag the lolly and stroll off whistling to the tune of Isabel Ne'er Do Well. (I am not actually an expert on stealing candy from babies, that's Sette's department)

LordOfChains

The panel said ‘KRAK’, but my mind replaced it with ‘NOM’

Rainwalker

i know its a hat but i am actively choosing to see the duck as rocking one hell of a pompadour

Stillpoint

Never a more elegant master of land, sea, air, and the very depths themselves~

CD

See, this is more intriguing than wholesale slaughter, because it adds a real cheeky air to whatever this Captain Mallard is about. And good to know we can sometimes barter for the lives of fleeting comic appearances with our commentary! Like blowing hopefully on the dice behind the scenes, even if events are still beholden to the True Storymaster ;)

You got sentimental? You made it explicit that they might yet live? Right after the prologue? Wow, this is going to be a decidedly different book from Unsounded. /hj (Explanation: I recall you mentioning that you had considered letting the wandering root regrow, decided that'd be out of tone for the book, and then have Duane burn it instead.)

Reed Copperstrand

Awww, I'm glad they survived! And it's good to have things turn out different degrees of horrible, keeps us on our toes. ;-P Also, I guess touching the 'mast' didn't really make difference, it would have activated anyway. Neat duck!

Talcon

And then a duck for good measure.

Allie V. Movement

I'm so completely smitten by the wine dark purple sea you've rendered. Primo color choices throughout these panels! My eyeballs are slurping it up!

Madison

If he really wants to be “MalLARD” instead of “MALlard” he’s really not doing himself any favors with the duck
