There'll be a little note from the Spymaster at the end of this scene to read.

Look how quick she makes it personal though. She hates this son of a bitch! And Duane doesn't mind returning the sentiment. In fact, it's good motivation to suck it up and maybe try something desperate.

Am I first? Again? At long last??

Cassie

Absolutely fascinating they were able to suss out Lem's involvement. I would love to get in on that spy network.

Suppy

Ouchhh, that was so personal it went through Duane here and right into my own pride. The bawling was perfectly mature! The curses justified! And moreso, those journals are private! Big fan of the expression goth plodman makes in the first panel.

The Clag

You're so good at making hateable characters and man am I also vulnerable to having my biass confirmed

Ashley

They know a lot of stuff that Duane never could, since he was busy going nutso and then left the country. Lemuel behaved super, super sus after Duane was gone.

Allie V. Movement

Terrific body horror this scene. A+ for Awful. I love it so much

Ashley

Our handsome protagonist.

fdsddfsa

I wish she wasn't a terrible person, I was hoping (for no particular reason) that she'd maybe be okay. Also if ANY of these are Bastion, it's the copper lady.

Fitzy

I like that he doesn't deny any of what Nora's saying. You were played, Boyo.

Kay

Oh dear. If they know who his brother is, then suddenly the horrors relating to having him in custody become...possible.

PotentPinion

Mad that this hasn't crossed my mind. I wouldn't put money on it still since the results of the brundlefly/WinaPaul haven't been revealed, but it'd be very funny and in character.

Khyrberos

there ain't no way 👀

Khyrberos

I don't think in all my years of reading I've ever quite understood the impulse in other fans to want, much less pay, for specific additional writings (side stories & whatnot); I mean it's cool & everything to hear more of Bastion & Rahm, or Vienne & Matty, or Duane & Leysa... but champing at the bit for it? Paying?? This is me now: https://youtu.be/cF6yPdpaKKM?si=9nFfrSkP-sKftj9x&t=20 I know that, if I'm lucky, we get another week, *maybe* two, of this, and then The Show Must Go On. But I wish I could read another dozen pages of this, & have considered what it might cost to commission more. It's nuts. == I think part of what's so compelling is that you've subverted the classic "scientist not believing the experiment" thing on it's head a litlle; yes all the others (well, maybe not Donnavieve) still think it's just a plod, but Nora has said she believes this is actually literally an immortal man. Now she totally hates his (nonexistent) guts but she believes he's a person! That this metaphysical impossibility stands before her, all-too-possible! It's kinda crazy. == Also kinda blown by these revelations & his seeming-non-reaction to them. Did he know the Queen had nothing to do with it? Did he know Lemuel/the Ssaelit betrayed him?? I didn't think so, and all he says is "you're so pleased". (on that note: pleased by what, what *is* she pleased by? That he is wrong about who killed him? That he cursed the Queen erroneously? Which bias is being confirmed by his comment/journals?) == and finally... I am so jealous you got the Tumblr fungus meme into this comic, *so* good. "NOT IN ANY WAY THAT MATTERS" my beloved

Nora Fatigue

Khyrberos

also I just love/can't believe we get her asking "What was it like to die". Like this should ABSOLUTELY be the question, right? I'm just surprised she didn't ask it earlier.

Jeremy Ball

"Lemon behaved super, super sus". So... no different to normal Lemon? Haha. ;)

Malik M.L. Williams

I love everything about this, but I especially love Nora’s last line.

Khyrberos

also how can you keep coming in with these banger "same word different meanings" lines? "this carrion carries on", "there remain many who these remains can help"? Frick. 😁

Flyfly

Interesting! Does that mean it was obvious to Duane''s friends and relatives too?

A

He saw the truth, or at least parts of it after Sette shoved that shawl into him. He knows he's been played.

jaaama

I am finding myself speechless at these pages, probably because my mouth is constantly full of popcorn. I love how Nora is trying to rile Duane up, and how Duane is resisting the bait- for now at least.

Reed Copperstrand

Duane learned the truth about his death in the Khert at the end of book 1. Fortunately. I'm sure he would have been shocked otherwise.

vCalavera

I'm not fatigued. I'm incensed. I don't think there has been another character in this whole opus that I have wanted to die more than her. Jesus Christ the inhumanity.

Khyrberos

Yeah I read on the Tumblr & it reminded me, lol

Karvil

If she'd done this when they first got him, he might take it worse because of how fresh it would have been, but he's had months to process this now, there's no shock or edge left to it

Rifter

I with you 100%. I eagerly await her demise.

Rainwalker

Duane has matured! Ah, this is concerning though- if they have intel on his brother, they may know they have him in custody. Presuming he hasn’t already been killed off-screen, of course~

Ashley

The two of them are really very similar people. Though Nora would bridle at that because she believes she's much more loyal to her country and much more serious about her work :)

Ashley

Nora's interesting. She seems to be enthralling some readers and repulsing others. Reminds me of Murkoph :)

Ashley

Yeah, that was part of the purpose of this exchange, to remind everyone about Lemuel and what Duane learned in the khert :) I'm glad you're enjoying it!

Khyrberos

More loyal & serious than chewing off your own lips & tongue to avoid spilling "state secrets"?? 🤔

Khyrberos

Normally *I'm* the one pointing out plot points or even background details to people who have seemingly missed them. How the mighty have fallen 😅

Flyfly

She's... a bit of an odd character. I think for her screentime she probably should be a bit more developed? Doesn't help that average reader probably doesn't even understand that she first appeared in ch14. I think what makes her weird is that she seemingly... isn't like, all that motivated, if that makes sense? She clearly bears scientific interest in all this, and this is also clearly motivated by the scars of chapter 14, but overall it just kinda feels like she's just doing her job, and other stuff merely colours that.
