I really wanted Pink Jacket (pink is the colour of evil this chapter, and pigs) to call Jivi something a little sharper than "fencejumper," and the script actually says "wetback." But after consulting with trusted advisors, we determined that was just too strong a slur.

Cresce has powerfully strong anti-immigrant sentiments that the two-toes may not have properly conveyed since they're a different species. But most Crescians really don't like anyone in Cresce but Crescians.

I know there's more of a world than what Sette's up to, but it's wild to only just now hear about there being Hethllot in Cresce that aren't ours.

I'll be calling him Pink Jack. Though I am surprised about the threat to throw Jivi out of the country. It just sounds odd back to back with giving an Ald a reasonably nice and considered option.

They're presumably pretty important guests of the Crown, with information that makes them worth their upkeep. A bit like better behaved Quigleys :) Matty should fit right in!

Remember that Quigley came out of the Silver affair smelling pretty good, so Matty is getting a lot of perks thanks to dad's "martyrdom." Jivi is getting the exact opposite, as he's not cooperating (won't say his last name or his parentage or why he's not in the country's rolls). Cresce really hates shit like that. They operate on cooperation, collectivism, and efficient beurocracy. If Jivi's gonna keep secrets, he can go do it somewhere else.

Jeez, the gang can't catch a break. You'd think Emil would have secured something a little more cushy for Jivi and Matty, and at least keep them together.

I kinda see it? Plats don't last too long. Terrible long-term memory. If Cresce was gonna hold on to any Alds, they make the most sense. Way more than Roger at least-- like buying a parrot vs goldfish.

I have always had a respect for "pissmop", for example, being both strong enough as a slur to convey in-story cultural weight, and not have unfortunate real-world cultural baggage without sounding childish. It's a rough needle to thread, trying to effectively localize for cultures that mostly exist in your head. I think in this case, you were right to pull your punch. I'm not sure either option would have quite hit what you were aiming at, but this one feels like it hits closest without going over. If that makes sense.

What's crummy is that from the perspective of Matty's physical wellbeing, Pink Jacket is right. From the perspective of emotional wellbeing...Jivi and Sette are the only family he's got now.

Agreed. Especially because in my head it feels like there wouldn't be a similar alienage of Crescians in Alderode. Not that all things happen to be equal, I suppose. Maybe there are? Suppose we'll see.

That part feels fine - we don't hear about Americans seeking asylum in North Korea, yet the opposite happens.

Wetback wouldn't feel in universe given the history of the word. Perhaps "saltback" could be a riff on it for those born at sea though I'm not sure how Pink Jacket would know that (or if I'm remembering correctly).

Pink doesn't seem to realize how many people the occupants of that room have killed, most of them harder to kill than his dumb ass. Kinda waiting for Sette to mention to one of the plod people that she can ride Duane's thread into the khert or some shit. Can other people see those wings? Anyways I want necklace lady who I thought was cool and then wasn't to be stranded in the khert, I bet she'd get up to some weird shit.

A potential future slur, if fencejumper isn’t sharp enough, and if it happens to roll off the tongue: “you invasive little weed.” Also, given how most of Cresce’s neighbors are some kind of —shane, that would be a strong basis for a generalized outside slur, e.g: “you sneaky little shane” and can add bite like “you little SHANIAN fence-jumper.”

Yes, I thought the exact same thing. Theoretically, that sounds like a decent option for Matty and from the perspective of the Authorities of course Jivi and Sette can't be his guardians, but in reality, it's horrible for him to be torn away from them like that. :-(

It doesn't make sense for Sette to go for a kill here, but also there's no way any convincing can be done... Just breaking out kinda works, but requires a longer term plan. I wonder what she'll do.
